NBR- What are you baking/making for the holidays?

My first attempt at thread starting...be gentle.

I thought this could be the place to share recipes or craft ideas.

I bake gingerbread and sugar cookies and decorate them every year. I use the same recipe out of an ancient cookbook my mom and grandma used. I'm happy to share if anyone is interested. I make buttercream icing and buy various decor every year and make a day or two out of it with family or friends, then deliver our newly created works of art, or eat them. This weekend, I'm either making festive M&M cookies or Christmas tree cupcakes to bring to a Christmas party. This Christmas, we aren't traveling and it will be just us and a close friend, so we are foregoing the big Christmas feast and having fondue instead.

  • I'm not a big baker or crafter. But I saw this recipe the other day and BEGGED DH to make some for me. It looks so good!

  • Chocolate orange gingerbread cookies, vanilla bean sugar cookies with royal icing, and coconut lime snowball cookies. We're also making nuts and bolts.
  • This is great!  The kitchen is DH's domain so since we married (5 years ago), I've become less and less comfortable with any cooking or baking because I just never have to do it.  I used to bake a lot.  I know I'll make an apple pie for my whole family the day after Christmas. But I'd like to make a ton of cookies and treats too.  My mom doesn't bake at all (everyone else is from out of town), so I think it would be a nice treat for everyone. I'll be lurking for ideas!

Does anyone have a really good sugar cookie recipe?  I feel like they are often too crunchy and not soft and chewy.

Also, I'm hosting my book club this Wednesday.  It usually starts in the afternoon after people get done with work (we're all teachers) so I won't serve dinner, but heavy munchies.  Ideas that I could prep beforehand?  I'm seriously so bad at this.  I was thinking like a spinach-artichoke dip would be yummy...other ideas/recipes?

    Those flavors sound amazing!!
  • @cafedisco this is my tried and true sugar cookie recipe. They don't take very long to bake, as short as 5 minutes. I use an oven thermometer to make sure of the temp so they don't get too crispy. Rolling them about 1/4 inch thickness keeps them soft too, and making an effort to avoid kneading or overworking the dough will keep them tender.
  • Here's my gingerbread recipe too
  • @mallyandryan, have you tried making the toffee crack with saltines instead of Graham crackers? Holy moly, addictive and amazing sweet/salty combo!

  • @mallyandryan Thanks for sharing the toffee recipe. I made it today (yum!) and will be bringing It to work to share tomorrow. I love the sweet/salty combo so I opted to use salted butter as well as oven roasted almonds with sea salt.
  • We kept it simple this year. We made sugar and chocolate chip cookies with my mom last night. Tonight, I will be making no-bakes, and then I am done!
  • Pre-Christmas prep started in earnest this weekend. So far I've made two loaves of apple cinnamon streusel bread, two huge batches of soup (leek and potato and creamy roasted garlic and chicken), and a big batch of salsa. Back to the grocery store today to get the rest  of what I need to make cookies tonight and tomorrow. Might make an apple spice cake, too, if I have the time as I still have a bunch of apples I need to use up.

  • everything, everyone has listed sounds sooo yummy!  Unfortunately, I don't bake so I won't be making anything.   :s
  • Cooking/baking is my "thing" so this is always a fun time of year for me. I just started my holiday baking yesterday. So far I've made Chex Mix and toffee. I am debating making a Sicilian Fig cookie. I do want to make Dorie's Jammers and World Peace Cookies along with gingerbread and caramels. Last year I went completely crazy but I just haven't had energy this year. Looking at that post reminds me to add either cinnamon rolls or this Babka to the list along with (cooked and booze free--boo!!) eggnog!

  • My mom and I had a baking marathon this past weekend...we made chocolate chip cookies, italian ricotta christmas cookies, cutout sugar cookies with royal icing, and shortbread cookies. And I found these adorable little cookie tins at hobby lobby to give them out as gifts. We were planning on making spritz cookies too, but my cookie press was a total failure. Does anyone have a cookie press they would recommend?

  • I just made that graham cracker toffee recipe above but I switched out the graham crackers for saltines!  I can't wait to try them...cooling in the freezer now!

  • The original plan was to have each person (DH, DS, and myself) pick a cookie for me to make.  I usually make about 10 different types, but just didn't have the energy or time this year.  I made sugar cookies and peanut butter cup cookies so far and still need to make coconut macaroons.  Somehow we have eaten all of the sugar cookies and peanut butter cup cookies before I managed to get them in the freezer, so I might try to make a quick batch of something else just so that we have a little variety for Christmas!
  • My mom has been making a million cookies with her friends, and my daughter (Sugar, Italian, Tassies, chocolate chip, peanut butter, Thumbprints, Oatmeal) Along with Peanut butter squares, Cheesecake, fudge, brownies, and like 5 different pies..

I will be making oreo balls, stuffed bread and buffalo chicken dip- along with whatever my mom still has left to make when I get to her house on Xmas eve. (she has a big party with a giant buffet of munchies)
