Thrush... help!

Sorry for starting my own thread here but I wasn't sure where this should go..,

Oliver was dX with thrush yesterday.  The boys are going to breast, laching a few times and sucking a bit then done.  LC says to wait to really push it until they are 'term' since they are both still low 5 lbs and very sleepy.

Problem - my nipples are killing me now!  Can anyone give me direction on what thrush looks/feels like?  I googled and all I found was red/pink or cracked nipples.  I am cracked but don't know if I need another symptom.  Also - who helps me here?  Do I need to go to the OB?  The LC at my ped?  Any chance the pedi will call it in since Oli has been dX?  I need to pump a little after 8 am and It's already turning my stomach thinking about the pain.

Re: Thrush... help!

  • I wish I knew for sure. I would call your Ob and ask them who to see for this, it is child bearing related. Yah, call Ob. If they say they can't help you, they can at least tell you to call your regular doctor or the lactation consultant.

  • I would for sure call your OB just to be on the safe side. From there I'm sure they will direct on what to do next, i.e. Call the pedi, LC, whatever. I feel like thrush is the kind of thing you want to be proactive with because it can turn into a nightmare.

Sorry youre dealing with this... it sounds terrible :(
  • I'd definitely get some help from pedi/LC. Especially because the "rules" may change since you have two babies and don't want to spread it. All I remember from class is that thrush loves warm, dark, moist environments so we were told to try and air out your breasts as much as possible and just keep them as dry as possible. Hope the pedi/LC can help you!
  • I'd talk with your lactation person... they tend to know more about it than OB's in my experience. If it hurts or if you nipples look "glossy" (smooth and sort of shiny) it's likely. I'm sorry. That's the last thing a mama needs to worry about!

  • Thanks ladies.  I had purchased Earth mama angel baby nipple cream at the recommendation of others... I picked up some Lanolin today and already feel and improvement so maybe it's just cracked nipples from pumping.  Lanolin doesn't seem like it would soothe thrush so I'm hoping I was just panicking this morning  :)

  • Still be really diligent until you know Oliver is clear of it! I've read that it's easily spread back and forth between  mama/baby. if you have coconut oil, you could throw that on there too  (it's antifungal).

Sorry for the extra stress at this early time!!

@DiFazette I had thrush and mastitis with my daughter-- I feel your pain.  Go to pedi to get medication for your child- they will be able to see if the spots are in his/ her mouth.  Go to OB to get medication for you-- it feels like your nipples are being cut with glass and can also be very painful for your child (Note:  if your child had it, more likely than not, you do too).  Also, make sure you SUPER disinfect any pacifiers or bottles you may have used with your child, as well as your breast pump parts every time after you use it.  Finally, make sure you're changing your bra at least once a day, wash them in hot water, and be super diligent about changing your breast pads.

  • I found that Apple Cider Vinegar on her pack/bottle each time has taken care of E's in about 3 days. Just in case someone is looking for a home remedie.

@Toller thanks!  We thought we had cleared the thrush, but today Ethan's is back and I had just started to try to nurse him this past weekend - so now I need to be retreated!  My mastitis is much better, but I'm worried that another round of thrush will complicate things.... all this to say - we decided today to move towards FF.  It has been too much to manage and has consumed me for too long now.  I'm in pain, exhausted and do nothing but feed children and pump... I already feel less stressed having made that decision.  How are you all doing?

  • @DiFazette I'm sorry things didn't go as planned- it's always hard to give up something you wanted so badly. EPing with twins is something else for sure. I'm only on day 4 and wowza. I'm glad you were able to come to a decision you can live with- that's most important! You tried your best and that's all anyone can do.

We are okay- twins are still in special care at the hospital for weight gain (after a few scary days for baby boy when they thought he had an infection- but it's finally confirmed all clear now).

I'm so tired!! My recovery was way more rough this time and Pumping.is.exhausting.
