I think we had talked awhile back about having a thread to share our ideas for grandparent gifts from our LOs. If you have an idea, or just want to AW the ones you ended up doing, share here!
We made salt dough and cinnamon ornaments with friends yesterday! The Santa Claus handprint is from DD1's 1st Christmas. We made 3 of DD2's Rudolph footprint yesterday(1 for me and 2 for Grandmas), the green tree has our 4 fingerprints and DD1 made lots of delicious smelling cinnamon ornaments.
So I had no time to make stuff, but we did decide to have Julia tell his parents we're expecting for Christmas. My idea is to have his sister open it with Julia so we can record their reaction.
Maybe next year I'll have my shit together enough to do something like this.... who am I kidding. Our oldest is 10 and it still hasn't happened. You ladies are rock stars! And this stuff is so flipping cute.
My original idea didn't end up working, so we did the salt dough ornaments! Just had her press her hand in, then we painted it after it had baked. I had bought plastic ornaments to get both of her hand prints on, but she kept squishing the paint all over, so I'll find a different use for those!
I'm a little bummed at how they cracked and are peeling after they baked, but oh well. It's just the handprint part that matters.
@schaze- ours cracked some too but I think 2 coats of paint hid it well. The handprint in my photo has 2 coats. The footprint only has 1 coat. I added a 2nd after I took the picture and I think it looks better now.
@LDSJM123 Haha! No kidding. I don't think I can pull it off either. I was stoked I managed to print out a picture for one of those "My 1st Christmas" frame ornaments!
Welllll. You ladies inspried me to give salt dough ornaments a try. I made the dough this morning & cut out 9 of C's handprints to turn into little Santa heads for family. I'm baking them for an hour now & will finish them off when I get home from work tonight if I have to. Tomorrow's my only day off before Christmas so it'll be off to the craft store for acrylic paint and modge podge and then home to paint and seal them all. I hope they turn out as cute as all of yours!
Edit: All finished! Man was this time consuming but I can't wait to give them out this weekend! I hope everyone loves them as much as I do! Also, I'd never used spray modge podge before and WOW does it reek! I put all of the ornaments on a cookie tray and stuck them on my screened in porch hoping that the smell will be gone if they just air out for a day. The one I'm keeping for our tree just has his name and the year on the back.
I wanted to do handmade gifts. I did for Halloween, but then poop happened and life stopped for almost 3 months. Right now I'm just happy I got Christmas decorations up and Christmas cards out (they at least have DSs photo). Next year will be very different!

I painted it with glue and sprinkled with fine glitter. Also used spray sealer afterwards!
