Baby Registry!

Has anyone started their registries yet? We just started ours and being a FTM I feel so completely clueless! Wondering what I actually really need, what is nice to have, and what I really don't need at all!

Where is everyone registering and why? I decided to do Amazon (because of the convenience and free shipping) and Babies R Us (to give people a store to shop in if they choose and because I love their furniture selections). I prefer Buy Buy Baby but we don't have one conveniently located to us and those are not as common as BRU anyway.

Last question... does anyone know of a good resource to find out what the must have items are and what you don't really need?

Re: Baby Registry!

  • Lucieslist.com is awesome for a breakdown of what you need and what the best options are.

This is my second so I'm not doing a real registry...just an amazon one that is private so I can get the completion discount to use myself.  But I only need a few things since they're both girls and no new clothes are necessary.  DD is only 18 months old so all of her stuff is still pretty new and up to date.
  • Loading the player...
  • I would also search for one of our older posts in here
we had a LENGTHY discussion from our STM+ about items they swore by and which ones they would skip

I loved my Amazon registry because I could add items from sites outside Amazon as well!

  • I'm a FTM too.  My husband and I went to a BRU together to pick out big stuff (mostly furniture) and started a registry there.  Once we moved beyond those items though, I felt a little overwhelmed.  I tried to use the list that BRU gave us, but I still felt a kind of lost. We did our best with it.  A friend of my mom recently looked at my registry and said that I was supposedly missing a lot.  I know some stuff is missing because we're also doing a Target or Amazon registry (haven't really settled yet) but I'm trying to figure out how we're supposedly missing so much as to be concerning to her.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing what other moms here are doing or have done and are willing to share.
  • With DD we mostly registered at Buy Buy Baby and had a secondary lists at Target and Amazon. However, we have two BBB stores in our area. We chose ours based on personal preference, convenience for family/friends and easy returns on unused items.

BBB and Target were used most. Our older relatives/friends wanted to shop in store and our younger relatives/friends were procrastinators and went the day before/day off so free shipping wasn't as convenient.

For registering and and baby items in general the book Baby Bargains was really helpful.

My work throws "surprise" showers for all expecting employees in our department and a friend offered to throw a sprinkle/shower. Not sure if we will do one (I'm neutral on showers after the first). If we did I'd probably just go with Target fwiw.
  • I think originally we did Target and Amazon because both offered completion bonuses.

The cool thing about Amazon's registry is that you can add items from other stores.  So if you like something from Buy Buy Baby, just go there and add it to your Amazon registry.  (You'll need the Amazon widget on your browser to be able to do that).  Or I think you can add it manually with a link from your registry.

  • I did an Amazon and Target.

Unfortunately, as a FTM and given that all babies are different, I'd register for more than you need. I can tell you my kids did and didn't like, but your kid could totally hate everything my kids loved. For example, some parents swear by rock n plays, my kids hated it. Some kids hate bouncers, my kids loved it. Each of my kids preferred a different brand of bottles and pacifiers.

I second searching for the STM advice thread on things we loved or hated.
  • I originally did Amazon, target and babies r us. Then I consolidated to just target and babies r us except for an amazing rocker/recliner on Amazon! So excited! I still have to go walk around BRU to look at everything in person. I nanny so I'm very familiar with all the stuff I (think) I need!

  • I was gifted something like this portable change pad from a mama friend, and have literally used it daily for the past 19 months. I always give it as a gift now, too. Even if your diaper bag has a change pad, this is better because you can take a diaper, wipes, and the pad to the bathroom without having to lug the whole diaper bag. Can't recommend it enough!
(The link isn't the specific brand/model I have, but I think most any will do, if they have pockets for diapers and wipes. Mine also has a zipper area for diaper cream, hand sanitizer, etc.)

  • @wifeinraleigh28 and @MrsW524, I tagged you both in baby gear actually used thread.
  • I am a STM so I did an amazon registry which is really a list for me to shop from. It's mainly just things that need refreshing (wipes, new towels, pacifiers, etc) and then a new car seat and stroller. I made one for Babies R Us as well, because my mom gave me a $100 gift card for Christmas and I want to use that with a completion discount.

  • @Stankonia2014  Thanks! Looking at it, I remember that thread now.  Sorry it just completely fell out of my head, so when I saw this one I didn't even think to go looking for it.

No worries.  It was buried anyway.
  • Didn't have a registry with my first and having my second I have pretty much everything I "need" already so not doing one this time either. I'd say keep it simple and spend more on the few things you really want./need. They don't need much at all especially in the first year.

Thanks for all the tips ladies! I had absolutely no idea I could add anything to an Amazon registry... that is awesome!

I do not have a single baby item in my house at all, so I know I need to register for quite a bit. When it comes to swings, bouncers, and rock n plays, do I really need to register for all 3? Or should I pick one??

@Stankonia2014 thanks for the tag in the other thread... definitely forgot about it!

  • @wifeinraleigh28- We started with the snugapuppy bouncer and used that to move the baby room to room with us (like when you're showering or eating), and then realized we needed something for her to nap in and bought a swing (or you could probably buy a Rock n Play, she wasn't a good crib/bassinet napper). Some people also use the Rock n Play instead of a bassinet in the master bedroom, but we wanted her sleeping overnight on a flat surface so we bought a bassinet. Hope this helps. Every baby is different so maybe start with 1 or 2 and see what happens.

@wifeinraleigh28 many will use at least one of the options and if you have a multi-level home you may opt for 2.  I think Lucie's List (mentioned earlier) is going to be the biggest help because it goes over the pros and cons of the different styles.  We started with a swing and had a bassinet in our room.  Then the baby came and screamed bloody murder when placed in the swing - I could have tossed it from the roof!  The magical swing that made every baby in the world sleep was a torture device for my reflux (multiple food allergies it turns out), fussy, high needs baby that had to be held upright 24-7.  The only place we could put him where he was only mildly uncomfortable was a Baby Bjorn bouncer so I could take a shower.  It doesn't bounce unless you move it with your hand or once baby is active, through his movement.  No batteries needed or plugs, no harmful plastics, natural fabric etc. I just checked and it is $100 off on Amazon!!!!
