Ways to fib about not drinking?

I am a big wine drinker and am already dreading dinner plans, etc. because it will be really obvious if I'm not drinking. Any suggestions for good fake excuses for not drinking when you don't want people to know you're pregnant?

  • Ahh, yes... .the "wine issue", lol. I actually only took a pregnancy test to feel safe to drink the bottle of wine I had just bought, and then received another bottle as a Christmas gift... so I know the struggle!
I feigned a headache because 1. I'm prone to them, so no one questions it and 2. Wine is known to give some people headaches anyway.

  • Tell them you're on antibiotics and can't drink alcohol while on them. That's the excuse I planned to use before I ended up blabbing the secret to everyone anyway because I suck at holding that kind of thing in lol
  • Haha!  Oh, yes.  I went through this during all holiday parties and am still struggling to avoid suspicion.  I am not a heavy drinker, but definitely consistent (always down for a glass or two)!

My husband and I would have the same drink and I would pretend to drink and while others weren't looking we would switch glasses and he was drinking for two.
When DH wasn't around I had to pretend drink and then take the drink to the bathroom and dump some out.
I also had "strep throat" for one get together, supposedly on antibiotics so no longer contagious, but not up for drinking.  I also have been "hungover" for a brunch date and not wanting a drink.

Ugh, I am so sick of lying and acting that now I have been avoiding social situations.  Inviting people over for dinner is way easier to be sneaky than going out.
  • @alyssa82511 I am the same way, can't stop blabbing the news haha!
  • I'm hosting neighborhood bunco on the 16th with some girls that I've gotten really close to. We always take Jell-O shots at bunco and I'm going to have to dodge it somehow.

  • @daniellelynette I'm so glad I'm not the only one haha. DH was wanting us keep it a secret from everyone for a while but my daughter found the positive pregnancy test and my mom straight up asked me if I was pregnant yet like the day after and I'm a terrible liar lol

  • Lurker from July 17. I had an empty prescription pill bottle. I filled it with prenatal vitamins. When I was out, I would take the bottle with me and take my vitamin in front of people so that usually mooted the questions about why I wasn't drinking.
  • Haha I don't know if this would work for all families but my doesn't pay a ton of attention so I put grape juice in a wine glass
  • One of the downfalls to pregnancy. No drinking. DH already ordered me wine of the month club prior to us finding out I was pregnant. I now have 2 bottles of wine coming to my house every month. Torture.

I always like the trying to lose weight and be healthier excuse. Its great right now too, with it being the first of the year. The Headache excuse is a good one too.

  • @alyssa82511 that's awesome! You're definitely not the only one lol DH and I had planned on surprising my parents with our announcement picture but I pulled my mom into the back bedroom while I was nursing DS and I was like I have a secret but I can't TELL you... you can guess tho.. and she was like.. well you're only taking Tylenol and your boobs are huge... you're pregnant? Haha! And then I told her it was a secret and she ran up to my sister and blabbed ha even tho my sister knew because she was the one taking the pictures for us!
  • Yeah I was thinking the antibiotics excuse could work for people we only see once in the next month or so, but otherwise I think the New Years resolution thing is probably my best bet! I could at least say I'm doing it for the month of January as a detox or something... thanks for the ideas!!

  • You could do the whole "I've made my New Years resolution not to drink anything alcoholic for 6 months" or however long you'd like to say. Or that you're doing a cleanse or something
  • New year's resolution here as excuse. Or Stomach not feeling good, as I have a crappy Stomach in general. Still though, I wonder how long I will be able to get away with it with some people. Also the thing that sucks about the new year resolution is then I can't eat lots of carbs in front of people lol.

Grape juice is a great idea! I am a wine drinker too, but I will have a beer or two every now and then. At New Years I put my DH's empty beer can in a coozie and walked around with it, that way no one would pick it up and realize it was empty. Going to do the same for Superbowl since I plan on telling everyone the week after for my 30th birthday.

I'm pretty sure this is illegal.

  • I'm going to run into this at my own party on Saturday! The plan is to arrive early and tell our server so they can bring me delicious, fruity drinks that look alcoholic, but aren't.

My daughters 2nd birthday party is next weekend. Our friends/family always have a drink or something at every party. They will know instantly if I'm not drinking. So I think I will make a pitcher of margaritas and fill my glass before anyone gets there with just the mix. I'll get a big glass so I don't have to refill it at all. Fingers crossed.

In my previous pregnancies I kept an old wine bottle and put non-alcoholic wine inside it. That fooled everyone.

    Why would that be illegal?

With DS we had a party and I just carried an empty beer can around. Would be harder with wine though! If nobody's paying close attention you can touch your lips to it and nurse it like crazy until you can dump some or something.

The illegal part is that the original prescription label is on the pill bottle. The label has to match the person in possession of the medicine and the medicine in the vial has to match the prescription. Voiding that is illegal. Taking the prescription label off and using the vial to hold anything else (non prescription) is completely fine.

  • Though this may not be true according to some local ordinances, generally the illegal part is putting prescription drugs in other containers; not reusing the container to hold other things. If the prescription was not for a controlled substance you should be fine regardless.
  • I've been using the excuse that I am preparing for a marathon. I lost a good amount of weight before TTC and have been eating healthy since. I am telling everyone I'm cutting out sugar, alcohol, etc while training. The marathon is after our "all clear" date so it works perfect

@DPandB    That does sound like torture!!! I miss my wine :(

  • If you are an occasional beer drinker.... get bottled beer in a dark bottle, dump it out in a bathroom and refill the bottle with water. I did this during my previous pregnancy to keep my nosey sister-in-law from asking why I wasn't drinking. Also, my husband and I would "drink" the same thing ... and just swap glasses every so often so it looked like the wine in mine was slowly disappearing. Also - instead of antibiotics - which is a common excuse among my friends/colleagues....I've said I hurt my back and am taking muscle relaxers....just a variant on the same lie. Antibiotics raises red flags with my social group!
  • Antibotics and muscle relaxers are all fine excuses, but if I don't want to drink I usually tell people "I just took some ibuprofen so I wanna wait a bit" and they usually forget to ask again. Hypothetical liver damage is serious stuff, y'all

  • This is something I'm especially concerned about with my family. They are big social drinkers and the first thing my dad asks when I walk into the house is Do you want a drink? One time when I was actually sick, I said no to a drink and they all started whispering that I was pregnant. Now that I am, and not ready to tell them, I've been trying to figure out how to avoid it every Sunday dinner. My husband is so clever that he said he'll just be my bartender (he usually is anyways) and will just give me a pineapple juice with cranberry and no one will no otherwise. (My usual go to is a Malibu Bay breeze). He's so clever!! So now no one in my family will second guess it!
  • I miss fancy adult beverages! I'll have to enjoy some virgin drinks for the time being lol
  • Any good virgin drinks you're ordering at restaurants?? I'm already bored of water!

  • You could say you drank too much recently, and you can't think about another drink right now.

  • I'm am big fan of getting beer in a can and just fake-drinking it or holding it...especially for at restaurants when everyone is watching you order. So many fancy beers come in cans now...
