My poor boy

Sooo I haven't  been on here for a bit because I've been coping with my son's issues. Some of you ladies might remember me talking about my little guy crying constantly unless he was nursing. His weight gain is awesome. He currently weighs a little over 9lbs at just under 1 month. So he was getting plenty. So instead of making this all about me I made the hard decision to stop breastfeeding and start him on a hypoallergenic formula. The reason I decided this was because my 4 other children also required this kind of formula. I tried an elimination diet but because I'm allergic to so much stuff i wasn't able to eliminate with success. So back to formula feeding. We saw a drastic difference in his crying spells. He still cried quite a bit but not nearly as much and was sleeping much better. Then I started to notice him sqeeking very loudly. In the medical field they call this stridor. Wait though because that isn't all. He has been regurgitating up into his nose. So we took him to the Dr. who then sent us to the hospital for a swallow study and he was Dx with Gastro Reflux and abnormal swallowing. Now mind you I told the hospital the day he was born that he appeared to have trouble swallowing but they of course blew it off. Dr. Is referring him to a GI specialist and we now have to travel 3 hours away to a children's hospital for him to see a Ped. ENT. He was also prescribed Zantac. Let me just say that so far the Zantac has been awesome. He slept for 6 hours last night! Woke up completely happy for his feeding this morning night. So at this point the specialists will likely be doing a bunch of testing to rule out and determine a cause for the reflux, regurgitation, and stridor. I just want a happy baby. This has been so emotional...

Re: My poor boy

  • I'm so sorry. I know how stressful feeding can be. I'm happy you and your little one are doing much better.

  • @jennlynn777 so sorry to hear your little man has been having trouble with feeding. I hope you get some answers and treatment that works.

I have vocal cord dysfunction and have trouble swallowing / coordination w breathing. Its unrelated to what your LO has but can really empathize with how frustrating it can be to do the most basic of things - swallow without choking.

Sounds like youre doing everything right! Keep up the good work, momma
  • I'm sorry you have to deal with this. I can only imagine how hard it must be, especially having other kids to raise. You are doing your best for your baby so be sure to be gentle on yourself! I hope they figure it out quickly!
  • Glad he is finding some sort of relief with the zantac. I hope you guys find answers and hope it is only medicine he will need to resolve his issues and not anything more. You two are in my thoughts.
  • Aw sorry to hear you've been struggling with all of these issues in your LO. It's not nice watching them suffer and cry. It hurts your heart. Glad to hear you're seeing specialists to get to the bottom of everything. I'm sure everything will regulate itself soon with the medications. Good luck!
  • I'm sorry you have been going through this. Good on you for noticing the symptoms and getting your LO on a path to treatment. I'm glad the Zantac is already giving him some relief and letting you both get some sleep. Keep us posted.
  • I am sorry to hear. I hope all gets better soon and the cause gets figured out. Sounds like the Zantac is helping somewhat which is good.
  • Sorry you're having issues with his feedings and I hope everything gets figured out soon! We had to make the decision of switching to formula and had some issues one that didn't upset DS more. We have her on Gerber soothe now and her crying and fussines has gone down a lot.
  • I'm glad you guys are getting pointed on the right direction to get the answers you need! I hope your LO continues to feel better with the zantac

  • @jennlynn777. Any updates on your LO is he doing ok with the medicine/formula changes?

  • @jennlynn777 glad to hear there is improvement! Did he have any rashes that were attributed to the allergy?
  • Not before but when we switched him to Elecare his whole face broke out. I started to panic because I was worried it was another issue with the formula I was giving him. However, I did some research online that said milk will leave their system anyway it can and that it could take up to 3 months for the side effects of milk to go away. So I decided to hold out and sure enough his face cleared up completely after only about week.
  • I can't imagine dealing with all that! And don't you have 3 or 4 other kids? That has to be stressful!
  •  I did have those days of tears because I felt like a failure as a mommy. One would think after baby number 5 it should be a breeze, but wow is every baby different. It was really tough emotionally. Yes, I have 4 girls as well.  It's nice to have them in school all day but they are incredible big sisters and love to hold him and play with him. They give mommy a much needed break :-)
