Feeling confused after first Dr. Appt.

I had a pregnancy confirmation appointment today with my GYN and it was very anticlimactic. I could hardly sleep last night in anticipation of possibly getting to see my little Appleseed today! According to my LMP, I'll be 6 weeks tomorrow. So today, I went to my appointment and didn't see my regular doctor but saw another one who doesn't do OB anymore. Her attitude was very cold and to the point - almost like she was reading off a script. She did an ultra sound and all we were able to see was the yolk sac and gestational sac. She asked if I wanted to do a blood test but I declined since I have an appt with my OB on Feb. 1st and I'd rather just start fresh with her.

Has anyone else experienced a not so enthusiastic doctors appt? My head is spinning right now. It's hard getting that BFP and still having to question everything. How is everyone getting through these first couple of weeks awaiting a solid confirmation? I'm staying as positive as possible but would love to hear some tips!

Re: Feeling confused after first Dr. Appt.

  • I never had a bad experience at my obgyn with my first baby (who is almost two); except with the receptionist ladies who were just cold and stand off ish. I'm sorry to say I can't really relate, but this time around, I'm feeling like I can't wait 6 weeks for my official confirmation!! However, my advice (to myself as well) is to just focus on the joy of the beautiful miracle growing inside you! Don't let anyone or any bad circumstance steal that from you! Take care of yourself mentally physically and emotionally because your baby is perfect. Everything will be just fine!

  • I second @hlu21. Stay positive and let your faith be bigger than your fears! I too have had a bad experience with an OB years ago. It was my first pregnancy and I was so excited! The first thing the doctor said to me was "Don't be surprised if you miscarry." ....Who says that?! Needless to say I never went back to her. These weeks feel like they're creeping by. Just stay positive and focus on that little blessing! :-)

  • Echoing PP...stay positive!  My guess is that doc doesn't do OB anymore because s/he's burned out.  They see a billion pregnancies, so sometimes I think they forget that it is an exciting and wonderful moment for you!  I'm sorry you had to experience that.

I've had a bad experience with my OB too.  I switched to the doctor who delivered my first *TW* who was stillborn *TW* and she didn't remember me.  I had felt a profound connection to her because she was there for me during the most difficult part of my life, and then she didn't remember me!  I still think she's an amazing doctor so I'm staying with her, and I'm just trying to remember that she sees a lot of us, but we only see one (or a couple) of them!

  • @sableeg omg I wonder how she felt after the fact...once reminded. Again, so sorry that you went through that...
    glad you're here now!

I echo the others...I'm sure they see a million patients and sometimes it can be a blur. Hopefully the experiences hence forth with your actual doctor are more positive.

  • That stinks.. I'm sorry! I can't say I've ever been there... I love my OB, the other Drs I've seen there, and all the staff. (Enough to make an hour+ Drive worth it)

I would start making a list of questions before the next appointment so that you don't forget anything and at least don't leave feeling disappointed again.

  • @LaceyC1020  OMG, what a terrible thing to say! (TW) After I did miscarry, my Dr told me it is very common and that people don't realize how often it really happens, but I can't imagine someone bringing that up when it isn't even relevant. That's awful!

  • I try to remember that doctors are humans too and sometimes suffer from "foot in mouth" disease!

  • That sounds terrible, but as someone in healthcare I would say it sounds more like they just had bad bedside manner, and less like they were trying to foreshadow something negative.  Good vibes your way!
