1 Year Check-Up

We just had our 1 year check-up today. Everything is great with DD. But if you haven't had your appointment yet,  I wanted to warn you that it's a rough one. We had 4 shots and some blood drawn from a finger prick.
I've never liked watching her gets shots, but this is the first time I've cried. It was awful.

Re: 1 Year Check-Up

  • Oh man In dreading it!! How has it been post-needles? Any fevers or anything? Your poor girl!!
  • You only had 4 shots! I'm jealous! We had 5 and the finger prick. It was rough... we has a minor fever and slept hard that night. Next day LO was back to normal.
  • Loading the player...
  • We had three shots and that was bad enough!!! We still have to go to the lab for the blood draw. We had a finger prick at her 9 month but this time I guess they need more for the lead test. I'm dreading it! As for a reaction LO has a minor rash and was off for a day or so afterwards.
  • We had 5 shots to. no finger prick or blood drawn, so thats a good thing! My little guy was funny he cried during the shots and was fine after i picked him up but he gave the nurse the meanest look and fake cried everytime she looked at him. We got some bad new this appontment though, His pediatrician was worried about his weight gain. He only gained 7oz since 9 month check up so we are stuffing him every 2hrs to see if he can gain some weight. We are still dealing with tear duct problems to so we have been sent to a specialist. Not a fun appointment for us =/
  • Brynlee had her appointment today. 3 shots, and I'm sure you could have heard her a mile away. But she's actually been in a great mood all day! I'm really surprised. She doesn't seem sore, no fever, nothing.
  • We had just 2 shots at the 1 yr appointment (but they combined vaccines in them so 2 shots = 5 diseases), the doc also said typically 5 shots are needed at 12 months but its too much to give at once so they do a follow up in a few months.  Baby cried at the shots but calmed fairly quickly in my arms and no reactions after.  No blood was drawn.  What were the blood tests for?  And those who had more than 2 shots do you then not need follow ups before 18 months?
  • We had 2 shots (MMR and prevnar), with a toe prick on Friday and it was rough. LO was fine that afternoon but then her appetite tanked during dinner and she threw up a bunch that night before bed with a teeny low fever. She was SUPER crazy cranky all day Saturday and most of Sunday and had runny nose (probably a cold though, not shot related). I don't know if it was shots or her 3 teeth that are coming together, but it was not a pleasant time :( Poor girl.
@kodariah we had little weight gain as well and her percentiles have dropped on weight/height over her past 3 visits at 6, 9, and 1 year. Doctor didn't seem concerned but said we may need to revisit at her 15 month visit. I can't get LO to eat more so I don't know how that's supposed to happen!
  • We had 4 shots, but with 2 nurses, so they did two at a time to get them done faster. This was the unhappiest she's been post-shot. (She didn't even cry after the flu shot.) We had missed nap yesterday afternoon, so after the shot hysteria, we're doing the blood draw another day. (The lab is right around the corner for us.) No complications after, though, and is cheerful as ever now that some sleep has gone down.
  • @juliaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa we were told the blood draw was to test for lead and anemia.  We live in a house that was built in the 1800s and has painted trim and I'm super paranoid about lead!  We're doing our blood draw tomorrow. I'm already thinking I'm going to be traumatized by it.

We do have to go back at 15 months so that must be why we only had three
  • 4 shots here too, no pricks thankfully. The nurse said those 4 shots are especially painful - she screamed and got her first lollipop afterwards :) A little less growth since she was riddled with sickness in December (back to back) but to be expected.
  • For those who have had their year appointments, did your doctors say anything about giving milk now and how much?

Mine said we should do the gradual change over by mixing in more and more whole milk until we totally switch over. At our appointment we were already doing 50/50 formula and milk and the Dr said within the next week we were okay to be on 100% milk. We made the switch and her tummy tolerated it just fine so we're sticking with it!

We are totally on whole milk now. She gets about 6oz 3x a day. She also thankfully tolerated it well. She gets a drop of a multi vitamin liquid in 1 of those bottles a day.

I think I need to decrease her amounts to 3x6oz bottles. Right now she has three 8oz bottles and I feel she isnt eating as much solids because of it. Thanks!
  • Our pedi said to start giving whole milk right away and that baby should have 500 ml a day.  I told the ped I doubted she would drink that much as she never nursed for too long, the pediatrician didn't seem concerned and didn't have a minimum or average I should aim for.  I switched pretty much cold turkey from nursing to whole milk right after the appointment.  Seems to be going ok and Baby seems to take in about 300 ml a day.
  • THAT. WAS. AWFUL.

@cali1710 my pediatrician said around 16oz a day!

Oh no! LO didnt take it well?! Poor thing
  • @cali1710 one figer prick and two shots... it wouldnt have been as bad if the appointment didn't start 30 minutes after he was supposed to be taking his second nap which obviously didn't happen! Lol

Oh man. I never knew there were finger pricks until this thread!! I just know there are three shots!
  • @kaym6 you're in Canada yes?
  • @cali1710 no I am in the US! I didn't know either! It was to test for lead and anemia. I'm glad I read this thread before I went lol
  • Regarding blood draw/finger prick: We were told if you live in a house that was built more than 50 years ago, it is standard procedure to test for lead levels.
  • Ours was yesterday, it was awful. Apparently LO had some adhesions where he was circumsised so the Pedi basically pulled them apart :frowning: and I could tell it hurt him so much, I couldn't even watch. LO was so upset and then we still had to do 3 shots! Afterwards we let LO walk around in the grassy area outside since it made him feel better-no pants, no shoes, band-aids on his legs but we had no shame at that point lol
  • That was terrible! So thankful it's over with!!!
