Baby shower long distance participation

So I'm throwing a baby shower for my friend this month and it turns out that half the guest list is not local. When I Google or check Pinterest for ways for far away friends and family to participate, what I get are ideas for a virtual shower which I do not want to do (I'm already doing all the work of a regular one). Skype is not an option at our venue and videos seem a bit cheesy for this particular mom to be.

Did anyone have friends or family who couldn't be present participate in a way they found meaningful? Any ideas?

    They could give advice or words of encouragement, a funny story about raising kids, etc. and you could read them out loud.

    Seems odd to invite a bunch of people that won't be able to come. The only non local people I had invited to my shower were close family and friends that had expressed interest in traveling for it.

    I invited a bunch of non locals to my shower when it happened. It's an easy way to let far away people know it is happening (you never know who will come) so they feel included and also a simple way to share their registry.

    Stuck in the box: My Mom invited people from all over the place to my shower. I didn't expect most to show since I live abroad but it is still a nice gesture to invite those people.
