My LO was at his great grandparents who told us they were just at the home of another LO....who had hand foot mouth while they were there. The LO just had spots(they thought chicken pox) around his mouth the day of there visit. On the day of our visit with great grandparents the other LO was being hospitalized for dehydration and was covered in awful blisters! Poor baby! Four days between them seeing the LO and my LO. My LO is just over Roseola(it was awful). I'm praying we don't get it. Is it THAT contagious that my LO could get it from his great grandparents four days after they visited the LO with the beginning stages of hand foot mouth????

Eta: what are the first signs of hand foot mouth?? Fever?  Chickenpox looking marks?? His rash from Roseola is just clearing up. You can hardly see it on his tummy.

  • Months ago our son was exposed first hand.  I was at my best friend's home, and her son had it (she had no idea at the time).  The next day her son was really starting to show signs, bumps in his mouth, not wanting to eat, cranky, fever, etc.  She took him in to the doctor, and she confirmed it was HFM.  The boys shared toys, and were in very close contact.  Somehow our son did not get it, I was AMAZED.  He did end up with some sort of stomach bug that week, so we took him into the doctor, and he told us to watch for the symptoms and it could take anywhere from like 5-10+ days for symptoms to show.  We were lucky though!!  Hope your little guy is too!

  • I'm so nervous because this morning LO was being so crabby and crying all morning. He's never like that! The visit was yesterday. Hope we see as lucky as you!
  • My LO had it (at least we think) and she had a really bad diaper rash and bumps all over her lower legs.  She never really got any in her mouth, on her feet or hands.  However, I caught it from her and was miserable.  I started with a sore throat, that I thought was strep, then my hands and feet started itching and blisters began to form once my throar had kind of quit hurting.  I couldn't walk because it was so uncomfortable.  I'm still dealing with it 2 months after I had it.  I currently have 4 fingernails peeling off.

I so hope you or your little one aren't affected!!

Oh my gosh. I'm so sorry!!!

I know nothing about it all, but I looked it up and they seem to only show worse case scenario pics online. So awful. I'm just trying to see how it starts and what it looks like. Thank you for commenting.
  • My little guy got this on his birthday weekend. First he started one day with a fever and vomiting and then day two he still felt terrible with a fever but no vomiting. By day three the rash broke out in his face and legs. Then it was all over his hands and feet! I've read different things about contagion, some say as soon as the fever breaks they are no longer contagious. Some children get the virus but show no symptoms. I hope you don't have to go through it! Good luck!
  • We have had it twice. The first time it was blisters all over his chin and around his mouth, a little on his arms and legs. Never on the palms of his hand or sole of this feet like it's "suppose" to be. Started with a fever and next morning the rash. It was like 3-4 days of hell. Lots of fluids, we had to use a syringe to keep him taking them. The 2nd time it was mostly a fever and like 3-4 little bumps. Good luck momma! Crossing my fingers he doesn't get it.
  • My LO had it two weeks ago. She got a super high fever, like 103 and she had horrible breath. She got the blisters inside her mouth. It was about a week before she was back to herself. since it's a virus all we could do was give her Motrin and cool baths. The fever is what scared me the most!
  • We dealt with it in August. Lo was playing with a kid who had it a couple weeks before but was apparently still contagious! There was a third kid they were with who didn't get it, so maybe you will get lucky. For us, it started with a fever and a few spots on his chest. Then the spots spread to his elbows and legs, and eventually his feet. His feet were the worst, the spots turned into blisters and looked terrible. The last of the marks are finally starting to fade. 3 toenails peeled off. After a couple days I had diagnosed it as HFM, but went to the Dr because he still had a fever even with Tylenol in his system. Dr confirmed HFM and said we just had to wait it out. Lo didn't seem too bothered by the rash or blisters, luckily. We avoided other kids for a couple weeks because there is no way to tell if you are still contagious.
  • Update: we were able to avoid this, thank goodness. Thank you everyone for helping!
