Strep B Positive

My doctor let me know that I was Strep B positive (they found it in my urine) at my last appointment.  I'm sort of relieved because she said since I have a history of ridiculously short labors, that if I make it to 39 weeks I'll be induced so that I can get a round of antibiotics.  Which will hopefully mean me not giving birth on the side of the road.  Anyone else SB+ in other pregnancies?  Google research is sort of terrifying lol

Re: Strep B Positive

  • I was with my daughter. Honestly, from what I understood, it meant I needed to have 2 rounds of antibiotics before pushing. Antibiotics are given to the baby if you don't make it. I was ready to push for about 45 minutes while they were still giving me my second round. My labor was 5 hours. Luckily, DD held on. Hopefully if they induce you they'll time it so you're not cutting it that close.

  • I was with my son.  No big thing, just had to have the two rounds of antibiotics during labor.  My water broke with him so I just went in right away and got the doses no problem.

  • I had it with DD, it was also found in my urine at 12 and then 36 weeks.  only thing that annoyed me was that they wouldn't give me the epidural until the first round of antibiotics was in...I was 6cm when admitted and the nurse was like "I'm really going to slam this in for you, it might hurt" haha.  it took maybe 10-15 minutes to get the whole bag in.  got a second bag right before pushing.  I had to get a shot to slow labor down anyway bc DDs heart rate dropped so I had time for both.  and DD was sunny side up so I would up pushing for 2.5 hours anyway.  I've never heard of being induced for it...I figure if I have it again I'll just head to the hospital early knowing that second labors tend to be faster.  DDs labor was about 14 hours (I was admitted to the hospital for the last 6).
  • I had it also and like PPs said, it's just a few rounds of IV antibiotics before birth. I've always been induced, however, my last labor went so fast (3 hours) that I only managed to get one bag of antibiotics.
  • I had it with both as well. I had to be induced with both though, so getting in my rounds was no big deal. I asked what would happen if I had a fast labor and they weren't concerned. They said they would get in as much as they could and then give the baby antibiotics.
  • Thank you for all your advice ladies!!  Both of my labors have been less than an hour from start to finish, which is why I'll have to be admitted to the hospital for the antibiotics first.  :#  I'm glad to hear that if I happen to go before being induced they can give the baby the antibiotics!
  • I had it last time (but they didn't check until 36 weeks!) and it was no big deal. Just two rounds of penicillin before pushing.

This blows my mind!! Sorry to be off topic, but wow! I'm a STM this round and would just be happy for my last 20 hour labor to be halved. Less than an hour - you're a birthing goddess, mama!!

Hahahaha, it's both a blessing and a curse.  No time for meds, but fast.  Fast, but terrified of giving birth in the passenger seat of my car  :#:D  I made it to 39 weeks with my son so I got to be induced, I'm praying it happens again!!
  • I want to add that your strep B status can fluctuate which is why they typically don't even test for it until your closer to delivery (around 35/36 weeks is common)  It kind of baffles me that you would be tested for it so soon.

  • @Turbotastic They detected it in my urine at my 10 week appointment!
  • @CurlyMommy416 - I saw that.  I'm saying that its really uncommon to test for GBS this early.  And usually its tested by a swab of your vaginal opening.  Just strange to me.  If it were me, I would do some research and ask lots of questions if my MW brought that up this early.

  • I have no idea why they test early, maybe it's standard for this practice to test urine cultures early on just to see :) This CDC Q&A was really helpful:

  • I was positive with my last pregnancy and was getting induced due to GD. It was no big deal.

Evidence Based Birth did an article on GBS not too long ago. A google search should pull it right up; if someone was looking for some evidenced based information.

I'm with @Turbotastic , it's pretty pointless to test of it at this point. Your status could change in two weeks.

I was GBS+ with DD1. I was relieved to not be with DD2. I hated having to deal with the IV and au natural is my preferred route of birthing.

  • @CurlyMommy416 - routine urine cultures are done at my practice too at the initial OB visit. This just means yours grew out GBS.

The positive urine culture means you're colonized and I believe will mean you're considered positive for your whole pregnancy. You'll be saved the 36w butt swab!

  • **Lurking from another BMB, found this post searching for GBS**

@BelhurstBride @Turbotastic: My OB explained to me that testing positive for GBS in your urine is different than testing positive with a swab.  If it's found in your urine you are considered "super colonized" so you automatically get antibiotics if you have GBS bacteriuria at any point during your current pregnancy.
  • I had it with my son. I also got a call after my first appointment with the same news that I had strep in my urine. She pretty much told me the same thing.
  • @BelhurstBride - I'm an Evidence Based Birth Instructor :) So awesome to see people reading Rebecca's stuff.  She's a fantastic human being and such a huge advocate for women in the maternal medicine system.

This.  I never required vaginal culture to check for gbs because it was found in my urine multiple times, including at 36 weeks.
