Diclegis?

Has anyone heard, tried, or asked their doctors about this yet?

I have been recommended this by several friends and I am thinking about asking my OB about it on Friday at my appointment. I am pretty weird about medications in general and will only take something if I'm desperate, even when I'm not pregnant, but I have 2 other kiddos and a husband who need me to be a functioning human, and right now I'm just not.

This is my third pregnancy and I was so excited going into this healthier and more fit than I've ever been, and wouldn't ya know, I've been sicker than a dog! Haha!

I had very little nausea with my previous 2 pregnancies, and this time I am nauseous all day long. I haven't thrown up, but I almost wish I would because the constant nausea is terrible!

Just wanted to know if this is something that has worked for you!

Re: Diclegis?

  • I've taken it with both pregnancies. It helps me tremendously. I was throwing up all day and now I just feel queasy in the mornings. I would say go for it!

  • @SweetTooth126 That's great to hear! Did it make you sleepy? That is the only side effect my friends talked about, so they suggest taking it at night. They say when you do it works for the next day.
  • I have taken it with every pregnancy. I didn't think it seemed to be as effective for me this time as I'm still vomiting a couple times a day, but when I skipped one pill one day I was sick 7 times in one evening, so maybe it is working better than I thought. I take two at night so it kicks in for the next morning, then one in the morning and one in the afternoon. I am pretty tired all the time, but first tri is generally exhausting anyway so I can't be sure to attribute that to the medication.

  • I've taken it. It didn't help tremendously with this pregnancy, so I couldn't justify the $700/25 day price. I'm taking Unisom/B6 three times a day instead and that helps just as much, if not a tad more. Might want to try the combo until Friday to get an idea.

  • My RE suggested it to me because I lost 10 lbs in two weeks just after getting pregnant.  It has been a lifesaver for me.  I am still queasy at times and still vomit occasionally, but it's not multiple times a day.  And I actually get hungry and can eat a meal!

It is very expensive.  I am lucky that my insurance covers most of it, but make sure you get the coupon from the manufacturer, because it brings the price down a ton even with insurance.

I do get a little sleepy during the day (I take two before bed and one when I wake up), but I'd much rather deal with that than throwing up!

  • It actually didn't help me at all last pregnancy, I was on zofran (which they give to chemo patients) 4 times a day and even that didn't help me! Still threw up 6 times a day and couldn't talk/open my mouth/turn my head or I would throw up again. But I had HG. This time is not as bad as last time(don't get me wrong it's still horrible! ) and I have a feeling diclegis will help me this time around. Hopefully it should help you too
  • What sex are your two previous children? I hear girls make you more nauseous, but I know that's not really true lol.

You can get the active ingredients OTC. Unisom (doxylamine succinate) and vitamin b6 (pyridoxine). I got CVS brand for both, which came with 100 tabs, so fairly inexpensive. I take 1 tab unisom (25mg) and 1 tab vitamin b6 (100mg) before bed. It lasts the whole next day. You may be drowsy at first.
  • Lifesaver. I was already tired anyway so not sure if the drowsy feeling came from pregnancy or the medicine. I'll take tired over nauseous any day.
Plus, I do drink one small cup of drip coffee a day, and that normally gives me enough energy to get through work and maybe a trip to the gym too.

For reference, with my insurance I paid $40 out of pocket.

  • I started the unisom/b6 on Friday and it's helped greatly.

  • I started it as soon as morning sickness started and within a week I felt 10x better. It needs to build the B6 up in yoru system. I was doing just 2 before bed and now that I'm feeling 80% better I just do 1 before bed to save some $$$. I think it's $40 for 60 pills. I don't plan to get more once I run out. We also tried a slow-release B6 vitamin made by GNC to try and save some money and it makes me vomit for 24 hours straight, so never again! lol

  • @Incandescent I have one of each! Lol! I was just mildly nauseous with both of them, but nothing like this!

I know my hCG seemed high, though, comparing it to others' "average" numbers around the same time period, so maybe that contributes to the nausea? I don't know. At 6w4d it was 64,811...and that seems pretty high. I didn't have those labs drawn with my last two so I can't compare.

I will definitely ask him about both the Diclegis and the B6/Unisom combo. Thanks for all the advice and opinions!

I'm so used to being super healthy and active and full of energy. Feeling so terrible has me a bit depressed. Looking for to 2nd trimester!
  • I started taking it during my first pregnancy  (boy) after Zofran and Phenergan didn't work. I still threw up some, but not nearly as bad.  My obstetrician prescribed it again this time because I've had really bad diarrhea. I don't know if being on it has helped with that, but I've only thrown up once this time.
  • It actually didn't help me at all last pregnancy, I was on zofran (which they give to chemo patients) 4 times a day and even that didn't help me! Still threw up 6 times a day and couldn't talk/open my mouth/turn my head or I would throw up again. But I had HG. Diclegis didn't help me at all my last pregnancy.  In fact, taking Diclegis and Zofran made my nausea worse.  This time around, 2 Diclegis before bed holds me over for almost 24 hours and I feel almost human.  It's weird how it works differently depending on the pregnancy.
