Managing digital pics

I have thousands of pictures and videos of LO on my phone and camera now. I just got an external hard drive for storing them, because they're taking up all the memory on my devices. Hopefully this will also keep them from getting lost. We're working on a pregnancy/birth album and a first-year album right now, but it's really daunting to sort through all these pictures.

How do you guys do it?

Re: Managing digital pics

  • We have a shared iPhone photo stream with our parents. That way everything is on the cloud and can be shared with ease with our families. Working well so far. I need to print some to make photo collages of her first year to decorate our house - after two years here, we still have no personal photos up at all!
  • Loading the player...
  • My husband and I use a shared photo steam on iPhone to add photos for one another so we're not messaging them all day long.

I dump my photos onto my mac and that's where they stay.

I want to create a first year book, just never seem to have time. If I keep waiting, it'll never get done and he will be 5 the next time I turn around.

What are you using to make the book? Shutterfly?
  • @robinj716: Yes, I'm using Shutterfly. Back in the day I'd make and print the whole thing myself with InDesign, which I used to work with professionally. Now I am not in the habit of using that anymore and Shutterfly is just easier. In my opinion, a lot of their templates are a bit too busy, so I'll probably use one of the simple ones and adapt it to my taste. The important thing is that we have a physical album we can browse and enjoy!
  • I am working on my little guys photo book the same way I did for my first son, every 8 weeks I have uploaded all my photos and edited my favourites using Lightroom. I also do a little write up on everything that has changed/new things he does/how much he has grown. Then after his birthday I will make a book using photobookcanada.com, I really like the quality of their books, and they constantly have sales!

Just for the future, it's so much fun making a photo book every year, I have made one for my 6 year old every year. After the first year it's just photos with no weekly write ups, but I write him a letter and put it at the front of every book! My son loves to take them out and look at them with me
  • I agree. Since we never print photos anymore to sit down and look through, I at least want a book to view photos one day.
  • I back everything up to google photos (which was once picassa). It's been great and when I watch the iPhone Live Photos on the app, I've discovered some really cute clips (it turns them into videos). We got the grandparents Nixplay frames last year for Christmas so we could send pictures daily once Ellie was born--the wifi ones are a little pricey (they do go on sale) but it's so fun to see the photos and watch her grow in the slideshow!
