Q for STM's - Did your feet get bigger?

So, question for all you second time mom's: Did your feet get and stay bigger as a result of your pregnancies? I'm finding that I'm having a bit of a shoe buying problem the last few weeks, and my hubs cautioned me last night that I should be careful how many shoes I buy because they might not fit me anymore as I get more pregnant and even after pregnancy. I haven't been buying stiletto pumps or anything that I could fall over in - mostly cute boots and wedges. But apparently both of his sisters went up a shoe size during/after pregnancy. Is this the norm - or is my hubs just trying to get me to stop buying shoes?

Re: Q for STM's - Did your feet get bigger?

  • My feet were wider/swollen in the third trimester, but not so much bigger that I had to buy new shoes. I just lived in flip flops and ballet flats. After delivery the swelling went away and my feet are now the same size as they've always been.

  • Yes, my foot grew half a size and stayed that way. I am still in denial - haha. I have so many shoes I can't wear them anymore! I recently went out and bought 4-5 pairs to start over again. What sucks is that I used to be a 10 and now I am a 10.5. That's a hard size to find in stores so I found that I will have to shop primarily online now
  • Some women do have permanently bigger feet after pregnancy.  For me, I had a ton of swelling so I only had like 2 pairs of shoes that would fit me in 3rd tri.  But afterwards I think only one of my feet stayed a little bit bigger, maybe half a size.  I pretty much still fitted in all of my shoes except the ones that were already a little too tight.

  • Yes! They grew an entire size. I got incredibly swollen the last trimester and the only thing that fit my feet were crocs. How flippin cute. They did eventually go back to normal after a while.

I am already starting to retain fluid in my feet and it's a bit depressing.
  • Oh boy, so it sounds like I should lay off the shoe purchases just in case. Thanks for your input, ladies!
  • Mine didn't grow at all; they would swell a little if I was on my feet for long periods of time during the third tri, but it would go right back down. My aunt's feet grew permanently though, so you never know.
  • Nope! Mine didn't change or grow at all.

  • Half a size and they stayed that way.  Goodbye beautiful shoe collection :(
  • Nope. I was lucky and they stayed the same.
  • Nope. Didnt grow or swell.
  • Funny we should have a thread on this today. I noticed yesterday that a pair of my Uggs didn't want to go on when I bundled myself up to go for a walk outside.  Yes I still wear Uggs.  It's cold here in the Pacific Northwest and lets face it, the Seattle area is not really a fashion forward area.  We dress for comfort and functionality in my opinion anyway.
  • I had my oldest in August, so my feet (mostly ankles) swelled a little but didn't grow in shoe size. With my second two, my feet didn't change sizes at all.
  • Mine did! They weren't swollen, but the ligaments really stretched out so my shoe size ended up increasing .5-1.0 in size.
  • mine did!  Prior to my first pregnancy I wore a size 8 1/2 and now I have to buy 9's.  Just an excuse to feed my shoe addiction! lol
  • Mine only grew during my first pregnancy thankfully! I went from a 8.5 to a 9... but I did of course have swelling during the third trimester that went away after birth with my other pregnancies.
  • Mine didn't grow last time, and I'm begging the universe that they won't this time! Wonder if it's as common in second+ pregnancies or if I'm safe?
  • Mine didn't, but my mom swears she went from a size 9 to a size 10 after having my younger sister!

  • Yes, went up 1/2 size.  I'm praying it doesn't happen again, I already have bigger feet for my height.

  • You're going to hate to hear this: I went from a 9.5 to an 11.
    They never went back down...
I will not buy shoes during pregnancy.

Thank goodness weather will be getting warmer when we near the end of our pregnancies and sandals will be acceptable!!!

I went up a shoe size halfway through the second trimester but then went back down a couple months after pregnancy. I retained A LOT of water and was super puffy all over.

I also went up a ring size. Not sure to what--I just stopped wearing my wedding ring once I had a scare where I didn't think it would come off. (Look up the floss trick. Painful, but it worked for me.) I couldn't fit back into it until almost a year after I gave birth. And then I still think I was a quarter size larger. I ended up not getting it resized because it's actually three rings in one and I was cheap and didn't want to pay $300 or whatever, and then have to do it again after this pregnancy in case it went up AGAIN.

  • Yep. I went from 12 to 12.5.

  • I've been worried about this... what a bummer to buy all new shoes!
  • Mine stayed the same, however I have a relatively flat foot. I've heard that the added weight can flatten your arch (so since I didn't have one it didn't change much). Not sure how much merit there is to that though haha.
  • Mine were swollen in third tri so heels were basically out if the question, but they went back to their old size afterwards thank god...I have a bit of an expensive shoe problem and I can't afford to replace them all!
  • I was a narrow 10.5 but usually 11 pre-twins, not much swelling until I was induced for 48+ hours but I did end up with narrow-to-regular width and 11 to 12 sized shoes now.  So 0.5 to 1.0 size increase...

I had so many shoes that didn't fit so now I only have a handful but I've been investing in better shoes since the twins... I'm dreading it if my feet grow again as I don't want to have to start over again.

I heard there are some exercises to help reverse some of the 'spread' by tightening those areas... no idea what it is and if the exercises work, but it was metioned recently.
  • So I guess I should return the boots I ordered from Coach, just in case. I did get them on a fantastic sale so I *could* justify keeping them even if only for a season...but it doesn't seem worth the risk. Sigh.

    Nope. No growing or swelling
  • Yes. Grew a whole size and stayed that way. I am now a 39/40 and used to be a 38. Apparently it happens to lots of women. I had an excellent excuse to buy new shoes but it was annoying not being able to wear my runners and work shoes and having to buy new ones.
  • My feet didn't actually grow, but because of relaxing ligaments, my arches collapsed, and now many of my pre baby shoes still fit, but are terribly uncomfortable.

  • Yes, ugh. Mine grew a half size and stayed that way.

A lucky friend of mine inherited all my gorgeous boots! I still can wear the smaller sandals or flats but feel like Cinderella's stepsister every time.
  • I was banking on this to be true since I was a teenager. I'm a size 5 so shoes are hard to find for me, I still fit in kids sizes. My moms grew a half size so I was really hoping. But no. Still a 5 sadly.
  • Yes, I was a 7 pre-pregnancy and am now a 7.5/8
