MFM first visit what to expect

I see the MFM specialist for the first time on Monday. Wondering what to expect and what people's various experiences are? I'm being seen due to history of preterm birth (PROM) and sunchorionic bleed with this pregnancy.

  • I think it will depend what you're going in for.  Mine did an ultrasound with every visit; then in the 3rd trimester I also went in for weekly/bi-weekly nonstress tests.  The MFM also did my NT screening and anatomy scan.  Yours may also prescribe medication as needed.

  • My first visit with the MFM was mostly a consult and then we did an ultrasound. I was told when and what my next 2 ultrasounds would be for (in my case the anatomy scan at 18 weeks and echocardiogram at 22 weeks).  Since I'm seeing the MFM for an autoimmune disorder (lupus) we also talked a lot about how that affects my treatment.  DH and I were able to ask a lot of questions and it was just nice to sit down with someone so knowledgeable.  Then we did the ultrasound (my first ever external ultrasound!) and got both regular and 3D pictures to take home of our LO.  I was also told that all of my ultrasounds would be held at the MFM and that I would just get dopplers at my regular prenatal appointments from now on.

  • My first appointment was a consult and u/s.  I, like @Xath, had u/s every appointment as well as NSTs.  I was referrred until 2nd tri (DD2), and mine was for IUGR.
  • I had my first yesterday. I have hypothyroidism so they told me the progression of treatment and explained all the possible outcomes. Hearing the term "catastrophic" repeatedly will really dampen a day but she ended it positively and said she thinks everything will be perfect.
