California Proposition 65 insight?

So I bought a new ice scraper/snow brush, and when I got home, I noticed this sticker. I don't live in California, and my google search was confusing. Does anybody know more about this law? Do they put these stickers on basically everything, or do I need to be concerned?

  • Right?! I was like wtf? How would an ice scraper cause birth defects?
  • We deal with a lot of the Cal Prop 65 stuff at work. You will be fine, just don't eat it :)
  • They have those all over. It is a law that anything that may have anything in it that has been known to cause birth defects has to be labeled as such if sold or used in the state. They basically have them on the outside of every store, at the swimming pools, everywhere. But it's what makes up the item or the chemicals in it. No harm unless you break it apart and consume it.

  • Thanks for easing my (crazy) mind. I don't think I've ever seen one of those stickers before. I'm in New England.
  • I work in the sustainable building industry and although thats not related to ice scrapers -- I know many plastics in building materials have phthalates in them. Maybe that is the warning?

  • Also, along those lines - from a health standpoint, one of the biggest concerns in a chemical your baby will be exposed to is added formaldehyde in composite wood products from the binder used to hold it all together. Therefore it is in a lot of furniture. You can ask if your crib, etc. is made with any formaldehyde. I know Pottery Barn does not use any added formaldehyde.

  • Here is the "plain english" explanation of the law from the California Government page. There is also a list of the 800 chemicals in question at the top of the "plain english" explanation so you can browse it. Some of the chemicals listed are medications and others are ingredients in a lot of plastics and such like BPA. There are some other things on the list also. You can click on anything on the list and it'll send you to a page with more information.
