Questions for childcare provider

I am interviewing a mom of 2 in my neighborhood today. I am also interviewing someone else from care.com on Monday. What should I be asking them?

I am only going to need part time childcare 0-3 days a week depending on the week. I am open to have them come into my home or for me to bring my daughter to them. I believe the people I have interviews with they would watch my daughter at their home. I just have no clue what I should be asking.

Re: Questions for childcare provider

  • I'd want to know their experience, how many kids she is watching, does she follow a schedule or will she go with a feedings/sleep schedule you may have established. What are her policies for sick baby, how much notice do you have to give her each week for the days you will need her, does she have paid holidays or anything like that

  • In addition to what @kvruns mentioned I would want to know how many other kids are being watched and what their ages are as well as what developmental activities she will do with LO at this age (i.e. tummy time, reading, music) and if she uses screens of any kind during the day. Some people turn on videos and call it caretaking, which is a major turn off for me.

  • If you'll be leaving her in their home, ask if there is any circumstance in which another adult would be alone with her. The answer should be "no" but you never know! I like to know their emergency plan in case they get sick, too, because I work rather far away from my babysitter, so if she needed to leave in an emergency, I wanted to know who would watch the kids until I got there.

I don't say this to turn you off, but the first mom I used as a babysitter would take subbing jobs while she had my daughter and leave her home with her husband without telling me. I had made an allowance for him to watch her one night because she had a meeting she needed to go to, but it was for an hour or so. I was shocked and horrified that she left her all day without telling me! Of course, my daughter was fine, but what she did was very untrustworthy and I had to make the very difficult phone call to fire her. It worked out for the best though, because I have since found an incredible in home provider and she is amazing! I hope interviews go smoothly! I totally know how stressful this process is!!

  • Thanks all! My interview from Saturday had to be rescheduled. I had my first one on Monday, she seemed nice. Man I have no clue what I am doing.
