Low fetal heart rate

edited December 2016 in August 2017 Moms
Hi, ladies!

I haven't introduced myself, but I am Amber, and am hoping to become a second time mom. I used to be active in the August 2012 group (and can't remember my old bumpie name). My first pregnancy went smoothly, and I got pregnant the 1st month we attempted. I have had 3 losses since July 2016 in the quest to expand our family again. I was put on Progesterone, and am being treated as high risk as result of the losses. I had a ultrasound on Monday, at 5w6d, and everything looked fine, but received a call on Tuesday that the heart rate was at 80, and the doctor wants a repeat scan after Christmas because they would have liked the number to have been between 100 and 120 by that point.

Has anyone had experience with this? I will gladly accept positive or negative results! I am just looking for some data other than the percentages being thrown out by Dr Google.

Thanks in advance!
Doting wife.

  • Hi Amber.  I'm sorry for your losses and I can't imagine how stressful and worried you are.  Is 5w6d based off your LMP (last month's period)? Were you tracking ovulation/know your conception date?  If it's based off of LMP, you might not be quite as far along.  Are all the other measurements lining up with 5w6d?

Did you see a doctor after having the US on Friday?

I'm sorry, I don't have anecdotal evidence for you.

  • Hi mama,
we sound so similar. I'm also pregnant with #2, after 2 losses (since July) and 1 prior to DS.
5w6d is super early, and the baby has 1 chamber right now. It could have started beating that day. I wouldn't get caught up in the number. My dr today told me when your closer to 8 weeks that's when you get higher HR.
    Stay positive!

  • Thank you for the kind words. I was 5w6d based off of my ovulation date per my CBE monitor. The baby measured at 5w6d, too. Based off of my LMP, I would have been 6w1d at the ultrasound. My doctor reviewed the U/S findings and her office called me the next day. This U/S was for dating and viability, so I think we may be at the point where the doctor may be looking at my LMP date and using that as my due date. Either way, I am trying to be hopeful that the heart had just started beating and will improve - It's hard to remain positive with the crap year we've had, but I can only hope.

  • @Thatgirlwithglasses, i had my first US at 5w5d, and heartbeat wasn't even visible at that point.   Was just back in on Monday for a second US at 7w5d, and was able to hear the heartbeat.  Fingers crossed that you are in a similar situation...that it was just too early for something accurate.
  • I'd go off your ovulation date especially if you ovulated a little late in cycle! That is what my RE did with my last pregnancy.

  • I just had an ultrasound on Monday, 5W5D, and a they couldn't even see the heartbeat yet. Neither the tech nor the doctor seemed concerned as it was still pretty early. The tech assured me that "next week there will be a visible baby and heartbeat!"
With my son, I had an ultrasound done at 5W1D (they thought I was much further along) and again, no visible heartbeat. Went back 2 weeks later and we saw a good, strong heartbeat. That's what I'm hoping for this time around! I really wish I wouldn't have had ultrasounds done so early because even though everything looks good at this point, it is worrisome to not see much.
That little babe still has time for its heartbeat to get stronger! Hoping for the best for you and that baby!
  • @Thatgirlwithglasses Try not to worry! I had an US at 5 weeks 6 days too, and the OB said the heart probably started beating that day. I don't even think she measured it.. a lot can change in a few days! I bet your scan after Christmas will be a great one
