Water intake

I'm curious what everyone's doctors have said about water / fluid intake (if anything). I know we can't all be expected to drink the same amount since we have different body weights. I found this calculator online. Ironic because it's called flat belly, but whatever. I wish they had a pregnancy option...

It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most...not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes... There's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know! *ZBB*

Re: Water intake

  • I seriously almost peed my pants today on my way home. An hour commute plus water = mistake. I normally don't drink a lot and yesterday was about 64 oz. Today it was only 32 oz., but I hate forcing it and I can't just leave my students alone to go to the bathroom during the day. I feel like I just pee it out immediately anyway. That calculator says I need 43 oz. instead of other sites that are not weight-specific and say 80 oz. Does it really matter that much?

  • I've always drank a lot of water in my prior pregnancies. My doctor never told me a target amount, but I just get very thirsty when pregnant! I have some friends who couldn't drink a lot because it made them feel sick(all the way through third tri even). So I guess- do what feels right!
  • My understanding is half your body weight in ounces of water per day with a little more for nursing and exercise as needed. I am still BFing my youngest about 3x per day so I shoot for 2-3 quarts per day.
  • I crave water when pregnant!!! I especially love Mcdonalds ice water lol
  • Last pregnancy I had a ton of contractions. My cervix started shortening at 21 weeks (my contractions were productive) and my doc said start drinking more water immediately. She recommended almost a gallon a day. It stopped my contractions almost immediately, so I swear by alllllll the water. I drink around 100 ounces a day minimum (and I'm petite). Drink your water ladies!
  • At least a year before pregnancy I got in the habit of drinking at least a gallon a day (128oz) just to keep a healthy amount going in and out.

When you up your water intake, you may pee more regularly at first, but your body will adjust and you'll be able to handle more.
  • My body craves water when I'm pregant. yesterday I drank about 100 oz.
  • My rule has always been 1/2 my body weight in oz. but pregnant I try and get an extra liter in if I can everyday.
  • You need more when pregnant than you do when you're not. And the peeing is going to get worse and worse! You might need to wear heavy pads or see if as you get further along you can have a volunteer or aid in your room.
  • I haven't heard of different water amounts for different weights.

I was advised 12 - 8 ounce cups... so 96 ounces of fluid. So that is water including the other stuff we may drink throughout the day like juice, etc.

I have a 32 ounce bottle. I set a goal for myself to finish one bottle before lunch, one bottle before end of work, and one before bed. I don't always get it all, and yes you WILL pee a lot. But that goes with the territory when you are pregnant and getting well-hydrated.
