L&D Photography?

Is anyone planning on getting a professional photographer for labor and delivery?  I'd love to hear about how you're capturing the moment!

As much as I've said I don't want an "audience" in the delivery room, I'd love to have a way to preserve all the memories. So I'm kind of torn about the idea and would like to hear what you all are planning.

Re: L&D Photography?

  • I was thinking about it. Still haven't decided but I think it will be nice to do at least once. I L&D photos I have seen have been well done

  • I love this idea and wish I was partaking.  Even though I tend to ugly cry so bad whenever something concerning the kids is involved, I would love to have something to look back on.  The only thing holding me back is that I didn't do it with DD and it feels "unfair" in my ridiculous, pregnant mind.
  • I like the idea of it as I've seen so many beautiful pics. I'm just not in the position to be spending any money on extras like that, especially in my pricey area! plus i'm swollen as a blimp so not sure I want my face documented hahaha

The bolded part is exactly how I feel. For DD we took a handful of cell phone pictures once she was born.. On the scale etc. So I feel somehow that it is unfair to have professional birth photos of baby #2.
  • DH has said he's wearing the GoPro on his head during L&D...haha nope.

But in all seriousness, while I've seen some beautiful pictures I don't think it's something that I want to do for myself, but it is a cool thing.

  • I like the idea of it but I agree with the "swollen as a blimp-don't really want my picture taken" and the "I didn't do it with my first" so kinda strange to have nice pics with my second. AND the justify the money part. I'd rather have professional newborn photos of just babe as a memory ((also better for sharing with others-framed grandparent gifts, birth announcement, wall decor at home, etc.

Cuz, Maybe those who've done the birth photography before can clue me in, What do you do with the photos other than have them in a little album hidden somewhere? I personally wouldn't want pics of the experience shared with anyone or hanging on my walls as I entertain.
  • Yeah I guess I really like the idea of having one or two great delivery pics just for us to have. But I'm not going to put them on next year's Christmas card.

I'm OK with doing something "special" for this one that I didn't do for my other two, bc I'm projecting that #3 will miss out on a lot of stuff just bc it's the third.

Above all though I just don't know who I'd be comfortable having in the room...

I'd say any profession birth photographer you don't know. They'll know the drill, how to be out of the way, and not make it awkward. **some dulas will do both too** but id rather have another stranger than someone I know.
  • Oh and she will be doing them again for our March baby!!
  • @heether3456 those are gorgeous!
  • @Cbeanz thanks! She took over 200 pictures. She captured so many moments I wouldn't of thought of taking and it was nice that I didn't have to worry about not getting a picture of something or my hubby not getting a picture. She didn't take any pictures I was uncomfortable with. We talked about no below the waist pictures. I just love all the emotion in the picture. Especially my husbands expressions when he was born ❤️
  • Those were beautiful!

  • I would LOVE to do this. I just can't justify the cost, and also I would absolutely hate if I ended up completely disappointed by the pictures that were taken. I tend to have high standards when it comes to hiring photographers lol.

  • I don't think the audience aspect would make a difference. A birth photographer will stay out of the way and be really unobtrusive. :)

If love to but i just can't justify the cost since I'm taking 5 months unpaid after the birth.

  • @heether3456 those pictures are so tasteful and beautiful! I have no interest in having a photographer in the room, but I can see why people would like those pictures.

A friend of a friend posted her L&D photos on Facebook... and I was super uncomfortable looking at them when they popped up on my newsfeed. They were way too personal IMO for her to be posting for everyone to see... like way too close to showing the cha-cha (unlike the ones posted above!)

  • I'm a photographer, so we'll have our camera there and take pictures as we can. I did the same with DD, my husband and a couple of our friends took pictures, and a nurse grabbed a few in the OR since I ended up with a c-section. It'll be different this time with a scheduled section, but hopefully we can still get some good pics of the process!

  • @triwellnessgirl I'm so glad you got them for yourself!  It's amazing to look back on them!
  • Anyone know a ballpark of the cost?  I know there's a range but are we talking like, wedding photo pricing or what?

The couple of people I've looked at seem to be 300-500 dollars for the sessions, not including digital prints or anything.

My ballpark was around 1k. I live in LA so everything is more expensive here.

we are paying $750 and it includes photos at home before we head to L&D, the labor & birth, and 1 hr after birth. I will get all the photos on a drive as well as 25 edited images.

i live in so cal, so everything is more $ here. I shopped around... lots of photographers price $1500-$2000 for L&D photos. Our photographer happens to be our Doula's backup also, so she recommended her. That helped with $.
