contractions at 23 weeks because of dehydration

Hi ladies. I just wanted to share my story about the importance of hydrating. Yesterday, I went for a run and slipped on a patch of ice. My knee and hands took most of the impact, but my belly hit the ground too. I called my OB and she had me come in for an US and monitoring. The baby is fine, thank God. However, they also monitored my uterus and unbeknownst to me, I was having small contractions when I came in. So, they made me drink a lot of water and the contractions went away after about an hour. My nurse explained that dehydration can cause contractions which is why it's so important to stay hydrated. I felt really dumb, because I am usually so on top of drinking water. But, for some reason, yesterday I didn't have much. I just wanted to share my story, because while I know it's important to drink a lot of water, I had no idea that not drinking enough can cause contractions.

  • Thanks for sharing, @chocolatelemons, and I'm glad you and baby are doing well! I usually do great at drinking water when I'm at work because I keep a 32 oz nalgene on my desk, but I'm terrible at it on the weekends. I'm gonna go fill up a nalgene now.

  • Thanks for sharing!  glad you and baby are alright! I've been horrible with my water intake, so thank you for the heads up. I'll be trying harder to get my water in now!
  • Lurking from June - I had something similar happen with my first pregnancy at roughly the same point (20 something weeks). Had a bunch of abdominal discomfort that drinking water wasn't resolving, so went to L&D to be checked out. They were surprised to find that I was having legit contractions (not BH); a liter of fluids later, they had resolved. Went on to have a full-term baby, so no harm done!
    Hope you're feeling better, @chocolatelemons

  • Thanks for the reminder!  I'm super bad at hydrating!  I'm so glad you and baby are ok!
  • Thank you for the reminder! I was getting light headed, high bpm, and feeling faint a few weeks ago, my Dr said I need to be snacking often and drinking 100-120 oz of water a day! Been following the advice and it hasn't happened as much. Keep drinking your water ladies :)
  • Thanks for the reminder! I'm doing awful with this... I teach in a high school, special education, I find it very difficult to get to the bathroom, causing me to drink less water... I need to come up with a new plan. Lately I've been having lots of cramping in my legs.
  • Yes they say when we get to the end if you think it's labor or can't tell if it bh to drink lots of water and lay down if they stop it's not labor
  • @Yiggle09 That's really good to know.

Thanks for the well wishes to everyone else. Keep drinking that water!
  • Thanks for letting us know. I had never heard that. I do really well at work, but I don't keep up as well on the weekends. Getting a glass now!
