Pityriasis Rosea

I'm 10.5 weeks today. Developed a rash on my chest about 2 weeks ago. Didn't really think much of it, thought maybe eczema but it's not itchy. I'm a nurse so I was talking to one of the doctors at work about it amd showed him pictures and he thinks it's pityriasis rosea. Of course I can't find anything positive about this condition and pregnancy! I left a message at my OBs office to hopefully squeeze me in today as my rash as gotten worse in the last 24 hours. Has anyone else dealt with this before? I need to hear some good news this morning. First pregnancy and I'm freaking out about it. Being hormonal doesn't help either!

Re: Pityriasis Rosea

  • Yikes I had that about 13 years ago and had to take antibiotics!!! Hope you get a treatment that helps get rid of it and is safe!!!

  • Btw I went to a derm for it
  • I've had it twice--good luck!  I was a kid the first time, and they had me going into UV chambers and stuff.  The second time was 15 years ago and I believe I had to take antibiotics.  Did the rash look like a christmas tree?  That is the telltale sign.

  • I had it once, but my doctor just let it run its course. It was unsightly, but harmless.
  • Lurking from July. Pretty sure I have this too...my derm (who I don't really trust) just scanned me over and said it was eczema. It's spread from originally my chest to my arms, neck, stomach back and face. I never had the herald spot but I have the other red spots all over. Definitely not eczema. My OB had no idea what it was so I guess I'm just stuck. Hoping for the best outcome for you, googling it in regards to the 1st trimester was not a good idea for me.

  • I'm pretty sure it's harmless. Can take up to 6 weeks to go away on its own. Can treat with Benadryl if you want, just check in with your OB first.

  • Yeah......so it's harmless not in pregnancy, @MrsCaliRN

  • Benadryl hasn't been working and neither has oatmeal creams. I have an appt with my OB tomorrow afternoon. It seems like I have all of the symptoms for this. One of the first signs is cold symptoms which I have been battling for about 3 weeks. I guess it can lead to miscarriage or being a high risk pregnancy for premature delivery.
  • It is starting to spread down the side of my abdomen..so kind of like a tree I guess?
  • Yeah......so it's harmless not in pregnancy, @MrsCaliRN
Aw, lady. I'm sorry you're dealing with these fears. I hope everything goes ok. Keep us posted - your concerns are valid and we are here for you.
  • Hence "I'm pretty sure" and "check with your OB." I hope you're getting answers, OP. Let us know what comes of it!

  • Saw my dr today. He wasn't as concerned as I was. Wants some bloodwork for liver function. Told me to buy some hydrocortisone cream. So if it doesn't go away in a week or so I will follow up with my family doctor since my OB will be away for a couple weeks. Everything looked perfect on ultrasound.
  • @bigj4 *Lurking from Aug17* I had it twice (very uncommon) in a year (even less rare). The first time was on my neck and looked like a hickey. I burned my neck with my curling iron right next to it, so I looked fabulous. The second time my clueless coworker thought she was seeing my nipples (because the herald patches were in that area, but like 3 inches higher). It did not resolve either time until treated with multiple creams. Hydrocortisone didn't work. I also had  triamcinolone acetonide, clobetasol, and ketoconazole. I can't remember, but it got dramatically better when I used one of them. I think I was scratching and may have gotten bacteria in there too, so hands off!
It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most...not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes... There's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know! *ZBB*

Haven't posted here in a while....
@bigj4 I had this about 10 years ago - got a bunch of misdiagnoses in the US - they thought it was scabies then ringworm... I went to see my dermatologist in the Caribbean - I had it all over my trunk with the telltale herald patch on my back.  He prescribed a topical ointment, no oral antibiotics, and it cleared up quickly.  I recommend seeing a dermatologist in person for diagnosis.  Especially since you don't want to be taking antibiotics unnecessarily.  I don't know about the implications for pregnancy though.

    Edit: herald not emerald  :D

  • I had it and started with a herald patch that the school nurse tried to send me home thinking it was ringworm.

For me personally, it was extremely itchy but lasted a week or so then it disappeared.  Glad to hear you aren't itchy as that was the worst part!
