Re: Symptoms Thread 11/16

  • Is there such thing as pregnancy back spasms? Swear my back is seriously killing me. Spoke to advise nurse, said to take Tylenol and rest. I have a follow up Dr. Appointment tomorrow. BTW, Never experienced this with baby #1.

  • @beemaya83 I don't know, personally.  But I've noticed if I overdo things at work or do any lifting hardly at all I have lower back pain for hours after. Not spasms though. Hope you feel better soon.
  • Back spasms sound awful. I hope you get some relief.

  • Today I experienced shortness of breath and heart pounding after eating breakfast. Granted it was a bit sugary: cereal and milk with decaf tea with a bit of sugar added. From what I've googled (which was probably a bad idea) it's pretty normal and I should be careful about the size of my meals and their sugar content. Has anyone else experienced this? Could it be blood sugar or perhaps increased blood pressure with the added effect of my body rushing to metabolize a sweet breakfast after almost 12 hours of no food?
  • @HGRich A month or so ago I had what I *think* were heart palpitations (could maybe be described as heart pounding sensation).  It lasted for no longer than 10 seconds and I was just sitting at my desk, low physical activity level.  I asked my OB about it and she said it's normal, it can be caused by a ton of things including your body adjusting to the new blood volume level, higher levels of caffeine than normal, or coming off medications (she thinks this was probably the culprit for me as I was getting over a sinus infection).  I had not heard about the sugar content of meals, but that could be true as well.  Anyway, from what I was told as long as it doesn't happen frequently and/or with other symptoms, it's not a cause for concern.

  • I have definitely been getting more out of breath lately.  I always take the stairs at work and now I'm huffing and puffing more than usual.

  • @HGRich Sounds like heart palpitations. I had them a TON with DD. I asked my OB about it because it was starting to really freak me out. She said it is most likely just because of extra blood volume in the body. It is pretty common. I had an appointment set up with a cardiologist because I was having them one on top of the next for an hour one day. Didn't follow through with the appointment because I guess I got used to it and didn't freak out any more. But, I did have at least 5 or 6 palpitation episodes per day for the 2nd half of pregnancy. I have already had a few with this baby as well.

  • Thanks ladies. It was scary for about ten minutes and then tolerable for another 15 or so. I'll make sure to call my ob if I feel I need to but I guess it sounds fairly common. @mrsstuessy that sounds exactly like it.
  • Nightly heartburn has started.  Seems early. Anyone else?  The only thing that used to help was drinking a tsp of baking soda in water, which was terrible.

  • My boobs have been KILLING me lately and today they started leaking clear liquid which I'm guessing is colostrum? Thought this happened much later than 20 weeks, guess I was wrong! Anyone else have this happen? Also starting to having trouble sleeping - think I'm going to have to start experimenting with pregnancy pillows.

  • @kitkat8387 I started leaking colostrum last week too.
  • @HGRich good to know I'm not the only one!

  • 20 weeks and my hip pain is already so awful. It's making me have such a rough night sleep. And the out of breath thing is absurd! I'll be sitting down doing nothing sometimes and I'll just be out of breath. I starting to feel pregnant, and by that I mean things that were normal to do already seem challenging. I went to just bend over to pick something up and oufff it was a lot more uncomfortable then I was expecting.

  • @mama5181 - I have been going to my chiropractor every couple weeks to keep on top of the hip pain this time and it has worked wonders! I highly suggest giving it a try! :)
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • @mama5181 I know exactly what you mean! And didn't expect it to start for a while yet...but could barely reach to out my socks on yesterday
  • @mylittleirvz I have been going every 3 weeks but I'll probably bump it up to every 2 after the new year.

@Ekzerr I cried tonight because I couldn't easily crawl into our bed which is already to tall for me. It was pathetic.

  • So. Anyone usually a once-a-dayer who is now a multiple times a dayer? I don't think I'm eating enough to go to the bathroom more than once, but low and behold.  And my lady area feels so sensitive, I can't push without pain (so I don't). Ack! Pregnancy is beautiful <3

  • Heart burn is slowing creeping up at 20wks. Boobs are starting to feel a little sore and leak just a tiny bit at night when I lay on my side. This is also my 3rd child.
  • @NurseLaLa, I've been having this too the last week or so. No constipation here! I was always very regular but now I'm going multiple times a day too. Sorry if TMI.

  • So I thought I would feel 100% better after my anatomy scan but now I am finding new symptoms to freak out about. Yay. I have been (TMI warning) getting a lot of wet discharge for the past few weeks and was concerned I was leaking amniotic fluid (thanks google), but my fluid levels looked good at the anatomy scan so I calmed down about that. My doctor said if there was an issue, my fluid levels would be low. But then last night I started getting mucus-y discharge again - and it had a slight yellow tinge to it, whereas it has just been white up to this point - so I googled (big mistake) and now I am panicking that it's my mucus plug. Accompanied with abdominal cramping/pressure I am really worried. I am going to try and get in to see my doctor today - she will probably think I am crazy if she doesn't already.....but I would rather be safe than sorry at this point. Pregnancy is so stressful :(:(

  • Update, went to doctor and she tested for a bacterial infection and everything came back negative. She also did an internal exam and my cervix looks normal/closed, so it's not preterm labor. She also listened to baby and he sounds great. So I guess I am just having more RLP/growing pains this week than I have before. I have also been feeling way more movement the past couple days, so maybe things are just growing rapidly. It's so frustrating how similar "normal pregnancy symptoms" and "scary things" are, especially as a FTM, it's so hard to tell the difference.

  • Who has the magical solution for backaches?

  • I'd like the magical solution for heartburn too please...
  • I also echo the heartburn solution. It has really flared up the last couple days
    Babysizer Cravings Pregnancy Tracker
  • No solutions here but I echo both. Goodness.
  • Heartburn help: mix a teaspoon of baking soda in water and chug.  It's gross but instant relief.

I've only had heartburn a few times this go round, but I have a magnesium powder called Nature Calm or something similar (at Whole Foods, not terribly expensive) and that worked really well too.

    Heartburn is the worst. :(

  • Are hot flashes a normal symptom for this time of pregnancy?  I kept waking up in the middle of the night sweating.  Then this morning I would randomly just feel really hot.

  • Is anyone else experiencing this weird sensation where you can feel/hear your heart beat in your ear? I've googled it and it's strangely normal during pregnancy, but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or solutions...it's driving me crazy!
    Me: 34

  • Well I guess my horrible backache and "hot flashes" were because I have a low grade fever.  (100.9) Which I guess makes sense because I also started feeling like I had a chest cold coming on yesterday.   I took some Tylenol but it hasn't gone down.  I called my doctor and they just told me to take tylenol and didn't seem concerned.  Anyone else deal with a  fever during this or another pregnancy?  Should I freak out?

  • @momtoleo I am! Just a little. I've heard it's common too. I'm also having congestion that pops in and out of my right ear so when they happen at the same time it feels like the right side of my head is going to explode. Haha.

@aboxofchocolates I'm sorry you're sick! I keep worrying about what to do if I get a fever too. But I imagine if your doctor isnt concerned I'm sure you're fine....
  • @kitkat8387 I remember reading somewhere with my last pregnancy that your "mucus plug" actually will reginerate multiple times during pregnancy. So it's possible to lose it but not go into preterm labor. It's only at the end when you are dialated and effaced that it can cause your water to break, etc...

plus if you have a cold or allergies you can have mucus discharge down there that normally you wouldn't consider a problem if you weren't pregnant.

  • Has anyone experienced what I can only describe as a tingling brain/head?  It usually lasts ~30 seconds, but it feels much like it does when a hand or foot goes to sleep, only scarier because well...it's my head.  Perhaps on a similar note, I've had my left arm go numb/tingly while doing nothing other than sitting on the couch (not lying on or using that arm).
  • @thecavfamily no, not tingling exactly. Dizziness though for sure. Maybe it simply has to do with change in blood pressure?
  • I get the tingly feeling  around my head/scalp area and it really freaked me out! This was pre pregnancy. My chiropractor thinks it was from my stiff neck.. Lack of blood flow to my head. monthly adjustments and massage helps!
  • @HGRich & @SDSwenson I'm certain your explanations are far more plausible than what I gleaned from Dr.Google - - brain tumor or early signs of MS.  :/
  • @thecavfamily I talked to my doctor yesterday about moments of dizziness and shortness of breath I've had and he basically said that there's so much extra blood our hearts are having to pump now that sometimes it takes longer to get to heads and extremities. Especially if we've just stood up or moved a certain way or laid a certain way. I'm sure the head tingling is related to blood pressure OR could even be a sign of a migraine that hasn't blown up to an actual headache. Or as @SDSwenson said, alignment. We're not doctors, of course. But I wouldn't be surprised if yours said something similar to mine.
  • Oh believe me @thecavfamily I was convinced for like a solid week that I had MS.
  • @HGRich & @SDSwenson I'm certain your explanations are far more plausible than what I gleaned from Dr.Google - - brain tumor or early signs of MS.  :/
I've been tested twice for MS in my life because of random nerve pain and tingling I get throughout my body.  We have never pinpointed a trigger or cause.  But yes, it's a scary as hell thing to google....

I'm sure with pregnancy it has to do with blood flow.  TMI - whenever I get my period, my feet fall asleep more often and I'm sure it's related.  I'd bring it up to your OB but I doubt it's a problem at all.

  • Not a pregnancy symptom but I'm battling this horrible chest cold and I'm up at 4 am because I can't sleep with my constant coughing.  I can't call my doctor right now and I was wondering if anyone knows certain cough medicines that are ok to take during pregnancy.  I was thinking tylenol cold but wasn't sure if that was alright.  I know regular tylenol is ok and I can't have anything with pseudoephed, I would need to get that from behind the counter anyways.  Or if cough drops are alright?  Thanks ladies!

  • I had a cold a few weeks ago and my OB approved of any over the counter medicine that was not ibuprofen based. So Tylenol Cold would be fine. I took DayQuil/NyQuil.
