Zika Virus Concern

Re: Zika Virus Concern

  • Definitely discuss with your OB. My OB advised no travel to any Zika areas. I have no travel planned so its not a big deal for me and I don't know where Bahamas falls on list.

  • I had to cancel a trip to Ft Lauderdale and one to Turks & Caicos. OB told me not to do either

  • I'm sorry but I would cancel the trip, it's way too risky, my reproductive endocrinologist and OB both said to avoid Zika areas; we cancelled our Mexico trip because of this and have to think of non Zika areas for the baby moon
  • I have a trip planned to Florida in march and my husband and I made our decision based on our own feelings. But the Bahamas is different than Florida. The other thing to think about is if your husband is infected he could possibly spread this to you.

My OB has warned against traveling to Zika areas.  We have a Disney trip planned in April.  Currently Orlando is safe, because the FL Zika cases have been concentrated to Miami, but if it starts to travel northward I will have to cancel my trip and DH will have to handle Disney with 2 boys solo (well, solo plus his entire family - we aren't going to penalize the other kids if I can't go).

I would personally avoid Zika affected areas. But realistically, there are pregnant people living in, for instance, Miami, who are taking reasonable precautions and going to be fine. I actually have a pregnant friend who is in Miami right now to visit her family.

I think on a cruise ship you should be ok. But talk to your doctor and do your research before choosing an excursion. And bring repellant with you.
  • No way would I go, especially since it specifically says to avoid the bahamas.

Here is why I cancelled my December trip to Cabo San Lucas. If I decided to go, I would have to wear pants and long sleeves treated with permethrin, and spray myself with DEET. That didn't sound like a fun beach vacation.

I am getting a refund on my plane tickets and hotel room with a letter from my doctor.

Edited to add: Plus, if I did get bit even once it would add a huge amount of mental stress and likely medical costs.
  • Zika is terrifying largely because there is still so much unknown as it can be passed on even if you are asymptomatic. We got pregnant shortly after a trip to Turks and Caicos and that has been a big point of discussion that I've had with my Doctor. Since little bean has come into the picture, I've had blood work done to test for it but in Ontario, there are so few labs that test for it, that it takes a month for the results to come back. If you haven't already been exposed, I say better safe than sorry and avoid that risk if you can. Of course, it all depends on your comfort level and I'd certainly suggest chatting with your doc.
  • I definitely wouldn't go, to me there is no trip worth the risk.  H and I like to do a tropical vacation every year but skipped last year because we were planing on TTC soon and will skip this year obviously.  Also it's important to remember that Zika can be sexually transmitted so if you decide to go your H has to take all the same precautions you do.
  • No way. mosquitoes freakin' love me there is no way I'm going anywhere where there's an elevated risk. I'm in LA but thankful it's starting to get cold enough here that mosquitos aren't an issue anymore and won't be for a while.
  • I agree with all other posters - I would cancel. Just not worth the risk. DH and I were supposed to go to Disney with two other couples in January and ended up backing out when we started TTC. At the very lease you should talk to you OB (you can call and discuss before your appointment if you don't want to wait)

  • I agree with the others, I would cancel too. It's just totally not worth the risk. Zika scares the heck out of me. I am concerened about it here in Virginia where I live even though I know logically there have been no reports of mosquito transmitted Zika, I'm still terrified of it!
  • I'd pack lots of bug spray. But I've lived in Louisiana my whole life so it wouldn't bother me.

  • Personally, I wouldn't go, but I always tend to air on the side of caution, especially since getting pregnant. If you have to make a decision about the trip before you see your OB, I would give them a call and get them to let you talk to the doctor about it. Only you, your Dh, and your doctor can make the best decision for you.

  • You can call your OB but they are going to tell you not to go. there  would be a huge liability for them if they ignored CdC reccomendations and said you could go.
Based on the information we have now  there really shouldn't be a risk once the neural tube is closed by the end of the first tri. However, we only have 1.5 to 2 years worth if research on this strain of the virus (which could very likely mutate) so you have to decide how much risk you are willing to take  on.
  • @supermom83 I'm in Virginia too- Arlington to be exact! And we had our yard sprayed multiple times throughout the summer for mosquitos but it still concerns me! Are you in Northern VA?
Yep, I live in Northern VA! Right outside the beltway in Fairfax. And I think we may spray our yard for mosquitos this summer! Did you find it was effective?
  • Our town in Massachusetts sprays for mosquitos (not that I'm worried about Zika here). There's a time period in which we are allowed to call and the town will spray our yard for "free". Might be worth seeing if it's a service your town offers.

  • I actually went to Brazil in the summer. We had won a free all expenses paid trip to the Olympics. It was definitely worth the risk. But we were supposed to wait 6 months before trying and I forgot. We have blood tests for it. I believe we are safe because it was technically winter down there and it was the middle of a city. We did not have any bites or symptoms.

  • @plumpous wow that trip sounds amazing!!! Going to the Olympics when it is held somewhere cool is on my bucket list.

  • @oheliza44 I never dreamed of it in my wildest dreams. I just hope our blood tests are clear.

  • @plumpous first of all, am jealous about the whole all expenses paid trip to Brazil for the Olympics - like how does that even happen in real life!?!?

Secondly, it was a low risk time since it was winter as you said - so am hoping they give you the all clear soon!  When will you hear back?  Keep us posted!  My midwife (CNM in a hospital that works closely with team of OBs) says there is only one testing center in the whole state and that it would take an incredibly long time to get the test done even if we needed to have it done.
  • @caribbeanmama it was a contest at my husband's company. It's a global hi-tech firm and they flew 30 couples. I've never won anything like this! It was surreal. I actually haven't gone to the lab yet. Probably tomorrow I'll do it.
