Is anyone else having a planned c-section?

Yes I know I'm still in my first tri but I know I am going to have a c-section. I have talked with my doctor and feel it is the best decision for me. The question of what type of birth I will be having has come up in normal pregnancy chit chat, usually with a complete stranger. When I say c-section I usually hear horror stories, random statistics, and get a bunch of why questions along with a lot of critisism. Suddenly strangers turn into medical experts. I was just wondering if anyone else will be having a planned c-section and has gotten comments like this.

If you've spoken with your doctor and you agree on the reasoning, etc., then why does it matter what others do? I feel like you're inviting controversy by even asking this question.

I am having one, but have not told anyone yet about it. So no comments. Although that doesn't stop people from telling me horror stories. I'm not worried. It is better for the baby if I do, and I couldn't live with myself if something happened to it if I went ahead with a reg vag delivery.

I am having a planned c-section because I had one with my daughter and there were complications with my uterus hardening and I don't even want to mess with the mess that can bring. I have gotten some comments, but I just ignore them. If it is what is best then thats how it needs to be. I now there are complications that can occur in a regular birth as well so I think people just don't need to add anything especially if they themselves have never experienced it.

I knew in my 1st Tri that I had to have a planned C/S as well. Not because of the twins, but because I have detached both retinas multiple times that my OB and Retina specialist are worried that the pressure from pushing will cause me to detach again-meaning I will need emergency eye surgery. I had the option for using forceps or a vacuum to extract the babies and I have my own beliefs as to why those weren't the best options for me.

I've gotten a lot of slack from people (like you, they tend to be totally random) when they ask. Which first of all, why are you asking that to begin with but anyways...no one is going to make me feel guilty or uneducated about my decision. I'd rather be able to (literally) see my babies when I deliver than be rushed to the OR for eye surgery.

I agree, if you and your Dr. feel it is the best option for you then why go on about it.

I hope I never have to have one, as I feel vaginal delivery is an amazing experience and I wouldn't want to be 'robbed' of that...IMO and in my own personal experiences. If you have a healthy baby and a healthy mommy, isn't that what matters, not so much if it baby was delivered by section or vaginally!

I think alot of women get crap about planned c-sections because of their reasoning for getting one. Many women are misinformed and/or uneducated about the procedure. Caeserean deliveries are only supposed to happen if it's medically necessary. If a woman is planning on a Caeserean for any other reason, then she gets criticism for it. Or a stern finger-wagging, depending on how she explains herself.

I have previously had back surgery and may not be able to go through a regular delivery - however - i am not planning the c-section ahead of time. If i go into labor and really can't do it, then they'll do the section. What are your reasons for planning it ahead? Are you unable to give birth vaginally or just scared/don't want to?

May I ask why you think it's better to have surgery than a vaginal birth? I guess I have a hard time understanding how you've come to this decision so early?

I'm having a planned C-section partly by choice and partly due to my Interstitial Cystitis (bladder disease and pelvic floor dysfunction). Doc said it was really up to me because both can affect my condition. To me, it was the better choice, so we went agreed upon the planned c-section. Don't let anyone try to lecture you either. Everyone will have their opinion, but you gotta do what feels right for you.

I am planning a c-section because my incision was too thin from my DD, my uterus might rupture if I try to deliver vaginally. I have not really gotten any comments about it. I am wondering why your doctor might think this is best for you? Is the baby in a strange positon?

I have had a LEEP recently, and I also have Interstitial Cystitis (as PP mentioned), both of these making me a candidate for C-section.

Despite these issues, I have elected to plan on a vaginal delivery! A C-section is major abdominal surgery. Major! I would never schedule an elective C-section unless there is no other option.

Now, if you and your doctor agree that a C-section is the best option for you, don't worry about what anyone else says. If I were you, I would probably seek a second opinion (VBAC is much more common & doable nowadays), but that's just me.

I've found that no matter what you do in pregnancy, someone is going to criticize it

Wow, I'm pretty shocked to see two others on here with IC! Just out of curiosity, were either of you on meds or painkillers before you got pregnant? How did getting off these meds (if you did) affect your pregnancy? Are you in pain? I'd love to hear more about this! I was on morphine for about a year and a half and quit when I found out I was pregnant, and it's not been terribly fun. Maternal Fetal Medicine is actually trying to figure out if I should go back on a low dose of pills until my 3rd tri. Just thought I'd see how you guys are doing.

I'm all for the vag natural so I've got a different persepctive, just make sure you've done the research--your comment about a c-section being better for the baby is not accurate. ?Labor actually helps the baby purge the amniotic fluid from its lungs (among many other physical and emotional benefits) and a c-section has nott been shown to be better for mother or baby unless there's a medically indicated reason for performing the major abdominal surgery. ?If you still plan on the procedure, find out what kind of uterine closure your doc does (single or double--it matters for future pregnancies) and discuss risks of multiple c-sections if you plan on having more than one baby. ? ?

I am having a scheduled c-section due to fibroids. I've found that many people feel comfortable saying completely inappropriate things while you're pregnant. I would ignore the comments. Wink

I was on Vikoden and Elmiron before I got pregnant but I wasn't on Elmiron long enough for it to work very well. I went off of both when I found out I was pregnant. My Dr said that some women with IC have no simptoms during pregnancy. I havn't been that lucky but I do feel a lot better than I did before I got pregnant. I have had a few really bad flair ups though. The heating pad is my best friend. I have spent a lot of nights using it while my window was slightly open so I didn't get to hot.

Are occasional injections of morphine an option for you? I was told that if I really needed it I could have one as long as I was past my first tri. I have been doing ok so far but is nice to know that I have another option if the pain gets really bad.

I will be having a planned, repeat c-section. I'm not at all concerned about my decision - I know and trust my doctor, I've done my research, I believe this is best for me. I don't really give people a chance to question it. If it comes up, I usually say "I will be having a repeat c/s, so...." and I keep talking. It's never questioned.

I have found that everyone has an opinion about what pregnant women should and shouldn't do! I am personally planning to have a non-medicated birth and I get flack for that so I say you just can't win. If you've talked with your doctor and you both are in agreement about a planned c-section, then do it and pooh on anyone else that has issues with it.....it isn't their body!

I'm having another c-section. The reason being is because I had cryosurgery and have scar tissue.
