Sabra hummus

I apologize if there is already a thread for this but I searched on my phone and didn't find anything.

I'm sure most of you are aware of the recall on Sabra products. I'm freaking out a bit because I think I had some Sabra in Oct. I haven't had any symptoms and my OB doesn't want to do blood work because I'm asymptomatic. Just wondering if anyone else is in the same boat and whether you are getting any testing done.

Re: Sabra hummus

  • I knew about this.  But now I know why all the hummus was pulled out of our work snack fridges.  I walked all the way across campus searching fridges for hummus yesterday.

Is listeria a concern if you don't have any symptoms?

  • I believe you would've had pretty immediate symptoms if there was an issue with what you ate. I wouldn't worry.

  • I also don't think they actually found listeria in any food either.  It was found in the manufacturing facility so Sabra recalled everything to be safe, but as far as I know there haven't been any traces of listeria found in any food and no one has gotten sick, so I think that combined with no symptoms means you're probably completely fine.

Yes, this. I just read up on it (to make sure what I said about symptoms is correct) and there was no listeria found in any of their food.

  • You guys are right about it not being found in the products...just the facilities. It just makes me nervous still. Also, not everyone gets symptoms which is part of the reason pregnant women need to careful. I know I'm probably overreacting but it's so hard to not analyze every little thing that can go wrong.
  • @chocolatelemons I don't think you're overreacting at all.  Or at least, maybe you are but I think it's pretty reasonable.  I worry freak out about things like this too and have a hard time moving past the worry, even with overwhelming evidence that I am being ridiculous.  During our 20-week scan DS was sleeping in the "frog" position and like a week later I read that that position can be a soft marker for Down Syndrome.  Even though we had the quad screen and I was super low risk AND there were no other signs of Down Syndrome at all AND lots of times babies just hang out in that position in the womb, I spent like a week worrying about it and googling like crazy.

Anyway, the point is I get your worry.  But please no it seems extremely unlikely anything is wrong, especially since they haven't found any trace of listeria in any actual food.
  • I have a container of sabra with pine nuts inn the fridge that hasn't been opened yet. I keep hoping they give the all clear somehow so I can dig in because I miss it.  I bought a different brand the other day but it's just not the same.

  • UO: Trader Joe's hummus is soooooo much better than Sabra.

  • I almost bought some hummus on sale about a month ago but ended up taking it out of my cart. Seems there is a recall on hummus pretty regularly and although I love it, it's not worth the risk.
  • @nda_roxybabe  Mayo clinic website says "Symptoms may begin a few days after you've eaten contaminated food, but it may take as long as two months before the first signs and symptoms of infection begin."
  • So I spoke with my actual doctor (I spoke with the on call nurse practitioner earlier) an hour ago and she agreed to put in a blood test order for me. She doesn't think it's necessary but she knows how much it's bothering me. So I'm going in tomorrow and I'll have the results next week.

I know I'm being really cautious but I hope this puts my mind at ease.

@RainyDays86 it's so hard to stop googling things! I do it all the time too.

I ate four out of a six-pack of single servings of Sabra hummus. It was over a two-week period, during which I had two isolated incidents of diarrhea. But I've had all sorts of GI weirdness this pregnancy so it wasn't totally unusual. I told my OB practice and even asked the perinatologist after my 12-week scan, and they weren't concerned. My scan was good, and we heard a good heartbeat a week later at my last appointment, so I'm a lot less worried now. And, for what it's worth, in all my obsessive reading I came across a paper put out by ACOG that said no testing was necessary for asymptomatic pregnant women who may have eaten listeria-tainted food. Hope that helps!
  • I ate two packs of the single serve the day before it was recalled. I'm very "meh" about it. I'm sure you're fine, it's nice of your doctor to double check for you.

Homemade hummus is very easy to make and so much better!!!! Try that if you're craving it and don't want to open the sabra.

  • @slowmo I came across a similar article and my OB said the same thing about asymptomatic pregnant women. I'm just being overly cautious even though I know everything is fine.

I've also read that nothing has been found in the actual food... Just the facilities.

  • Good to know @MamaMiller! I don't have any right now but was planning to get some soon. Thanks for the heads up.

  • I have had a ton of their hummus in the past Couple months (major craving). My doctor wasn't concerned at all because I don't have any symptoms. The last time I had it was 2 ish weeks ago and he said the symptoms appear relatively quick. If you are a symptomatic, you are fine!
  • Hey all. My mom has just gotten Listeria from this hummus. She bought it in Indiana. She is exhibiting the exact symptoms (confusion, balance issues, and muscle stiffness and pain) and her SKU number was in the recall. She's ok thank goodness, and apparently just has to "ride it out".

  • @sweaterboots that's awful! I hope it's short lived. I'm glad it wasn't worse than it is

  • @pshaortaoit is so crazy!  I am trying to convince her to go into a medical doctor but she is very "natural only" and prefers a natural practice.  The problem is that people are still reporting that no one has gotten it, because no one has been "documented".  I'm trying to get her to go in so she can be a confirmed case so people will take it seriously.  I was home visiting 2 weeks ago and she offered me hummus from the SAME CONTAINER.  Luckily hummus tastes terrible during my pregnancy so I declined....but what if??

  • @sweaterboots  You should definitely get* your mom to a medical doctor for the reporting issue and more.  What if she was mis-diagnosed and it's something worse?

*I realize we often have no control over what our parents (or anyone else for that matter) choose to do regarding their own medical conditions.

Full disclosure: I prefer medical science to homeopathy.  So take this as you will.

  • @sweaterboots That's awful! I hope your mom gets the care that she needs and also gets that documented!

Also so has anyone else noticed listeria symptoms are pretty similar to pregnancy symptoms? Confusion, check! Balance issues, check! Muscle pain, check! Lol I know that listeria symptoms are not the same as pregnancy symptoms but I can't help but notice the similarities. Which is a good reminder that when in doubt, get it checked out!

  • @NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot - My stubborn Taurus mom and I just had a pretty big disagreement while I was home about her tendencies to put things off and to depend on supplements for literally EVERYTHING and to not trust doctors.  My dad, who never got regular physicals, passed away from cancer and I've tried to plead with my mom to get a medical physical once a year and she still refuses. I can tell you right now I have no say in this particular matter :(

  • I'm sorry @sweaterboots. I know how the parents & grandparents can be about these things.

  • @sweaterboots That's terrible that your mom is sick. I hope you're able to get her to see a doctor. When I read that no one has gotten sick yet, my first thought was undocumented cases as well.

It is really hard to push someone to see a doctor when they want to do the natural route. My in-laws are like that too and it drives me nuts sometimes.
