Flu shot?

my OB recommended the flu shot so I got one today.  My OB didn't have any so I got the regular one from my regular dr (and yes, they knew I was pregnant).  I didn't ask if it was thimerisol free and didn't worry about it at first since my OB said any flu shot other than the mist should be safe.  But...I have anxiety.  Which causes me to stress and worry about everything. So I am totally second-guessing my decision and wondering if I should have waited. Anyone else have this shot during the first tri in this pregnancy or a previous one?  I just need some reassurance that I made the right decision. (Trust me--I am absolutely not anti-vaccines in the least--just kind of kicking myself for not getting this done before I got pregnant).

Re: Flu shot?

  • I've gotten the flu shot with both pregnancies and in the first tri. It's highly recommended and I've had no complications.

  • I got mine before I got pregnant, but with my son, I went to CVS. They knew I was pregnant. I always get mine.
  • Thank you both!

  • I got mine 2 days before my bfp, so I was pregnant but didn't know it yet. Last pregnancy I got it around 24 weeks or so. Either way I would want it. The flu is no joke!

  • *lurking from May '17* There isn't an "OB" flu vaccine and a "regular people" flu vaccine. As long a stay you're under the age of 65, they're all the same. Flu mist isn't recommended this year because the efficacy wasn't as good as the shot last year. Thimerisol isn't used in the flu shot. Please please please get vaccinated against influenza. A sore arm is worth avoiding serious illness.

  • With my first pregnancy, I had the flu shot at 4 weeks and 35 weeks. Baby was fine.
  • I got my shot before finding out I was pregnant. But last week I got the stomach flu (shot only covers the respiratory flu)
Worst week of my whole life and I cannot imagine having any respiratory flu ...glad I got it
  • Thank you all!  Your responses have calmed my anxiety a bit.  I definitely know that I don't want the flu.  I tend to overthink and always worry about the risks of any decision I make--more than I should. Thanks again for being positive and reassuring!

If it makes you feel better, I just emailed my doc when I saw your question (I haven't gotten my Flu shot and I'm 6w3d) and she told me to go get it done.
  • I got mine also like two days before finding out I was pregnant back in November and I've felt fine so far. I got it while pregnant with my son also.
  • My dr said if I didn't get the flu shot and I got the flu I would probably end up in the ICU because I have asthma....so I got the shot and this time I didn't react as much as I normally do. Normally I get body aches and low grade fevers and a headache for a few days this time it was just that day.
  • No flu shot here.. it only covers certain strains. And everyone I know who got the flu this season already had the shot too.. so go figure!

  • I'll be asking for mine at my OB appointment next week. I get a flu shot every year, whether I am pregnant or not (as advised by my OB & GP).

The flu shot you got at the GP's should be the exact same vaccine you would have received at your OB's. No reason to be worried!
  • I got one in third tri with DS, but it was that late bc he was due N15.  Definitely worth it,especially since you pass on some of the immunity to the baby later on.

  • My OB recommended it, but said it's entirely up to me whether or not to get it. I never get it anyway and still won't.
