Laid back doctor

Has anyone seen a laid back doctor that basically says all medicines are fine and isn't too worried about much? I rotate between 3 doctors at my practice and the one tonight told me I can take anything on shelves. The paper from the office says robitussin, tylenol, and sudafed. She said cold meds are fine.
First trimester I told her that I wasn't eating much healthy and she said, as long as I don't eat a whole pizza I'm good. I'm surprised she didn't tell me to down it with a 6 pack.

Re: Laid back doctor

  • My ob for my first two pregnancies was somewhat like this. I was super paranoid, so it was a good balance for me to have someone basically telling me that everything was fine. Her guidelines were no raw meat or eggs, no alcohol, and no ibuprofen. I asked her specifically about caffeine once, and she said it was totally safe unless you drank over 5 cups a day. Her advice always seemed reasonable but liberal to me, which I was ok with. Things that are borderline, like deli meat or soft cheese,  she was fine with, but not things that are riskier. I did a lot of restricting that she said was unnecessary, but I never felt like she was totally wrong, just that she was less cautious about things that are judgement calls. Her attitude helped me be calm about a category b drug I had to be on for the first 14 weeks of my second pregnancy, which I am sure I would have freaked out about even though it is pretty safe. If you don't feel like you can trust the advice of that ob, though, I would make sure to only see the others in the group.

  • Wait we can take sudafed??? I have a cold now and was told only Tylenol and robitussin.
  • @wearmi1 we can take Sudafed. 30-60mg/ dose. I'm getting over a cold and it was a life saver!!! Only exception is if you have high blood pressure.

It's not doing much for me sadly. I get all throat and nose congestion.  Love being sick when having a job where a blah blah blah all day long. ☹

My doc is pretty chill, though he does have a list of safe meds to take.

That said, he's delivered all of my girls and I completely trust him. I need a chill doc because I panic and rile myself up easy, he's the ying to my yang.

edit: words are hard at 6 am.
  • My OB is pretty laid back as well. Definitely no ibuprofen - especially after 20ish weeks as it can prematurely close a valve (? I think that's what she said) in baby's heart. Other than that, she didn't seem concerned about much in regards to diet and medication.
  • Mine is super laid back as well. Sushi? Yes. Deli meat? Yes. Basically do whatever I want in moderation? Yes. Glass of wine? Yes. He did say to avoid ibuprofen and sudafed... but all of my asthma and allergy meds were good with him.
I used to work in the ER and see the VERY strong medications that I would still administer to pregnant patients, so it makes me more comfortable with the whole thing. Think of all of the women with chronic illnesses that are pregnant on all kinds of meds and have healthy babies....puts it into perspective. It also makes me really pay attention when he does tell me something to avoid! I love having a laid back OB.
  • Lurking from August17. Just went to the OB yesterday. Here is the list I was given. *TW I'm bleeding a fair amount and was told to take Motrin instead of Tylenol today to decrease cramping and clotting. */TW  I also saw the GP right after the OB since I have a sinus infection, so I'm taking Mucinex and Augmentin.

  • When I told my midwife the only thing I could keep down was Ramen noodles, I expected to be scolded. Instead she told me my body probably needed something in there, hence the craving, and suggested a healthier alternative for later.

  • Be careful with Sudafed.  The type on the shelves is phenylephrine (don't do it), but the type behind the counter is pseudafedrine (ok if your OB is cool with it).

Read specific drug names; don't just go by brand.

Yes, I was told to be sure to get the kind behind the counter, and not until second tri.

  • @NYTino24 that's extremely odd to me, you're bleeding and they want you to take a blood thinner?
  • @kenaiialise Yeah, that's why I didn't take it. I guess it could break up the clotting and since they didn't know why it was happening, they probably didn't think it would make things worse? I spoke to the Perinatologist nurse later and she said not to do anything until they see me next week for more bloodwork and another ultrasound. She said they wouldn't prescribe baby aspirin or Lovenox if I was currently bleeding... as we all see, sometimes different offices give information that is conflicting. When in doubt, I leave it out.
