Re: Exercise/Fitness Check-in 1/6

  • 1: How far along are you?  12 weeks & 4 days

2: How was your last week?  Pretty good. Successfully increased the amount of veggies I was / am eating.

3: What are your goals for the week ahead? Try adding different fruits and veggies to my diet / meals

4: How are you going to treat yourself this week/celebrate your body and its accomplishments? After work I may stop and get a small icecream cone or something from somewhere.

5: Rants/Raves/Questions? Nothing at the moment.

6: GTKY: What do you do that helps you make fitness a priority during pregnancy or, if you haven't been able to but want to, what do you think you can do to start making some small steps to doing so? I am trying to find ways to incorporate veggies into my meals instead of having them on the side.

1: How far along are you?  14w3d

2: How was your last week? great- 5 days so far and probably an at home workout while snowed in tomorrow. 3 lifting/cardio and 2 swimming so far this week. Average 12k steps a day. Added more veggies and fruit in too.

3: What are your goals for the week ahead?  same 5-6 days at the gym, keep plugging veggies in and get my steps in.

4: How are you going to treat yourself this week/celebrate your body and its accomplishments? I always bake when we're are in a storm can't leave so I will probably make a gluten free cake tomorrow

5: Rants/Raves/Questions? today I'm upset because our two day wedding show for our business that we paid money to be in and rented things for was cancelled due to the storm coming into the South. We also lose any potential brides to book and this is a very tight time of year and we depend on bookings from this show to get through so just a huge bummer all around. Oh and I had to take my car in because the power steering has failed and it needs a new tire and the motor on my back windshield wiper is blown so we have to pay out a ton of money too. Not our week.

6: GTKY: What do you do that helps you make fitness a priority during pregnancy or, if you haven't been able to but want to, what do you think you can do to start making some small steps to doing so? I always find time and plan ahead the day before when I will work out whether it is before work or after. I always know my schedule and when I can fit it in and make it priority to do so even before I was pregnant it it how I maintain the habit. Like tomorrow we will likely be snowed in but I will rent a fitness video to do at home to get moving. I also use a Fitbit HR and track my steps and workouts and I love getting to that goal of 5 of 5 workouts at the end of the week or more and the step goal for the day.

2: How was your last week? So much better than any week since Thanksgiving. I've done yoga three times and taken several walks. Old me would scoff at these results; pregnant me is just grateful to do anything physical. I was also able to have some sort of vegetable item in lunches and dinners almost every day, as well as some fruit. I hadn't been able to stomach much of that so I'm satisfied.

3: What are your goals for the week ahead?  Add more time to AM yoga sessions, and maybe start back with some of my light weights. In the next few weeks I'd like to get back into the gym.

4: How are you going to treat yourself this week/celebrate your body and its accomplishments? I hadn't thought about it! Next week I'm going shopping for some maternity dresses/shirts, so I guess that will be my reward.

5: Rants/Raves/Questions? Just a whine. I was such a healthy eater and exerciser pre-pregnancy. I know I'll get back there eventually, but I feel guilty now.

6: GTKY: What do you do that helps you make fitness a priority during pregnancy or, if you haven't been able to but want to, what do you think you can do to start making some small steps to doing so? Exercise and healthy eating have been a part of my life forever. My parents are healthy, my husband runs every day, my sister is training for a marathon. I know they'll influence me. Once I feel like I'm getting back to where I was, I'll be signing up for classes again, which keeps me accountable.
  • 1: How far along are you?
    11w and some days
2: How was your last week?
This past week has not been as great - I had a great mat pilates session on Saturday and walked a lot on Sunday, but since I went back to work, it's been crazy busy and I haven't even had a chance to take a walk.
3: What are your goals for the week ahead?
a few runs and hopefully another pilates session
4: How are you going to treat yourself this week/celebrate your body and its accomplishments?
To make up for not exercising, I've been sticking to my lunches and snacks so still feel relatively okay.
    5: Rants/Raves/Questions?
My headaches. ugh. I can't run in the morning because i'm scared I'll exacerbate them.
6: GTKY: What do you do that helps you make fitness a priority during pregnancy or, if you haven't been able to but want to, what do you think you can do to start making some small steps to doing so?
    Tracking everything.
  • @PurplePumpernickel you are doing great every little bit counts! The first trimester is no joke and just getting moving and doing anything is great. I was training for marathon open water swims and crossfit competitions so believe me I know it feels like a huge change and can be really frustrating, but every body's and every pregnancy is different and every day is even different in it.

  • @JAM85 Bah! That sucks that your wedding show was canceled. Definitely the worst as a freelancer. Hopefully it gets rescheduled or you get your $ back!!!

1: How far along are you?  11+1

2: How was your last week? I failed miserably. I could try and defend myself considering it was -2 when I left for work this morning, but it's excuses. Other than a few walks and one trainer ride, it's been pretty lame. I'm still eating healthy, so that helps, I guess. Oh, and DH got me a stability ball for a desk chair, so I guess I'm getting some sort of minuscule ab workout in.

3: What are your goals for the week ahead? I'm going to do some at home strength tonight, then hop on the trainer tomorrow. DH got me speed/cadence sensors for Christmas, but the speed sensor was busted and we just got the replacement. It'll be nice to actually be able to track my riding again!

4: How are you going to treat yourself this week/celebrate your body and its accomplishments? By getting it moving again! I'm also making some homemade chicken wonton soup tomorrow - I'm pretty excited!

5: Rants/Raves/Questions? It's freezing here. And getting dark. I can't wait for spring/summer. But, it's Friday! And DH is working late so I can watch whatever I want and snuggle the pup while I crochet like the 80 year old I secretly am :)

6: GTKY: What do you do that helps you make fitness a priority during pregnancy or, if you haven't been able to but want to, what do you think you can do to start making some small steps to doing so? Honestly, my bike trainer and dog have been the biggest help. Having a "safe" place to ride indoors has really helped with this stupid first tri fear that I'm going to mess something up. Our dog has been my reason to get out of the house for at least a short walk, even when I have to put on five layers to do so!

2: How was your last week? last week I was still feeling tired and still having a hard time sleeping and getting comfortable at night, lot of aches. This week I feel much better. I've started working out again and I feel like it's helped immediately. The stretching I've been doing has helped relieve my aches, and jumping back into my walk/jog interval workout on the treadmill has helped boost my energy level and helped me fall asleep from physical exhaustion.

3: What are your goals for the week ahead?  To keep up my treadmill workouts and stretching... really want to add in some yoga practice too, but haven't had the chance yet. I know I'll feel really good with some yoga, I always do. So far I'm doing my treadmill workout every other day with a day off in between to rest, my hips get sore. I'm also trying not to over do it. I want to stay consistent, which is my biggest obstacle when it comes to working out (pregnant or not) but when I do I see results and feel great.

4: How are you going to treat yourself this week/celebrate your body and its accomplishments? I really need a new pair of trainers so I'll probably treat myself soon. And since I can't every buy just one pair of shoes I'll probably also get a new pair of Sketcher Go-Walks (slip on's) because I live in those!

5: Rants/Raves/Questions? I'm looking for a good "house schedule" to try... what I mean is, I want to create a schedule for chores and food prep to keep on the fridge (in view) that will help keep me on track. I want to start now so that I can just add Baby info to my system when Baby gets here (i.e. feedings, changes, appointments, etc.). Does anyone have something like this that they use for their home/schedule? Would you mind sharing or is there a website that has resources or templates I can use?

6: GTKY: What do you do that helps you make fitness a priority during pregnancy or, if you haven't been able to but want to, what do you think you can do to start making some small steps to doing so? I write down my workouts. I should also write down my food too, but I don't. Right now I'm cleaning out my kitchen and fridge, stocking up on fresh groceries and trying to prepare my own meals. My husband loves to order out for convenience but I always feel better and more in control when I prepare my own food, or at least stock up on healthy prepared options from Trader Joe's and Sprouts.

2: How was your last week? It was okay. I got 3 runs in so I'll take it.

3: What are your goals for the week ahead?  Have another at least 3 run week.

4: How are you going to treat yourself this week/celebrate your body and its accomplishments? I'm going to go pickup my massage gift card from Massage Envy and go ahead and schedule the pedicure.

5: Rants/Raves/Questions? I'm so ready to be out of first tri and get my energy back. I'm so tired of being tired and sick.

6: GTKY: What do you do that helps you make fitness a priority during pregnancy or, if you haven't been able to but want to, what do you think you can do to start making some small steps to doing so? I set reminders on my calendar. I feel bad if I miss a workout if my phone reminds me. I also have a Fitbit and I track my steps and exercise days. It helps me realize how lazy/productive I'm being.
  • @Sassenach1743 Re: writing down your workouts and food - have you ever tried MyFitnessPal? DH and I both used it for a solid year when we were first working on getting back into shape, and it was an awesome way to see what I was burning vs what I was putting in my body. You can even enter recipes and look up store bought stuff, like Trader Joe's prepared stuff. I don't work for the app or anything, I just know it was super helpful for me!

@Sassenach1743 - I was going to recommend that app too. I used it before I got my BFP and I loved it.

2: How was your last week? Shameful. I went to the trainer once...and she actually had to yell at me via text just to guilt me into going...she was right. And I barely changed my eating habits.

3: What are your goals for the week ahead?  Go to the trainer twice and eat better food. I'd love to actually cook something again, but my stomach hasn't been on board with that lately...hoping for changes as the 2nd trimester approaches.

4: How are you going to treat yourself this week/celebrate your body and its accomplishments? Lol, treating it is all I've been doing...now I need to kick my own ass.

5: Rants/Raves/Questions? I love/hate my trainer. As I said before, she saw I wasn't there Tues, and called me out on it to get me there Thurs.

6: GTKY: What do you do that helps you make fitness a priority during pregnancy or, if you haven't been able to but want to, what do you think you can do to start making some small steps to doing so? My PITA trainer. And putting it on the calendar.
  • It's my first week here, hi! I'm mad awkward in print so on with it...

1: How far along are you?
    11 and change

2: How was your last week?
Finally starting to have a modicum of energy. Did exactly half of my prenatal yoga workout and made it to the rock climbing gym yesterday.

3: What are your goals for the week ahead?
Incorporate stretching sessions on days I feel too icky/lazy to do more

4: How are you going to treat yourself this week/celebrate your body and its accomplishments?
I dance in front on the mirror thinking super sexy body positive fertile goddess thoughts

    5: Rants/Raves/Questions?
Can you guys breathe?! Even brushing my teeth makes me short of breath. Exercising while I could still hold a conversation is basically taking the stairs at work

6: GTKY: What do you do that helps you make fitness a priority during pregnancy or, if you haven't been able to but want to, what do you think you can do to start making some small steps to doing so?

i have a very physical job. The idea of being out of shape *and* 8 months pregnant is very motivating
  • @RunRestRepeat Love Myfitnesspal. Have used it on and off for over a decade now no joke. I do IIFYM when no pregnant to maintain or cut and it's great has a great database which is the biggest plus and also the recipe feature

  • @pinkflamingo209 omg, I love this! I may try sexy goddess mirror dancing next time I need a boost!

@JAM85 Isn't it great? I'll admit I haven't used it as much now that healthy eating and exercise is just a part of our routine, but it was SO helpful in getting me going. Plus, the carbs/fat/protein breakdown was huge in terms of finding balance.

2: How was your last week?
Really bad. I could make excuses for not working out but I won't.  I had been doing really well working out at home or the gym 3-4 times per week with a mix of strength and cardio. I had the flu last week and I kind of fell off the wagon.

3: What are your goals for the week ahead?
My goals for the week are to workout at least 3-4 days either running or strength training. I would also like to incorporate more veggies into my diet. I have been a pretty healthy eater the last few years and have worked out a lot so my goal is to get back on the wagon and stay focused.

4: How are you going to treat yourself this week/celebrate your body and its accomplishments?

I'm getting to the point where I will likely need maternity clothes in the next month or so and would like to purchase some new items.

    5: Rants/Raves/Questions?
Really I'm just whining here, but I feel exhausted all of the time. Even though I feel better and more energized I have a hard time getting my workouts in when I get home in the evening. Does anyone have a strategy that has helped them incorporate early morning workouts?

6: GTKY: What do you do that helps you make fitness a priority during pregnancy or, if you haven't been able to but want to, what do you think you can do to start making some small steps to doing so?
Before I was pregnant, I worked out 4-5 times per week pretty consistently and had a healthy diet. I have maintained some of my healthy eating and workout habits. One thing I can do to help myself get on track and stay there is to recognize that it's ok for my workout to be a 30-40ish minute strength or cardio but it doesn't have to be both all of the time. I think this will help me manage my workouts a little better.
  • @slach6515 so my strategy for mornings has always been to have my bag completely packed and clothes laid out and ready to go. Then when the alarm goes off and I want to stay in bed, especially since I take unisom for m/s so feel
hubgover on the am, I remind myself that I can't workout any other time or in your case that you will feel worse in the afternoon and not want to and how good the day feels after I am done. Then it's just a routine of getting ready and getting out the door. If I can get in the clothes then we are golden. Before pregnancy 5:30 am was my main crossfit class and I swam at 5am days I didn't do that and I was doing doubles some of those so I really had time to make a good habit. That got really hard when I was pregnant especially first trimester but got easier around 11 weeks for me.
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • Thanks! I think I'll give that a try!
  • Anyone here have horrible headaches? I thought I was managing them well and keeping them at bay with lot s of water and magnesium and b6 supplements but the last three days have been really tough and today's the worst. I was planning on going to Pilates but the thought of getting the blood circulating and being active with this headache was too much.
    We skip these days, right?

@satsumasandlemons  If I have a normal headache, not a migraine which I do get, I go and try to at least do some non impact cardio. You may find the concentrating and listening in Pilates too much with a headache but some cardio you can zone out during especially if you set it to intervals I have found can help my headache a lot. But if you're having migraines or really debilitating headaches I'd talk to your OB and just make sure everything is ok.
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • @satsumasandlemons I've been getting them, too.  Every day.  I have only taken Tylenol.  I've actually find it helpful if I take the Tylenol right before working out...it seems to work a lot faster that way.  Blood flowing faster, maybe?

1: How far along are you?  15 weeks

2: How was your last week?
Pretty good I've been active and eating decent. When I've eaten out I've made some good choices as well. Except for the cheeseburger that I had to have.

Also I've been having a lot of pain in my groin muscles and down the insides of my legs. The ob told me something about how it's all lose and there's nothing I can do. So I'm now trying to stay away from activities that stretch to much so less yoga

3: What are your goals for the week ahead?
My goals are to find some new activities that aren't so stressful for my leg muscles. I still have not gotten back to Zumba so I'm going to try to get to a Zumba class this week.
4: How are you going to treat yourself this week/celebrate your body and its accomplishments?
We have a date night this weekend so I'm going to have a soda with caffeine and stay awake later than usual.
    5: Rants/Raves/Questions?

6: GTKY: What do you do that helps you make fitness a priority during pregnancy or, if you haven't been able to but want to, what do you think you can do to start making some small steps to doing so?
Fitness became a priority bc they have free childcare and I can't stand being cooped in the house with toddler tantrums. Without childcare I don't think I would be active at all.

@pinkflamingo209 I LOVE you dance idea, so awesome! But yes I'm still out of breath all the time.
  • 1: How far along are you?  12 weeks 2 days

2: How was your last week?
not great. Skipped the weekend run.  But ran three miles today without stopping. It's slow going building my cardio stamina back up but it's nice to make progress.

3: What are your goals for the week ahead?
Two more runs before the weekend is over. Resuming adult swim lessons on Saturday to get more confidence in the water (living in Hawaii and being afraid of the ocean do not mix)

4: How are you going to treat yourself this week/celebrate your body and its accomplishments?
Foam roll to prevent injury. Generally resting until my next run.

    5: Rants/Raves/Questions?
i can't find my yoga mat so had to order a new one. I hope to join prenatal yoga soon!

6: GTKY: What do you do that helps you make fitness a priority during pregnancy or, if you haven't been able to but want to, what do you think you can do to start making some small steps to doing so?
Exercise helps so much with my fatigue and state of mind. It's like a cloud lifts after I run. But I have to really will myself to go when I'm so tired after work. I really wish I was a morning person and could knock out the run in the early am.
  • I'm being a rebel and not using the template. I just want to announce to the world that I finally went on a walk/jog and it felt SO good. I used to run almost daily but these last few months have kicked my butt. I only went around 2.25 miles but I don't care. It was nice to just be off my butt and moving.
  • Hi!

I haven't been active on any of the exercise fitness boards posts yet :)  Honestly

1: How far along are you?  14 weeks 2 days!

2: How was your last week?
So last week, I started eating more normal food.  Then, one day I didn't make it to dinner on time and ended up with not a great dinner and some morning sickness.  This week, so far so good!   Real food, lots of snacks, and lots of eating good things. I'm slowly expanding and had turkey this week in chili---seriously a big evolution.

3: What are your goals for the week ahead?
I want some advice!    Eating healthier and more is working.   I've been tired and trying to enforce a strict bed time for me :).  I was taking a running class when I got pregnant. It was slow with a goal of a 5k. I live in the DC so we get some ice and cold....I wondered if you guys are doing prenatal totally?  aka I should go to a prenatal class or if like a more normal, even running or whatever is working. I might try running at a gym, so its inside--I've been not wanting to get sick.

4: How are you going to treat yourself this week/celebrate your body and its accomplishments?
Auntie Anne's pretzels as a snack! Oh yeah-- microwave make at home so healthier!

    5: Rants/Raves/Questions?
I'd love to know like I said in number 3 more if you guys have advice on introducing exercise back or what you're doing.

6: GTKY: What do you do that helps you make fitness a priority during pregnancy or, if you haven't been able to but want to, what do you think you can do to start making some small steps to doing so?
I work from home, so I also want to make getting out and downtown a priority.  I loved one fitness site I stumbled on for pregnant and moms....fit4mom and thought it might be helpful to have a thing I could do during maternity leave too.
  • @Katie______ so you do t have to necessarily limit yourself to something that says prenatal. I lift (a decent amount of weigh) and do cardio for an hour 3x a week and swim 2 miles total in an hour 2x a week then do a road bike trainer another day if I can. Now I was doing all of this although more before I got pregnant so the deal is as long as you were doing it prior to pregnancy you should be able to ease back in even with the break. The key is to listen to your body, watch your breathing you should be able to hold a semi decent conversation I.e. Not be breathless and nothing should feel like it is hurting or straining. Start small and work in more as you feel like it! Even brisk walking counts!

@ginger1228 yay!!! Congrats glad you felt well enough to start easing back in

    BabyFruit Ticker
  • Thanks @JAM85
I was learning to run a 5k so sometimes I felt a little like a panting dog after running, but I appreciate and insights and the I can do both!!!  Thanks!  You sound very fit!
  • @Katie______ I used to live in DC.  It is still, by far, my favorite running city.  So many options and great running trails.

When I was younger and much fitter, I trained for a marathon over the winter.  I felt like the biggest badass when i was running by myself in the snow on the Georgetown trail, music thumping with no one for miles.  However, I also knew that if i tripped and sprained my ankle, no one would find me until the spring thaw.  So I agree that staying inside is probably for the best during your pregnancy.

Definitely do not feel like you have to stick to things specifically labelled "prenatal."  I'm mostly just running too.  I do yoga breathing while running (deep inhale through the nose, exhale through my mouth) to make sure I'm not overdoing it.  If I can't maintain that breathing, then I slow down or take a walking break until I can.  I'm planning to go to prenatal yoga to work on breathing, muscle toning and meet other moms.

Swimming is actually one of the best exercises you can do while pregnant.  Is there a pool near you?

  • @Twinkiedoll I don't know of a pool---but I have one for the summer. I need to research just like a basic gym shorter term----good idea on the slipping.  Can I ask--is there a certain time aka x far along you plan to try the prenatal classes?  I feel almost not big enough or am not sure yet.
  • @Katie______I plan on going as soon as my yoga mat arrives.  Amazon is taking its sweet time shipping to me.

The one by me is drop in, and the only class that fits my schedule is on Saturday afternoons.  So I plan on just stopping by and see if I like it.  I haven't done yoga in years, and even then I was still a beginner.  So part of my motivation for going early is that I want to learn how to do things properly while I'm still generally comfortable and not enormous.  I read that prenatal yoga strengthens the muscles for back and hip support when you're bigger and also for childbirth, so I feel like going earlier to start that muscle development is probably good.
  • Thanks @Twinkiedoll
That's exactly why I liked the idea of the prenatal yoga and this one other class :):)---just to get muscles for childbirth.
  • Gosh, I'm so impressed by the runners. I ran off and on pre-pregnancy (did lots of other workouts as well) and now walking makes me winded. I never thought I'd miss running, but my early morning runs along the beach, watching the sunrise last winter, were just the best.
