Pre-Natal Yoga

Did / are any of you ladies doing pre-natal yoga? If you did for a previous pregnancy, did you feel it helped you with an easier labor? Did you do yoga before and was there much of a difference between the classes? I am debating joining a class. It's been a while since I did yoga, but I do want to find something to keep me active during this pregnancy. I have gone a few times to a regular yoga studio with a friend, and I am torn as to whether the pre-natal class is going to be a better choice or not.

Re: Pre-Natal Yoga

  • I did prenatal yoga with DS. I didn't find it was a workout per se, but I enjoyed it. It was good for stretching areas that were sore and generally relaxing. It was also nice to connect with other moms-to-be. I'm not sure if it helped with labour that much but we did do some breathing exercises that were useful.

This to a tee. I'm planning on doing it this time too for the stretching aspect and to connect with other moms...

  • I practiced yoga both before my pregnancy and during my pregnancy with DS. Because my yoga teacher also was a labor and delivery nurse, we focused on breathing and also developing endurance. She definitely did not take it easy om us pregnant moms. That class was actually more difficult than classes I have taken since. I can say without a doubt that it helped with my labor, particularly in creating a focused mindset.
  • I practice hot power and vinyasa yoga quite regularly. I tried prenatal yoga with DS and nearly fell asleep (slight exaggeration, but close). I crave the workout in a yoga studio. It keeps me fit, balanced, and refreshed. Prenatal yoga did none of that for me.
  • I've never done prenatal yoga but I did take a birth class where they practiced breathing. If you don't get a chance to take the yoga class (which I'm considering doing myself!) I def. suggest taking a class or something that helps with the breathing.
  • I'm hoping to try some form of yoga regularly during this pregnancy.  Last pregnancy my body really responded to the relaxin hormone and I threw my back completely out 5 times!  I'm hoping yoga will help ease that a bit!  I'm also going to try acupuncture at my doctor's approval.

  • @Texafornian I know, right?!  It was AWFUL!  I have back issues to begin with, so I don't think it was completely the Relaxin hormone.

  • @sableeg how'd your feet fair with the relaxin? Did your size go up or did they snap back?

@Texafornian For a little while my feet got wider, but in the year and a half since I think they have gone back to normal.  They might still be a little wider than pre-pregnancy.

  • Thanks for the info ladies!
  • I did prenatal with my first but only because I was not active during that pregnancy.  It was more relaxing than anything and it was nice but I am now doing Iyengar  yoga one to two times a week since this is what I have been practicing in the last year.  I would say if you have never done yoga to stick with prenatal as you don't want to start any new activities while pregnant.
  • may be a silly question, but do you HAVE to switch to prenatal yoga when pregnant? Or is it only in the later trimesters? I was getting into yoga before I got pregnant and would like to continue (especially since I have been told to ease up on crossfit for a little bit), but not sure if I need to switch classes right away.
  • I hope that once 1st tri ends that I'll be able to do some kind of activity. Prenatal yoga sounds fun. Right now it's hard for me to get the energy to walk from my house to my car first thing in the morning lol.
  • @eahayes You don't have to switch, but you should let your yoga instructor know you are expecting because you aren't supposed to do certain poses while pregnant. They can give you modified poses to do for any non-PG approved positions.
  • @JNR6510 thanks! I'll tell the teacher next time I take a class :)
  • If you were new to yoga did you wait till 2nd trimester to start?

I've been practicing yoga for years and I love it. If you're used to yoga I think the prenatal classes are too slow paced and a bit boring but if its new to you I'd imagine its a great starting point.

  • I generally do a low impact, relaxed kind of yoga called "stretch and restore." I will be around 9 weeks the next time I go. Should I tell the instructor?
  • margareth Other than my husband and my sister, the only person that knows I'm pregnant is my personal trainer. I just didn't want to risk doing something detrimental during a workout that could have been prevented. Chances are the low impact yoga class is perfectly fine during pregnancy, but the instructor is a professional and will tell you if some poses need to be modified.

  • @eahayes I also do Cross Fit!  My midwife said there are no restrictions unless I feel uncomfortable expecially in the first trimester.  The only thing I changed was no more box jumps.  I switched to step ups because I feel more comfortable in case I lose my balance.  Also, if you start a yoga class make sure it is a reputable place that can accommodate pregnant women.  Most say they can but there are many restrictions as far as poses go depending on what trimester you are in.  I do Iyengar yoga and my teacher even has a maternity book to make sure what I can and can not do.
  • For all you yogis out there I am finding that I am holding my head balance so much longer since being pregnant!  I would of thought it would of been the opposite but I get so comfortable!
