Soft Marker for Downs

Hi everyone. I hope there are some of you out there who can relate to this as I am looking for someone to talk to...

I had a scan at 18 weeks, 5 days at a High Risk center due to a leep procedure I had in 2008. The scan was going well until they told me about a bright white dot on the baby's heart. They told me it is a soft marker for Downs. They then sent me to get blood drawn to determine my risk level.

Has anyone out there experienced this? Should I be worried? She had no other markers for down and everything else was totally normal.

Re: Soft Marker for Downs

  • I haven't experienced it but I know people who have. From what I've researched it's only really a concern if other markers are also there. I know it's hard not to worry but if everything else was good there is a high probability that everything is okay

  • Thank you! There were no other markers. I need to try to relax!
  • No advice, but I can't imagine how stressful that is. FX everything else comes back clear.

I had this exact soft marker at my anatomy scan for my youngest in 2014. They sent me to the maternal fetal medicine office for a more in-depth ultrasound, and looked for additional markers. Since they didn't find any, there was no more concern.  My son was born completely healthy. My doctor had said from the beginning that there was no reason to be concerned unless there were multiple soft markers, so the follow up scan was too double-check for markers. Fingers crossed that your follow up bloodwork comes back low risk!
  • Thank you! It's so good to hear your baby was healthy! Thanks again!
  • DS2 had a a two vessel cord which is a soft marker. (He is 100% healthy.) Typically, you need more than one soft marker or a hard maker for it to cause real concern.  Try not to stress about it.  Hope everything is fine!

  • @KelleyWaynert I just had my scan done this morning and the doctor also found a marker on the heart. I have already had the blood test done and the risk level is low. Since we have the test results and they couldn't find any other markers, I was told not to worry.  They told me to think of it as a freckle. It wasn't fun news to receive but the doctors made me feel comfortable enough that it's nothing to worry about. FX that your blood work comes back low risk and can put you at ease!
