Braxton hicks every night

I'm 32 weeks & I've been having Braxton hicks every night for about the past 2 weeks. Sometimes really painful but tolerable just annoying. Has this been happening to anyone else?

Re: Braxton hicks every night

  • I'm 33 weeks and have been complaining of Braxton Hicks to my OB since 28 weeks. She is always unimpressed. She always tells me to not worry unless they become frequent, painful and I have changes in discharge. I'm on my feet a lot at work and she encourages a lot of water and rest in the evenings.

  • ive had them since at least 16 weeks. granted, i had cervical changes, so maybe not the best comparison. they're typically worse at night, sometimes bad before breakfast as well. mine can be frequent, like over 8 per hour. they can be painful or uncomfortable, sometimes with back pain. they have always eventually let up and never progressed. the only concern would be causing membranes to rupture because my cervix is gone/ funneled. but even those with an "irritable uterus" have a very similar rate of making it to term vs those without.

You get them all day long you just might not notice them. I have around 4 an hour. They get stronger as you get toward the end of pregnancy. Your body is practicing for labor. You wouldn't be expected to run a marathon if you never practiced running would you! ;)
  • Absolutely. At night they are the worst. It's pretty miserable.
  • I don't really know if i have them or if baby is positioning himself weird. Im just about 35weeks (on Wednesday)...i never ever feel pain but at night i feel what i would say is a tightening at the very top. Comes and goes sometimes lasting up to a minute or two and is never painful. My belly gets hard too. I'm a FTM so i don't know what it is. I would think at almost 35 weeks i should be getting them.
  • Drinking water really used to help me and breathing through it
  • I get them day and night. I've found changing position, walking around if I'm sitting or sitting if I'm walking, drinking water and going the bathroom (apparently a full bladder can trigger them) helps.

Yes!  I get them all the time if I don't pee enough and my bladder is full.

Yea?i thought so too but wasnt sure. I expected it to be painful but it's just annoying. Thanks!
  • Even on procardia to prevent me progressing, I'm having BH (or maybe real contractions I guess) every night since my L&D trip. Last night they were about every 8 minutes for a couple of hours. It's like DH and I are on standby for if/when to call the doc. This is for the birds!
  • Since I was about 25 weeks I have been having issues with the daily BH contractions.  I get them during my commute home which consist of a 2 block walk to the Path train (NJ's subway) which I take to Newark.  In Newark I stand around waiting for the NJ transit train for 15ish minutes typically and am using having painful contractions the entire time.  When I talked to my dr about it she said to hydrate (because that's the answer to all pregnancy issues apparently) and to take it easy.  I was still trying to walk like a normal person trying to catch my train.  I have since started carrying a smaller bag and not fully filling my water bottle before leaving the office.  I also tend to leave work 10-15 minutes early so I have time to run to the bathroom and waddle slowly to the Path.  I still have BH but they are not as painful when I am not pushing my body.  Either way I was always able to get them to stop within 20 minutes of being home.  Sometimes relaxing and hydrating really do help- but I am really excited for the daily commute to the office to end in 2 weeks.

  • I don't even notice my BH. I went to L&D last night for high blood pressure , and they said I was having contractions every 7 to 10 min. I told them I can sometimes feel tightening at the top of my tummy, but nothing painful.

Luckily everything is good, and they let me go home. Hopefully it stays that way!

    33+4 today
  • Just yesterday I really started noticing much more BH throughout the day.  I haven't tried to count them yet.  I think I am going to start now though.  Sometimes I really can't tell that's what it is until I stand up from a seated position though.
  • @LoneStar21416 I had at least 6 BH yesterday. Previously, I've only had what I thought could maybe be one about once a week. Are you starting to count because you think they are coming closer together?

  • @cjs260 yes, I feel like I'm having a lot now that are closer together, but not necessarily in any pattern. I had my NST this morning and I had at least one, and potentially two, while on the monitor for 20 minutes. Neither were painful, just very tight and a little uncomfortable. I could see my stomach take a different shape too. After we were finished I was going to ask the nurse right away if it picked up a contraction, and before I could ask she said, "did you feel that contraction you had 6 minutes ago?"  So now at least I know what I'm experiencing is what I think it is! She said it's not alarming, given that I'm halfway through week 35, but just to take note if it starts to get painful at all or if a true pattern develops. And the doctor always has to review the strips too and she had no problem with it. Most important part was baby was fine during the contraction and got the accellerations they were looking for. I'll start taking note now, but not going to drive myself crazy until I feel something that's more painful I think...
  • Okay, this might be a dumb question, but should I be concerned if I'm having some painful contractions here and there?

A few days ago, I had some back pain which I figured was just that... back pain, but after paying attention, I realized the back pain stayed and every now and then, it wrapped around to my front and felt like a BH in my lower abdomen. I then had a few more yesterday. No pattern, baby is moving totally fine, and I feel "great" (as good as I can approaching 36 weeks). I figured I'd mention it at my appt. next week, but I figure it's my body just prepping. I'm actually mostly just concerned about back labor since that appears to be where I feel the contractions the most and I hear that is particularly painful and my hope is to do a med-free labor.
  • @newyearsbaby5 I told my OB I was having a few painful contractions and he didn't seem to care too much. He said to watch for discharge, decreased fetal movement, or any timed patterns. Otherwise it's typically the small changes starting to take place in your cervix. I would still mention it to your doctor at your next appointment though.
  • @christac1010 have you been having pelvic pain? I can't remember. Mine is getting so, so bad. Getting out of bed or the car is like torture. Or standing up after sitting for too long. It hurts when I walk, but almost think it feels better sometimes with more activity than from walking after sitting for a while.
  • @newyearsbaby5 we attended our first childbirth class last night and the instructor mentioned that you should primarily be concerned only once contractions don't subside no matter what you do. So if you drink a bunch of water, move around, change positions, etc. and they still keep coming, that's when you should call your OB. I was surprised to learn that contractions caused by dehydration are still legitimate and indicate cervical changes that could spur early labor, so my most important takeaway was that you should start by drinking at least 32oz of water. Apparently that's the necessary amount to cure dehydration and should stop them in their tracks. Sorry if this is repeat info!

  • @LoneStar21416 Yes! My hips ache so bad. I talked to the OB about it yesterday and he said I might find it helpful to be more active now that we've cleared 34 weeks. I was already up more though because sitting/laying down hurts so much after a few hours. He also said the pain probably won't go away because LO's head is so low at this point. So that sucks but it's good news at the same time.
  • Totally feel you on that. I'll be so happy when we both make it to 36 weeks, and maybe even longer! @lastmango and @Litzi too! Just need to find some better way to cope with this pelvic pain in the meantime. It really started to be a lot more noticeable probably about a week ago, and is just getting progressively worse. Like you said, I think it's just weight of baby, baby being lower, and head down -- not flip flopping around all transverse anymore! And everything stretching out for labor. I guess I can take it as a good thing too. Baby has to come out somehow lol
