Structured activities?

good morning! Wondering what types of structured activities you do with your LO. We play with his toys, but it's all kind of free play. We'll read books throughout the day. I take him to a child sing class and parent and baby swim class and story time at the library. I just feel like the time at home is a few seconds at one toy then onto the next. And maybe that's fine, but I want to maybe play a game or something that is a little more structured or should I not expect that attention yet?

Re: Structured activities?

  • My son doesn't really have the attention span for a structured activity. He likes to just roam and play with whatever toy draws his attention (which is usually only for a few minutes at a time). He's really into exploring things and even if I try a structured activity he loses interest and goes off to look at something else. I think it's still a little early to expect them to have a good attention span.

  • This is the age for exploring. I wouldn't expect much of an attention span for games for awhile. My older daughter is just now getting really good at sitting for long games at four. She would sit for shorter games starting around 2.5 but better at 3. Everything you are doing sounds good. Especially the reading time. My little one doesn't sit much for a book but she does like to flip the pages and point to things. We go to storytime and a weekly play group at the school.
  • LO might focus on a structured sit-down activity for 5 min, but that is it. I just try to bring bits of structured interaction into his free play.

I put my daughter in a parent and tot gymnastics class and she's definitely not ready for "group" activities. While the rest of the class is standing in a circle doing exercises and playing ring-around-the-rosie, my daughter wants to be doing her own thing running around and starting to tackle the obstacle course. We spend most of our time away from her group just because she's more interested in doing her own thing at her own pace- which is still awesome because she's constantly learning! I definitely don't expect her to be interested in structured activities yet or stay in one spot for a certain duration of time (except for her car seat and crib of course)
  • My daughter also goes from toy to toy although fun recently she has started focusing on puzzles for longer periods of time and coloring.
