Potty training

Can anyone recommend a training potty? Haven't done any looking yet so not sure if they are all the same but wanted to have an idea what to look for since I want to get one soon. Also for you moms with experience when do you plan to start potty training? I read around 18-24 months.

Re: Potty training

  • We have the fisher price ducky potty and DS2 loves it.  I haven't even put him on it but we are PTing with DS1 who is 3 years and he loves the song that it plays and will run to the bathroom when his brother does so he can dance.  He tries to sit on it all the time, I might introduce it to him soon because he is showing an interest.

I'll PT DS2 when he shows signs of readiness.  Frequent dry diapers, cognitive ability to know when he needs to go potty, emotional willingness to let go of his diapers.  I dislike the age requirements because PTing is not just mental, it is also highly related to physical readiness as well and can cause complications if pushed too soon.

We waited until my 3 year old wanted to use the potty and have had zero accidents, no fights, no confusion.  It has been so easy and simple.  I've heard of other people taking 6 months to a year of accidents and other issues which I'm just not interested in dealing with.

  • If you are planning to start at 18 months, I recommend googling montessori toilet learning. I introduced a potty with DD1 when she had mastered walking, around 14 months (just put it in the bathroom, started talking about it, letting her see us use the bathroom, and having her sit on it briefly before going in the bathtub). Around 19 months old, she took off her diaper one afternoon and peed in the potty. She was in regular undies 2 weeks later at home and her preschool, we used trainers for trips for a couple months. No rewards or timers, just gave reminders before she started a new activity. Naps and night we used diapers until she was waking up dry (2y, 2.5y) then switched to undies, and have never had a night accident since (1.5y ago).

With LO, we've already started with a Beco potty (very short, great for early learners) at bathtime, and we do diaper changes in the bathroom, standing up for pee, I still lay her down for poop because of the mess. She pees in the potty most nights, but hasn't yet started signing when she needs to go (has just started patting her bum when she has gone). I treat toileting like any other skill (crawling, walking, dressing themselves) and offer opportunities for her to practice and support her. I think a bonus to starting before 2, is that they accept changes easily without a power struggle. I have 3 daycare kids in diapers right now (all 1-2yo) and do the same for them. The 2 yo is still wearing diapers, but is often dry most of the day and tells me when he needs to go ('bum now'). I use a baby bjorn potty for the daycare, still small enough for a 1yo, but fits the bigger kids too. I'd avoid anything with compartments or toy features, they're much harder to clean. I had a boon potty bench with dd1, and while great in theory, sucked to clean (Side compartments and a hinged lid).

  • Just asked our pediatrician at 15 month check up when we should start potty training. He said not until 2.
  • We started around 18 months with our older 2 because their daycare wouldn't support it beforehand and I wanted consistency.  Both kids were potty trained before 2, even overnight.  Fingers crossed this one goes well also.

We had a few different potties but I didn't like them.  Instead, we got a seat that fit in the toilet, just one more layer.  Perfect size for little bums!  That worked best for us

  • We have a baby Bjorn potty chair and I introduced it around 8 months. I've heard others talk about their LO being afraid of the potty, so I introduced it right away. No consistency yet, but I put him on it every morning while I get him dressed (other than his pants) as well as other times of the day. Daycare started introducing it as well. He goes on it occasionally and we've had one instance of him pointing to it and once on it, peed :-)

  • After talking to friends and reading a lot, I think we are going to skip the training potty and just use a real potty. We take DS in with us when we go and we have a potty song that he loves. He points to it and says a P word which I assume is his version of potty and likes us to put him on it and he laughs and dances. So I think we will just watch him and see when he puts two and two together and wants to start actually using it. Hoping consistency on our parts will help peak his interest. Really don't want two In diapers at once.  It's all trial and error with this kid. Poor guy! Lol
  • I'm not going to introduce the potty until she's 18mo-2yrs. It's just been my previous experiences that kids will potty train when they're ready. BUT I've heard girls train faster/easier & I've got my fingers crossed for that! Baby #4 is due in August, so I know there will be a little overlap, but I don't want 2 in diapers for long!
