White Coat Syndrome

Anyone else suffer from white coat syndrome? How are you dealing with it during pregnancy?

I've had white coat syndrome pretty much my entire life, but not officially diagnosed till I was 12. I've had 2 prenatal appointments already and the ultrasound tech and nurse could tell right away with how freaked out I was already. I'm scared of how bad it will get when I actually go into labor.

Re: White Coat Syndrome

  • I do not have white coat syndrome, but have been struggling with heightened anxiety ever since I found out I was pregnant.  I am constantly worrying about the baby.  I know it isn't the same, and I don't really have any words of wisdom or advice, but I just wanted to say I am sorry you are having to deal with that.

  • My college roommate had it and turned as white as a ghost when she had get blood drawn after she was taken by ambulance to the hospital for kidney stones. She also had major issues in delivery and her heart stopped. I don't know if the two were related, but her second c-section was better. I would let them know ahead of time and see what advice they have. Good luck!
It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most...not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes... There's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know! *ZBB*

  • When i was pregnant with my son, every single doctors appointment my blood pressure would go up when I got into the office. I don't know if its fear of doctors or just anxious about the baby! It would always go down after a while when I calmed down
  • I have the issue too. I have never officially gone an been diagnosed. When I even make an appointment I start freaking out. I had a m/c last year and that was awful because I had to go to the doctor every week for over a month and get blood drawn every time. That was soooo difficult for me every time but I will say eventually it was less scary and became routine. So hopefully this one will stick and I can pull from the idea of repetitiveness to help curve my fears. I'll be honest this time I have been thinking more about seeing the ultrasound than anything else so I am not terribly nervous yet. Also one other thing that is helpful is my doc is very straight and up front with and does not act odd she's just kinda like pull your self together it's not a big deal. That helps me a ton!
  • Yes I also get this at baby appts. I get myself anxious because I want everything to be fine and normal. My Bp is usually high when they check right away. But if they check it after a bit into the appt it's normal. Just gotta try to calm yourself.
  • Thankfully no one has freaked out about my blood pressure yet - they're just like yep you do have white coat. I'm thinking it might help me in the fact that my practice only has 2 doctors, so hopefully getting to know just 2 doctors will help. Also my one doctor my husband graduated high school with and he trusts this guy so that eases my nerves a little.

  • If you know it's high when you go in ask them to take it at the end :)

  • What I'd worry about with this is elevated BP.  So just ask the nurse if you can have a glass of water and sit for a few mins before you have your BP taken. Or, if it's high at first, repeat it at the end of the appt.  anxiety is typically higher at the beginning of the appt.
