1st Trimester

When did you tell people at work?

I just found out I'm pregnant (at around 4 weeks) and I'm getting fairly nauseous at work, so I'm thinking about telling the few people in my dept because it?s going to start affecting my work. My boss (who is out on maternity leave right now) told us early on but now I can?t remember how many weeks along she was. Maybe 6?

Anyway, when did you start telling people?

Re: When did you tell people at work?

  • I told at about 8 1/2 weeks, but I didn't really have m/s yet (just started this week) and I was out on Christmas vacay for 2 weeks. ?I'd tell your supervisor first (either the one on mat lv or whoever you're reporting to now), and then take it a little more slowly with coworkers unless there's a good reason for them to know.

  • i told my boss at around 6 weeks because i had had some spotting and was having a lot of labd and u/s appts during the work day. i haven't yet told any coworkers - prob will in about 2 weeks or so.

  • I just told on Friday (at 12 weeks). I wouldn't tell until after the ultrasound and hearing the heartbeat because in case something happened, I didn't want to have to untell people I wasn't close to. If you're not feeling well, you don't have to tell them why, you can just say you haven't been feeling well lately and leave it at that. It's none of their business until you decide it is.

  • I'm waiting as long as I can hide it. call me crazy, but if i can get to 5-6mos. wearing baggy clothes, all the better.  I want to wait until after my annual review. I don't trust the workplace to be fair (legal or not).

  • We told people at about 12 weeks. We wanted to wait until after we had had at least one doctor's appointment, and of course we wanted to wait until we told our families (which we did at 10w).

  • Sorry, I have more to add. If you're feeling sick or think you'll have to miss work for dr. appointments, I don't think there's any harm in telling someone. I came close to telling my boss earlier, but ended up not having to.

  • i told mine last monday- working on my 10th week- and i primarily told her because i would  have to miss more days of work for NTscan and OB appt that were separate dates- she knew to keep it hush hush when i said that i was still early- i am gonna wait to tell others around the office (if i even decide to tell everyone)- until my 2nd tri starts (in another 3 weeks)- i will prob leak it to one friend here and she has a big mouth so it will def get around!
  • I haven't yet but plan A is to tell them when I'm past the first tri.  Plan B is to tell them when I'm forced to after I have to throw up in my wastebasket.

  • I told my boss around 6 weeks because of the time I'd be missing from work.

Like a PP said, I'd like to hide it as long as I can. Unfortunately, my husband works with the husbands of a couple CW's - they're all part of The Boys Club at work. A CW is having her baby shower on the 24th, so I'll announce the following week - around 12 1/2 wks.

  • My boss knew I was doing IVF so she knew right away.  I also told a few close friends at work - people who had also done IVF.  It was nice having their support.  I requested maternity leave info from HR last week and told my staff on Friday (so 7 1/5 weeks).  I started telling other people today.  I figured at this point if anything happened I would need some time off.
  •

As long as I don't have noticable m/s, then I plan to tell my boss after my first doctor's appointment (at 12 weeks).

  • We haven't told anyone yet. We're planning to wait until after the 1st tri. Maybe you could try some home remedies for the m/s first... I'm taking 50 mg of B6 and it seems to be doing the trick. I've also read ginger ale and jolly ranchers can help.

  • Well I wasn't planning on telling anyone until 12 weeks but several people have already inquired so I have told a few.  My bump has been pretty obvious since coming back from Christmas break and a teacher just told me today that her student asked if I am going to have a baby!  So, I think people have their suspicions.  Still, I am waiting to officially let them know (and my students and families) until 12-13 weeks.
  • I would really caution you against telling at 4 weeks.  The chance of miscarriage is incredibly high early in pregnancy, and anyone you tell, you'd have to tell about a miscarriage.

I waited until 12 weeks.  Some people tell earlier.  I might have been okay with telling after I saw the heartbeat (around 8 weeks) because the chance of miscarriage goes down then.

  • I told my boss on Monday but it was for safety reasons, I work at a special needs school (high risk students and padded timeout rooms).

Just felt like someone should know if I go running out of a classroom!
