Constipation

I know we talked about constipation on another thread with other symptoms a while back, but I need help and figured others might benefit.
I've been constipated for a couple weeks. Metamucil helped at first, but now I've been blocked up for 3+ days with barely anything coming out.
Milk of magnesia was on my list of safe treatment methods from my doctor.  I took 2 Tbs. Tonight and vomited about 20 minutes later.  I just tried again to take 2Tbs. Because I really need it to get into my intestines. Any advice? Others with the same issues? What are people using to help?

Re: Constipation

  • Metamucil every day, 100mg of colace twice a day, tucks pads if you get a hemorrhoid. All on doctor's safe list. I had to use this the entire time I was pregnant with DS and it has started again with this one. In fact it continue the 3 years after DS was born. I don't know WHAT that kid did to my digestion.

  • My doctor recommends a stool softener for constipation.  It works pretty well for me.  I also always have some on hand for the end of pregnancy and post partum to make things easier.

@JessyKV Which one do you use?

Don't remind me of the post partum poops.  ::shudder::  I swear I think my first poop post partum was worse that labor.  if only you could get an epidural for it it might not be so bad ;-)
  • I swear by eating a handful of dried prunes a day. Take them with you to the hospital and I swear you won't dread your post partum poops and the poops that come after.  I was so constipated with my first and through a recommendation gave it a try and it worked.  If you are really plugged up it takes a couple of days, but then if you eat them everyday you'll be blessed with a poop a day.
  • I've started drinking 12 oz of strong coffee every morning and I'm getting regular again. For the majority of this first trimester the smell of coffee made me gag, so I'm happy I can drink it again!
  • I take 3 stool softeners a day and eat a ton of fiber. I've always struggled with constipation pregnant or not.
  • Getting a Squatty Potty helps, too -- honestly. It's like a little stool that you put your feet up on when you're sitting on the toilet that changes the position/flow of how things come out. www.squattypotty.com
  • I just want to tell you, you are definitely not alone. Last week was the absolute worst! I week an entire week without going, including thanksgiving!! We had family pictures on Saturday and my stomach was so bloated I looked so pregnant. On Sunday I finally had relief and my stomach went back to flat... which drove me kinda insane because now all these pictures just remind me that I was so stuffed and it wasn't just a baby!
  • I take 3 colase a day by doctors recommendation and it helps but there are still days I don't go or it's hard to go so a lot of us are in the same boat as you.

@kyreno11 - that constipation is no joke.  I have laid in bed in total pain of not being able to poo.   Not nice baby, not nice!!!  I also take Metamucil daily, and when things get bad, I bring out the Miralax (stool softener) which my doctor said was perfectly safe towards pregnancy.  Good luck!!!

  • I switched my prenatal vitamins when this started happening to me.  I also love pineapple and eat a ton of it.  It's high in fiber and def helps!
  • Eat more fiber!  I skip the meds and make sure I eat beans, spinach, cereal, those Fiber One bars, etc... usually helps me start!
  • I make a smoothie a day and put chia seeds in it.  I go every day if I do this.
  • I second the suggestion of a handful of prunes.  Works for me and I think they taste good.

  • I've had terrible constipation lately. I haven't pooped in 4 days. I have a diet high in fiber and have since shortly after I started TTC back in 2015. I drink plenty of water. I try to get some exercise everyday. I've been doing fiber gummies for some extra fiber since a high fiber diet alone wasn't cutting it. I started doing colace everyday. And still no poops. I tried a little miralax yesterday since a friend of mine said her OB had it on the "safe list" for pregnancy. I was hoping that would do the trick but so far nothing.

@kyreno11 You're definitely not alone in the struggle with constipation

  • I'm taking colace but it isn't helping.  I've resorted to using suppositories (fun stuff) and that's helping a little.

  • @NamelessAria it will take a couple of doses of miralax or colace to work because neither one is a stimulant laxative.

  • Is anyone having the opposite problem...?  Normally, I poop every 2-3 days, and I have to eat a lot of fiber just to make that happen. Now that I'm pregnant I have these sudden urges to go, my stomach starts cramping, and I have to find a toilet immediately. It's almost turned into clockwork, every morning before 10am I need have my schedule clear haha. And I've noticed that if I don't have to poop some mornings, my morning sickness gets truly awful right around 10am. Oh the miracles of pregnancy!
