*Trigger Warning* Spotting

Has anyone had a chemical pregnancy? I got my BFP on Wednesday. I took a test this morning and the line is way lighter and now I'm spotting. I'm not even 5 weeks yet so it's not a miscarriage I don't think. If this is a chemical pregnancy this will be my second early loss. I guess I'll wait longer to test next time around to avoid this.

Hi! Sorry you're going through this! A chemical pregnancy is indeed a pregnancy, the embryo just didn't properly implant. Since you said you aren't quite 5 weeks are you just a couple days past your missed period? Maybe just further implantation spotting. I know the test shows lighter but you never know, they aren't quite as good as a blood/beta test.
I would suggest you reach out to Emerg or your Dr. They'll be able to confirm if you are losing it or if it's not lost too!! If you are losing the pregnancy, you should get checked out for Rh, thyroid etc just to be sure there isn't something you can do to help prevent a miscarriage in the future.  Most of the time it's chromosome related but, and I'm one of them, it could be as simple as an elevated thyroid number or low progesterone and they can help with all of that.
I hope everything works out for you - let us know how you make out. FX **virtual hug**

  • I second having a beta test. I had a miscarriage in October. No spotting but it just didn't feel "right". I knew something was off. My period was very late but the lines on the HPT were always very light, never got dark like my first pregnancy or this one where my BFP was well before my missed period and very thick and dark. I had my hCG levels drawn and sure enough, they weren't doubling, they were barely increasing at all. Made it to 75 before the OB said this was going to end badly. 3 days later at almost 6 weeks I started bleeding and naturally miscarried. If your numbers are strong and your progesterone looks good, then maybe it's just a natural part of your pregnancy journey. Spotting seems to be pretty common from this and my prior board. good luck mama!

Thank you for your response! I do have thyroid issues but I'm on medication for it.

  • I've had two CPs and two babies. After my CPs I started baby aspirin and progesterone after BFP and had two healthy babies. Now preg with #3. I swear by the baby aspirin.
  • I have had at least one.... maybe two. Didn't ever test on the second one but was a couple days late and my period was HEAVY. Anyway, both led to some pretty heavy bleeding pretty quickly.  Hang in there! Lighter line could be morning vs. night pee and test differences. I know limbo SUCKS.
  • Sorry you are going through this - had spotting through my first tri with DD, its scary as hell! I hope it works out for you

Keeping my fx for you. I had spotting and some red blood too early on in my pregnancy. So far everything is good! Hope this works out for you!

Thanks! I tested with FMU both times so I don't think that was the problem :(

  • It's recommended by some MDs for women with recurrent early loss. Can assist with implantation and blood flow. Google "baby aspirin miscarriage" not exactly sure of the science but both of my OBs said to do it. https://www.verywell.com/low-dose-aspirin-and-miscarriages-2371795
  • I have had 2 chemical pregnancies.  They are pregnancies and my doctor did refer to them as miscarriages.  I had an early +HPT followed by a lighter one the next day.  I started bleeding the following day.  My second, I had a +HPT followed by bleeding the next day.  The morning after the day of spotting I knew it was over.

I would definitely call your your doctor and let help you decide.  They can run betas.  You can also have it documented so that if you are having a CP, further steps can be taken if necessary like a repeat loss panel, that may help you figure out what is going on, and come up with a plan.

I am so sorry you are going through this.

Thanks I'll ask my doctor about it when I talk to her!

Thanks, I wasn't sure if the doctors counted that as a miscarriage or not. Did your doctor have you wait to try again? I know they all vary in what they recommend but I'm hoping I don't have to wait to try again.

  • @nbcarlson my doctor did not tell me to wait to try again.

  • I had a chemical pregnancy in July. I got a faint positive and thought it was just because I was testing early. The next morning I had another faint positive. The next morning it was even fainter. The next day it was so faint I could hardly see it. I knew something was wrong. I had two previous, healthy pregnancies and by that point the line was always thick and dark. Three days after the first positive I began to bleed. It started off light and then picked up and I began having cramps. We lost the baby at around 4 1/2 weeks. I hate the term chemical pregnancy. It makes it sound like it wasn't real. But it's absolutely a loss, and a form of miscarriage. Don't let anyone belittle what you are experiencing (if the worst turns out to be true).

I very much hope that's not what you are experiencing. Praying for you mama.
  • a chemical pregnancy is considered a miscarriage. Just an early one, it's call chemical because it was only "chemically" confirmed, no ultrasound. I had one last month, got a faint bfp and over the next few days the lines weren't really getting darker. i had my hcg levels checked, came in at 19 then dropped to 7, and the next day i started bleeding.

See this as a good sign, your body can get pregnant, just need to hold on. I read somewhere where if its your first, your body is sorta in shock, and the second time around its more prepared.

Sorry you're going  through this - good luck, I hope you get a sticky bean soon!
