High-Risk Pregnancy

Sex with placenta previa

Ok ladies let me just start off by saying keep the scolding and "you're so selfish" comments to yourself. This is my first pregnancy so I'm still learning so much.

Ok so, at 9 weeks I was diagnosed with complete placenta previa (at the ER because i had some very severe nausea) so of course I was put on pelvic rest. So being terrified by that I played it very safe, no sex, no heavy lifting, took a little time off work even, at least until my next appointment. So when I went in for my next appointment I was about 12 weeks and of course I was asked if I've had any bleeding and I was very confused by this question because I'm like why would I be bleeding? But Dr. told me to take it easy and rest as much as i can so i thought that was the green light and the pelvic rest was over. So on occasion my boyfriend and i would be intimate, not too often though, and afterwards everything would be fine, no bleeding, cramping, or anything. So when I had my second sonogram at 16 weeks my placenta had moved up a little to where it was partial previa. Still asked if I had any bleeding or anything, still nothing. Still advised me to take it easy. So long story short, this whole time I THOUGHT I was in the clear, I really wasn't and the few times my boyfriend and i were intimate was actually very very dangerous. Luckily, I haven't had ANY issues whatsoever. So I guess I said all that to ask this, has anyone else have gone or is going through this now?

Re: Sex with placenta previa

  • Just to reassure you - I was diagnosed with complete Placenta Previa at 20 weeks (it has since resolved and now is low lying - I'm at 33 weeks now) and was put on pelvic rest.  My Dr. said quite a few times that although I was on pelvic rest - and that meant no sex/penetration - that wasnt necessarily because it was dangerous but that it could cause spotting (spotting after sex during pregnancy is suuuper common) and if I had any spotting I would have to be admitted for observation in the hospital.

It seems more like they are cautious and advise against sex because if you do spot they can't tell if the spotting came from sex or from previa and they will treat it like previa just to be sure - which means a hospital stay.  So if you didnt any have spotting you are probably fine and I wouldn't worry about it.

BTW I did ask the Dr. if other types of sex were ok - specifically orgasm w/o penetration and she said its fine.  Also, its super common to have previa early in pregnancy and if yours has moved already you should be in the clear soon.

  • Thanks so much for the reassurance! And yes as of now I no longer have placenta previa but it is still low lying. However, me and my boyfriend haven't had any type of intercourse for quite some time but I'm still on pelvic and bed rest because I unexpectedly started spotting off and on at 24 weeks, and yes a hospital stay was inevitable
