Morning sickness or actually sick?

Future FTM here, and I decided to finally quit lurking and join the discussion boards. I have a lot to learn over the next few months, so I'm hoping some of you ladies who have been here before will share your wisdom! I'm about 9.5 weeks pregnant, and so far my only real symptoms had been exhaustion all.the.time and nausea. I never actually threw up though, until last night. I've now thrown up twice (almost 3 times, but I managed to keep it down the last time). So my question is how do you know when it's morning sickness or when you're actually sick? And how often do you typically visit the bathroom with morning sickness?

DH said I felt warm last night, but my temperature was normal this morning when we got out the thermometer. One minute I'll have the chills, and the next minute I'll be sweating. I've hardly eaten all day because I feel like I won't be able to keep it down, so now I'm starting to feel weak and even more worn out. I think I'm actually sick...but if it is just morning (aka all day) sickness, how on earth do some of you superwomen still function? I must be a big ol' baby, because I called in sick to work today and have barely moved from the couch!

Re: Morning sickness or actually sick?

  • In my experience....and I have terrible morning sickness with all my pregnancies... is that there is a distinct difference in morning sickness and a stomach bug or the flu.  you shouldn't have a fever and sweats/chills with morning sickness but feeling hot and cold is common in pregnancy as progesterone is surging.  That being said...after about the 9th week, progesterone starts to drop as the placenta takes over, so it's unlikely that you're experiencing such a surge in progesterone to have wild temperature swings.  Now, it's possible your dates are off and you may be experiencing that...but it sounds like you've caught a bug to me.    See how you feel over the next day.  I'm sorry. It sucks.  But, I'm hoping that it's just a bug and you feel back to normal soon!

I have terrible nausea,I had hg last pregnancy and I'm hoping this one won't escalate to that. I know exactly how you feel, you can't eat anything because you throw up literally everything you eat, but when you don't eat, you are weak and even more nauseous! I'm an stm and I agree,I don't know how all these superwomen do it! (I came very late to work today! ) About the chills and sweats,I always have uncontrollable chills after I vomit, so maybe that's it. I can't promise it'll go away because it didn't last pregnancy,I had the terrible nausea the whole time, but I wish you the best of luck! You are most likely not sick, pregnancy is unfortunately the cause of these annoying feelings!
  • Sounds like MS, but you never know.  When my naseau spikes I usually feel a bit warmer.  Hormones can do funny things to our bodies.  That being said, if you are concerned you could be sick go see your doctor just to be sure it's not a virus.

  • The only thing that makes me think it's not morning sickness is that you are getting the chills.   That's not a morning sickness thing, that's more of a flu-like symptom.
  • When I am nauseous and feeling like I might vomit, I get hot and sweat. So it could be related to just nausea?
  • @brookedeyo,

It hasn't been fun since I have been naseous on and off for six weeks now.  Hope you are fairing better than I am.  I am either freezing or sweating upba storm.  Gotta love hormones.

@vannilly, did you ever figure it out?  Hoping you avoided a tummy bug while pregnant.  It's not fun at any time, but I feel it is worse in pregnancy.

  • I had this question recently too. I had no other flu like symptoms but my co-workers were sick with a bug around the same time. The best way to tell is how long it lasts. Obviously a bug will go away sooner. My sickness kind of faded and I was like, okay maybe it's the flu. Then it came back and I'm like, nah just ms haha.

  • I had a massive headache with coughing, congestion, and no fever. Post nasal drip was causing most of the nausea and doc diagnosed a sinus infection. Did you have any other symptoms? MS is not always in the morning btw. You can also get motion sickness.
It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most...not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes... There's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know! *ZBB*

  • @Lauradi1010 I'm almost positive I was actually sick. I was still feeling under the weather for the next few days, but I wasn't throwing up. I think morning sickness hit me on Friday though, because I felt fine but threw up twice that morning after taking my prenatal vitamin and a banana. No chills/sweats or any other symptoms came with it...I just couldn't keep anything down that morning.
  • I hope you are doing well.
I was having hot and cold flashes a couple weeks ago. I was taking off and putting on my sweater every 15 minutes.

Ugh.  Sorry you were sick.  I hope you are feeling better.  I had a stomach bug right after getting BFP and then it made its way to almost every member of my husband's extended family.  Am terrified to get it back since I had it a bit worse than anyone else and had to call my MIL over to help my watch my son.  My tummy never fully recovered before MS reared its ugly head.   This may be the downside to being pregnant in winter.
