MMC Options

Hi all. My husband and I went in for our first scan today which should have been at 10w5d. There was a fetal pole measuring at 7w5d and no heartbeat. I haven't had any cramping or bleeding so far except for a tiny bit of pink tinged mucus tonight.

For those that have have had a mmc did you decide to let it happen naturally, get the cytotec or do a D&C? My OB said that would let me go for up to 2 weeks to see if anything happens on its own, so I'm leaning towards that. I'm so confused and In shock still that I wish it would just happen already.

I found out I had a mmc at 10wk and baby dies at 6.5wk. For me since it had been a month and I hadnt had any spotting or cramps or anything really I decided to go with the D&C. It's so hard to hear the news that there is no heart beat when only a while ago you thought everything is fine. It's all a shock and don't be afraid to process it. Grief needs to be dealt with and processed. In regards to your decision, I think whatever you feel most comfortable with is the best. There are pros and cons to each option and you have to decide what's best for you.

Hi.... I saw your goodbye post in the July month and I want to say sorry. I am also from that month and had same thing happen this past week unfortunately. I am going to try and let my body deal with it naturally but I also feel like I wish it would just happen. I don't have any advice because I'm in the same boat and never experienced this but I just wanted to say your not alone and I know how you feel.

My OB just gave me the option to do a D&C or wait it out. They didn't even give any time frame like you. I got my blood drawn and they said I would new to make an appointment in two weeks to get more blood drawn and that was it. I was not told about cytotec... is that a pill ?

Yes, it's a pill. She said that you typically start to miscarry within 24 hours of the pill but that the cramps are a lot more intense and there's a chance of needing a d&c anyway.

I was waiting for my body to do it in its own. It did but I ended up with a d and c as well because the scan was still showing I was still preg. I had 3 days of very heavy bleeding before I had the d and c. I felt so relieved after the d and c. I wouldn't have been able to take another nite of cramping and bleeding. I completely get wanting to wait for it to happen on its own. It's such a traumatic thing. I'm so sorry you have to go through this.

Well if they push for a D&C maybe I can just ask about the pill to at least have one more try without doing the procedure. I hope you don't mind if I ask questions in your thread instead of starting a new one. If you do just let me know.

I had a miscarriage on 12/01. I was 9w4d pregnant, and even had my 8 week ultrasound and we heard the heartbeat and everything. I thought everything was fine until I started feeling crampy 11/30. It was more painful than the implantation cramping I felt at around week 5-6, but LESS painful than my regular period, so I thought it was totally normal. I called my OB on the 2nd day of cramping and was told to take Tylenol. I did that and felt better but started spotting that second day. Within a few minutes of spotting, I got up to take a phone call (the perinatal office to schedule my 12 week ultrasound, ironically) and that's when the heavy bleeding started. I called my OB to see if I could be seen but at 4pm they said the doc had gone home for the day. (so angry). I went to ER and they did an ultrasound and could not find a heartbeat. I went to the obgyn the next morning and opted to do D&C because my body was not getting rid of it on its own.... the fetus was still in tact. I did a D&C to just 'get it over with' and I couldn't stand the thought of WAITING to have my body expel it. I had cervical scar tissue from a cryofreezing I had done a decade ago, and my obgyn said I was not dilated at all, so I opted for D&C. I did not want to take a pill to induce cramping and pain, I'd rather be knocked out and let the doc take care of everything. I had the D&C on tuesday 12/6 and was told to take Methylergonovine to 'shrink my uterus back to normal shape'. It does cause cramping but I am also taking ibuprofen. The pill is only taken for 48 hours so I'll be done with it this afternoon. I just want to move on. I couldn't possibly sit in my house another day knowing there was still an in tact fetus in me, and the baby was not living. The hardest part about all this is that we did IVF and got pregnant on our first try. We also did 3 cycles of letrozole and had 2 failed IUIs. So it just hurts a little extra when I think back at EVERYTHING we went through physically, emotionally, and monetarily, just for a miscarriage to happen. I am extremely angry and beside myself, but I still have this tiny bit of hope in the bottom of my broken heart. I have to keep going. I have to stay positive. There's just nothing else for me to do but keep moving forward.

I am so sorry for your loss. I was also from the July board and last week at my 9w checkup there was no heartbeat. We had seen the heartbeat two weeks earlier and the doctor said it most likely stopped beating only a few days prior to my 9w appointment due to the size of the baby. I opted for the D&C and had it done last Friday. I chose this option because I wanted to get it over with so that I could try and move on and it honestly sounded less traumatizing. This was my first pregnancy so I don't have any other experience but so far I'm glad I went the D&C route. My doctor told me it could've taken a month or more for my body to naturally miscarry.

I opted for the D&C. Like @Amanda1443994, I felt like it would be less traumatizing to get it done and over with. Now, looking back, I'm really glad I did. With my second I had to wait and it was torture.
