Bill for Progenity genetic testing

I just got word that my insurance did not cover my genetic testing. I am hoping to fight it but in the meantime, I am worried about a BIG bill! Anyone else in this boat?

Re: Bill for Progenity genetic testing

  • They usually have a cap of what they'll charge you if your insurance declines. However, why did you have the genetic testing done? If it was because of your age and/or family history, your doctor (or whoever bills for that test) may fight it. That happened to me last year and my insurance company ended up paying it.

  • The doctor did a genetic screen for CF with my first round of blood work. I ended up with a lovely bill for $750. Good luck!

  • My insurance denied my panorama test just like I expected. My dr said that the most they charge their office without insurance covering it is around $200. Still waiting on the bill though... good thing I have money in savings in case they were wrong!

  • @DrillSergeantCat I had an abnormal ultrasound and also have a family history of Fragile X Syndrome. The abnormal ultrasound was not indicated to Progenity and therefore my insurance also is not aware. I am going to have my doctor send those reports and hopefully that will change things.

    @chrlyr ouch!!
  • @jazzyma14 I would think that's enough for your insurance to cover it. Good luck!

  • Definitely don't pay it and have them tell your insurance about the reasons it was ordered - we had a cffdna test ordered too after abnormal AS results, and when he ordered it the doctor told us our insurance will cover it but not to be surprised if we get a huge bill before they do.

  • I had harmony done. My OB doesn't bill it to insurance unless it's indicated because if they don't cover it the cost is much higher than if they just bill you directly. I think it was $130 OOP, whereas if they billed insurance and it wasn't covered it would have been around $700.
  • We had genetic screeneing done too and our insureance wouldn't cover it but the company who does the testing had a max out of pocket at like $50-$100 dollar. Don't remember the exact amount but he initial bill was hundreds. We called the # on the bill and they reissued a new one for way less.
  • Call and tell them insurance will not cover it and ask what the cash ormoit
    of pocket cost is.  Many times it is significantly cheaper.  You could also ask to make payments.  Many times they will take whatever you can pay right then $200 and will write off the rest.  They figure some money is better than non.  My husband had cancer and we had to deal with this quite a bit.
  • Glad I'm not alone on this. We're in a back and forth with Blue Cross Blue Shield at the moment. Anxiously waiting for what's next.
  • We received a very large bill as well, and it wasn't even the genetic testing.  Sigh.
  • I don't know yet if my insurance has covered it, but my provider said if insurance will not cover, it is only $99 at their office. So hopefully there is a similar cap for you! GL!

  • We also got the Progenity testing done.  I only decided to get it done because my doctors office told me they would not charge more than $100 out of pocket if insurance would not pay for it.  I then received an EOB in the mail with how much I may be billed by the company, which was thousands of dollars.  I called my doctors office back and told them.  They said this was common, Progenity will bill insurance to see how much money they can get out of them, then send you a bill for the rest.  She then said you have to call the number on the bill once you receive it, ask for the prompt pay discount, and they will only charge you a minimal amount.  Weird way of doing things that scares people for sure, but all should hopefully be ok!  I am still waiting to receive my bill from them.
