Any 2+ timers ever have a toddler in a leg cast?

My 2.5 yr old thought it would be a great time to get a buckling fracture in his leg on Friday.  :(  He is such a trooper and his resilience is totally amazing to me BUT now I am the one needing to carry him for the next 4 weeks while he has his cast on (can't out weight on his leg.)  Has any been in this situation?  He is small weight wise but always hated being worn - I might try it again since I'm not so keen lugging a 30 lb toddler around while pregnant.  We got out the stroller again but the weather has been gross, icy, and rainy and looks that way a lot in the coming weeks.  Anyway - we can't avoid going out but when we are home, any helpful hints on how to keep him occupied?  Also, sleeping positions that might make him more comfortable?  I've been sleeping with him the past couple nights and his pain is definitely worse at night time.  TIA for any input!

**side note - Of course Santa is bringing hims balance bike for Chirstmas and his brother is getting an indoor trampoline.   **

  • @FSUNole31 - Thank you!  Luckily my parents live close by so they could take my older one when I took DS2 to the ER.  We also have amazing friends who have offered to make us dinner, brought over ice cream, "get well" cards, and donuts already.  Sleep is the only thing he really having a hard time with (which means, I'm not sleeping and = more headaches for me!) This too shall pass for sure.  He is a very active dude so I guess the blessing in disguise is that it happened in the winter not the spring or summer.

  • @Turbotastic that's awesome for close help and great friends.  My son is also super active so I can't imagine having to contain him.  I hope he (and you) find a comfortable way to sleep soon!!

  • I'm sorry. Ds broke his leg last summer. He was 2yrs old but I wasn't pregnant at the time. We were told to not let him walk on it but then the dr said "but you can't really stop him". He was walking (well more limping) around a week after. He crawling, scooted.. Did whatever he needed to to get around. He was even outside riding his balance bike with a cast on! The first few nights I remember giving him pain meds so he could sleep. I don't remember having him sleep in any different positions. I guess he just wiggled around till he was comfy. We've always co-slept so he was in bed with us. Kids are amazing and the 7wks went fast. Hopefully your little guy heals quickly.
  • My brother broke his femur when he was like 15-16 months old I think. He was in a body cast! I remember we didn't go anywhere very often while the cast was on. I'm sure we just watched a lot of TV and movies with him. Plus I was 10 and my other brother was 8 so we entertained him too. When we did go out he wouldn't fit in his car seat so he sat on a bunch of pillows with the seat reclined a little and the regular seat belt on. I think we only took him to the Dr though. What about coloring books, puzzles, stickers, painting.... Pinterest crafts??

I'm so sorry. I don't have any suggestions but just wanted to offer a sympathetic apology. Hope these next few weeks fly by for both of you!

    Edit: posted too soon
  • Oh my goodness you have my sympathies.  Getting a 2.5 year old to stay in place is a special kind of challenge.  Our go-to seated entertainment options (when DS2 was sick and needed to rest) are Magnatiles and the Kindle. I wish you both the easiest recovery possible.

  • Thank you @Xath @MotherofDragons  @andrea0418and @alm52386 (A BODY CAST!?  I can't even imagine...)

I ordered a "art lap board" thing so hopefully that will help. - we loaded up on stickers and coloring books and I have holiday dvds at the ready! (I do feel terrible for my 4.5 yr old though...  Stuck inside and not having his brother really play with I think is harder on him than the one with the broken leg!!)

He is trying to stand on it so full time supervision is necessary BUT he slept through the night last night without pain meds so YAY!  I guess I need to get pinteresty but wheres the time for that!?!  I'm not crafty so it comes very slowly to me.  I also need to find our Kindle Fire charger.  My house is such a disaster, I'm losing my mind in the clutter!

  • *raises hand* my last pregnancy (which was over the summer) my 4 (almost 5) year old broke his leg. He is 45lbs as well. *TW* My pregnancy didn't last but please do not think this had anything to do with it.*

We got a toddler wheel chair. He loved rolling  around in it, once he learned he could push the wheels himself. We also taught him to scoot on his butt using his arms. That gave me some relief. I still had to take him to the bathroom and bed, and some other things.

as for bed, we put him on his back and his leg elevated on a pillow.

My son was amazing through this. Had such an amazing attitude. He also had skull surgery at 2.5 and was amazing through that. He had to sleep in a car seat that was tied inside his crib for three months and never complained. I think God gave him this attitude because he has had to deal with a lot. we already had a trip to Sesame Street Place in PA and we still went. He couldn't go on a few rides and all water rides but still had an amazing attitude. All the characters would jump off the stages to hug him which was the best to him.

Good luck Mamma!! I know how hard this is.
  • @Wino0920  You're previous situation sounds so much worse than my current one! (summer, older child, more lbs to carry!)  I'm so sorry for what you've gone through (the skull surgery sounds intense in itself!!!) and so happy your dude had a great attitude!  Mine also has this resiliency that is outstanding to me.  He's figured out how to get crawl/scoot/drag himself around our playroom already and hasn't complained in two days about any pain.  Not sure he is big enough (or coordinated enough) for a toddler wheel chair right now but I'll ask if the ortho thinks its necessary or beneficial.  Thanks for the sleeping hint!

Side note - Are you close to Sesame Place?  I'm about 45 mins to an hour from there!

  • @Turbotastic No, I live in Michigan. It took us 9 hours to drive there I think. Actually 10. We stopped in Pittsburg so we broke it up. It was such a fun trip though. We hit Crayola, Sesame Place, and Hershey's! Lol!

im so happy to hear that he is resilient as well. I think kids just are while we whine! Haha.

Ill try to think of more tips for you.

Don't underestimate your situation. You have your plate full and I feel for ya girl!
  • @Wino0920 - That sounds like a packed but fun trip!  We haven't been to any of those (although I don't think Crayola is close) and we've lived 45 minutes away for two years.

I get through things by underestimating LOL Making it "not a big deal" makes me stress less and feel better --- probably how I think I can run my own birth business, take care of this house and daily life things and take on three kids under 5 :) Piece of cake, right?!

    Thank you for your support!
