Gifts for a preemie?

So sorta long story, but my stepmom's daughter-in-law is having her little girl at only 30 weeks. They've been monitoring her closely since she first got pregnant, first she didn't have enough fluid and then her little girl hasn't been growing. They didn't find out till she was 23 weeks along that she had blood clots in her placenta and cord, that's why she hasn't been developing. So they are gunna take her early at 30 weeks due to all these issues and so far she's only 1-2 pounds. My question is do you think it might scare her or offend her if I make her little preemie hats, boots or blanket? I have no idea how this all is making her feel, I can't imagine how hard this must be on her. But she's receiving no support from my stepmom, who doesn't think she's gunna make it so she has refused to go to ultrasounds or baby appointments with her. Just want her to know that I care

Re: Gifts for a preemie?

  • I don't have any premie experience personally, but I think that sounds touching.
I've heard from a few premie Mom's that a couple gift cards to restaurants/fast food near the hospital would be nice, too.

  • I think that's a really sweet and nice gesture. Blanket or hat like @ceclarlinetlo said. Maybe a gift for the mother as well, like a matching blanket for when she's over there for long periods of time just waiting.. Or matching bracelets? So she has something for when she isn't there at the hospital?

  • I used a lot of hats with my son, I found preemie hats hard to find, but a few family members found me some and it was a huge help.

  • Not a premie experience but when I had to come home without ds my sister in law got us a picture frame and printed a pic of my son to take home it was so sweet. I know a little harder because you have to get access to a baby picture. Also I loved having slippers at the hospital to walk to the nicu in so maybe that's a good gift for mom(hint they had a hard sole).
  • I agree with gas gift cards or restaurant gift cards. Maybe even dropping off some homemade meals? Our friends had a baby in the NICU and I remember they were always so tired at the end of the day that they neglected to feed themselves.
  • I second the restaurant and gas cards. It gets expensive traveling back and forth. When I worked NICU we had special swaddles, hats, etc that we used. A matching hat and blanket would be sweet, especially to look back on and remember how small the baby used to be.
  • Premie clothes are not something that people usually ever buy because you don't even plan on needing them, but as a parent you want to be able to dress your child in something when it is medically ok to do so. I think making or purchasing some premie outfits, even if she can't wear them until she gets 4 pounds or so, is a good idea. The hats that she could wear as soon as she is born would be great.
  • My son was a 3 lb preemie and I didn't realize then but the sleepers with snaps are very helpful so they can be dressed and the wires can still be connected.  So if you do get clothes those are usually better for NICU.  Most of the time my kid had clothes off just because he was messed with so much due to medical problems.
