Infertility

Fun with IF

Hey all,

I thought it might be fun to have a little thread where we can post our funniest (or most embarrassing) IF moments. I know this is a hard time for a lot of us, but it always helps me to have a little humor.

So, what awkward convos have you had to have?
Weird places you've had to do an injection?
Mishaps and mixups?

I think for me, my most awkward moment was during my last transfer, and the doctor asked me if he was the one to do my HSG. He asked this while he was inserting the catheter, so, keeping in fashion of making awkward jokes when I'm nervous I blurted out "Why? Does it look familiar down there?"

*facepalm*

At least he got a laugh out of it.

Let's hear yours!

Re: Fun with IF

  • Great thread idea! So here's a recent one of mine. My DH is still getting used to giving me IM injections. He did pretty good the first couple of times, but by the time he had to do it for the 3rd time, he got really nervous for some reason. So I'm standing there leaning over a table and I'm like, it's ok, you can do it, and I'm just waiting, and I wait like 30 seconds and he still hasn't done it, so for some reason I start laughing, like uncontrollable full body shaking laughter right as he sticks me and he's like telling me to hold still but I can't stop laughing for some reason. Luckily it all went fine. :)

  • @jamieh2000 ouch! Thinking about injecting with the bigger needle makes me cringe! Lol about if you had gotten pulled over "sorry officer, we need to deliver my husbands semen so can you let us go?"

I made my dh DH take pics of the "spank bank room " Bc I was super curious.
  • Haha @mtpbadger that is awesome. My DH did say there was quite a variety of materials in there. I guess they need all tastes since some are same sex couples probably!

  • Haha @mtpbadger my DH has visited three different facilities and each one is different in how they set up the room. That has probably been one of the most awkward waiting room experiences when we went to a urologist and they have everyone come in for samples at the same time then the Dr visits with each couple afterwards. So you can look across the room and know what that guy is gearing up to go do. There was even one couple that went together.

  • @JamieH2000 Oh my GAWD. I cannot imagine using the mixing needle for the oil!! The injection needle is bad enough!! You poor thing!!

The first time I did progesterone suppositories I didn't put it in far enough nor did I remember to put on a panty liner. I went about my day and was standing in line at the grocery store, reaching over the belt to grab a divider when I felt a massive "rushing" feeling. It had finally dissolved and came out all over the place. I waddled to my car and I'm pretty sure if anyone saw me they might have thought I pooped my pants lol.
  • These are awesome! @Monica54321 I was waiting for someone to say they did an injection in a vehicle. It almost came to that for me last night, but I was able to reschedule my commitment so I could do the shots at home.

@mtpbadger I might have to have my husband take pics of the "room" tomorrow. I am curious too!

  • No funny injection stories. But poor DH had already had 2 SA's when we started seeing the RE and both he did at home and brought to a lab. Well the RE wanted one done in his lab in his office. So the "special room" is right next to the lab and on the main hallway in the office. It took him a while and I was worried. He said he couldn't stay focused b/c he could hear all the people laughing and talking in the lab and in the hallway!! It's also near a small waiting room which is usually empty but of course that day people were in there and people gave him understanding smiles and head nods when he came out b/c they knew what that room was! He was soooo embarrassed!

    TTC for 8 years.
Started in 2008 with timed intercourse, ovulation testing, no official monitoring.
OB-GYN recommended Clomid and timed intercourse, attempted for 6 straight months.
First surgery June 2009 (OB-GYN): diagnosed with stage 4 endometriosis and large hydrosalpinx on right tube.
Second surgery (July 2009, RE performed this): Right tube had to be removed, lots of adhesions removed.
Attempted "trying on our own" as per RE recommendations, unsuccessful 5-6 months.
HSG performed December 2009: left tube open.
February 2010: started Femara and timed intercourse, attempted 6 months, no BFPs.
Took a break for a while.
January 2011: started IUI process, ovaries never properly responded to medications, 6 failed attempts, never actually completed an IUI.
Took 2012-2014 off due to depression and frustration (side note: did complete grad school to become a nurse practitioner- great distraction).
2015: started seeing RE again, went through tons of testing and HSG, left tube now blocked, only option is IVF.
September 2015: Started first official IVF cycle, cancelled in October due to large cyst on left ovary.
October 2015: started on birth control for 2 months.
December 2015: attempted to start another IVF cycle, cysts on both ovaries on initial ultrasound, left was huge, cancelled to aspirated cyst.
January 2016: Cyst back, surgery for ex-lap, cyst and adhesions removed.
March 2016: Attempted second IVF cycle, estrogen way too high, cyst back, cancelled again.
April 2016: Third attempted IVF cycle, 7 eggs retrieved, 2 mature (but not great) embryos made to fresh transfer, neither implanted.
May-Sept 2016: Break to regain sanity.
Sept-Oct 2016: Attempted fourth IVF cycle, very successful, cyst still on left but we ignored. 7 mature "great looking" eggs retrieved, 4 mature embryos made it to day 5 transfer. Transfer aborted due to large amount of endometriosis fluid in uterus.
FET of 2 embryos completed on 12/12/16.
    12/22/16 1st Beta 179 BFP!!!
    12/24/16 2nd Beta 449!!
    EDD 8/30/17 with two girls!!!!!

    Audrey (4lb 8oz) and Olivia (6lb 6oz) born 8/10/17!!

  • these are hilarious, I definitely needed this today - thanks all!

I used the mixing needle for the Menopur injection.. ouch and had to do my shots in the bathroom at work one time - talk about feeling like a junkie.

My DH had to do an extraction (prior vasectomy) and we ended up in the ER that night ,stiches had come undone and his ballas were the size of oranges.

Not sure if these are funny though.. more tragic than anything, but its nice to share stories and now that we are all not so perfect together :)

IVF#1 Sep 2016 (4 eggs retrieved, 2 matured, 0 transferred due to DNA breakdown)
IVF#2 Nov 2016:  Estrogen &  Ganirelix.   Stimming: Loprun, Follistim, Menopur. (7 eggs retrieved. 3 matured. 0 transferred due to PGD results)

IVF#3 Feb 2017: Estrogen priming. Menopur, Follistim and HGH

  • I am literally LOLing about the turkey baster comments! Sounds like something me and my DH would do!

When i was on estrace vaginally 3/day I had to do one in the public bathroom at work in the afternoon. One day I dropped the pill (thankfully I had extras) but can only imagine what the person next to me thought I was doing as they saw this little blue pill roll under the stall. Probably thought I was getting high on some drug lol!
  • @bluejeanbabi05 O.M.G how awful! Your doctor needs to stop describing it as a string! LOL! I'm glad you are able to laugh about it now and what a story!
  • OK I'm dying laughing/cringing at these stories - thank you @LeFemmeViolette for starting this thread!  Totally needed this today.  And I'm sorry but @natalie4oscar your urologist needs to accept the jokes - what did he expect choosing that field for a career with his name!!!

Only one I have is one of my first days of stims for my IVF cycle I had to do my shots in the bathroom of a crowded restaurant at a friend's bday dinner.  I was still new at it so had to pull up the video tutorials and follow along so it took me forever to get both shots set up and done.  It was a single co-ed restroom too so there were like 10 people waiting on line when I came out, everyone def thought I was in there dropping a big one if ya know what I mean!

  • Thank you ladies for sharing all your funny stories. I'm blanking right now, but if I think of one I'll be sure to share. ;)
