Winter is coming! And my coat won't fit!!

I have a beautiful chic coat that is super tight. I barely fit into it now. With winter closing in and will probably last all through second trimester, what are you all planning to do?

Also, I feel like it will hide how pregnant I am and I won't get a seat on the train..... It was much easier to score with an autumn baby....

  • Hahaha at the train comment. With DD2 I just sucked it up and left my coat open. It made for a cold belly but I wasn't outside for long periods of time.

My last one was a May baby, so I wasn't that big in the winter. I stopped wearing the pea coat style coat I had, but could still wear the big ski jacket type. Eventually, I just had to leave it open and I would wear a scarf to keep my neck/belly warm.

I would check out consignment shops for a maternity coat. I feel like styles don't change that much, and coats get even less use than maternity clothes, so you can probably score something like-new secondhand.
  • I bought a coat a size larger in Black Friday.

  • I was just commenting in UO about this. I have very dressy coats that are fitted and a north face coat that is cute and fitted! It's cold where I live through April, I need a coat! Idk to get a normal coat just in a larger size to grow into or buy a maturity. I want a long coat, mid thy!

    Yes. Yes it was.

  • LOL I'm not a GOT fan, but it crossed my mind that this thread title was unusually dramatic. It all makes sense now.
  • @AdaByron it was a huge meme years ago. I knew it before I watched it.

Yeah, it rings a bell now that it was mentioned. I have never watched the show.
  • sorry I didn't mean to hijack - but I LOVE GAME OF THRONES. One of our pups is named Arya :)

I can't wait for the new season.

I almost named my daughter Arya after the character. It didn't work out at the end but it's a great name and the girl is fierce!

  • I have a December baby (gee he's turning 8 in a few days! Make him stop growing!!) and I refused to buy a new coat because I'm stubborn. I just walked around with my belly hanging out. It actually looks super cute! This time around I'm just going to do the same, but I think everybody is different and it would make sense to buy a new coat. Maybe just a size larger since it's not going to be a 9+ belly? That way you could possibly put it to use again with a baby strapped on in a carrier next winter! :)
  • I haven't been pregnant in the US, so am not sure if these are available there, but jacket extenders are a good option. For example:

  • I bought a j crew stadium cloth cocoon coat in purple heather. It's gorgeous and I've never gotten so many compliments on an item. It has a double zipper so you can zipper one all the way up and then also bring the bottom zipper up to make room for belly if needed. We will see if it's as practical as it was supposed to be before I got pregnant!

  • We have real winters where I live - so am wondering about this too.  I was pregnant through the winter in 2015 (July baby), though I needed new pants before the end of the first trimester and put on over 50 pounds gasp!, for some reason I never needed a new coat...  I also expressly did not want to spend money on a new coat that I would wear for a month.  I would wait and see what shape your belly takes....  I was a late popper - happened at the 7 month mark.
  • My DS was a March baby and living in Canada with a big belly right in January- February I ended up buying a new coat. I found a great one that I now just love that has no buttons or zippers but still looks chic. The best part is because it only wraps around, I was able to buy it in my regular size and still wear it now! Plus you have the benefit to wrap it more loosely (for the train seat bonus!) or tighter. If you google "wrap coat" you can find lots of great options!
  • I have a coat that I am just hoping maybe will last. If I run out of room, I'm probably going to borrow my dad's coats or something. I hate winter anyways, and I don't want to have to buy a maternity winter coat!

  • my last was an August baby and I made it through the winter with my regular jacket but it was pretty snug near the end.  I bought a new jacket in September and since we were TTC I made sure to get one that had some room.  Hoping it will work and if not I will steal H's.
  • Huh. I had an October baby last year. I think I just missed that this is a thing. And for those of us who are STMs+, chances are we'll show earlier,  so this is definitely a thing.  Huh. Welp, I live in NH so maybe I"lol go to the Salvation Army and find the most ridiculous out of date coat I can for fun, use it only when my other Eskimo and peacoats don't fit, and wear it like I'm heading to my 1970's prom.

Almost 10 weeks in, and my trusty winter coat is already snug.
  • I've found that by the time my bump is so big that I can't zip my coat, I've also become a human furnace and really only need the thing to keep my arms warm.

  • @Xath I kept waiting for that to happen because I'm always cold but nope. Not that lucky.
  • I bought a coat on sale at macy's that is a little larger than I need currently but has a belt so I can cinch it in at the waist and looks great now, and leave it looser later on when/if needed

  • I've been wearing my pea coat. It normally zips up easily. I struggled to zip it up past my boobs.
