Ditto from above. I've never had someone try to touch LO, but people always want to peek. I usually oblige but it is somewhat annoying after the 78875 person asks to see him. Just keep your hands ready to swat anyone should they go near LO.
I started taking LO in enclosed public places when he was 4 weeks. Like pp said I wouldn't let people touch him and when ever possible I would keep him in his carseat covered with a blanket.
LO visited grandparents and cousins at 2 days. At 5 days she went to the doctor, out to eat, and to Walmart. She had been to Walmart four times by two weeks old. People are good at looking but not touching.
I've been taking LO about since day 1. Our pediatrician approved and said as long as no one touches him or gets in his face, it's actually good for him to get out and get fresh air. I either keep him in the infant seat/strolled with a cover on or I wear him in the moby. People ask for peaks and I oblige but sort of hover so they don't get too close. We do take him out of his seat at restaurants and walk him around when he's fussy but again, NO TOUCHIE!
ETA: I'm actually more hesitant to take him to large family gatherings because everyone wants to hold/kiss all over him.
Also, just use hand sanitizer before touching him yourself and I use sanitizing wipes to wipe down the handle of the carrier/stroller after we've been out.
