Pregnancy carpal tunnel anyone?

So I have been experiencing wrist pain since my first month of pregnancy and I finally said something to my midwife today because my mobility in my wrist/thumb is diminishing.  She thinks it is probably carpal tunnel and I have been referred to physical therapy.  From the sounds of it it doesn't go away until baby is out :(

Has anyone dealt with this before? How did you deal with it?

Re: Pregnancy carpal tunnel anyone?

  • I had it with my first pregnancy. It didn't start until 3rd tri and lasted a month post partum. I didn't do anything for it. Just suffered through it.

I also had it... it began in my second tri and lasted a month post partum. My doc had me wear a brace (the cheap kind you get from the pharmacy). It helped.

  • I have bad feet (planter fasciitis). I'm 19 wks and two weeks ago my ankles started to act up. Sometimes in the middle of the night, my ankles will hurt. It's so strange; I don't know how to even explain it!! I went to the podiatrist and he told me to wear my orthotics and that the pregnancy and extra weight are prob attributing to my prob. He said if I still feel it after the pregnancy to go visit him again.

Guess me and the baby are toughing it out.

  • I just asked my OB today if my hands/arms going numb/tingling was normal.  It is starting to happen often, especially in my right hand.  He also told me it is carpal tunnel and wouldn't go away until after the baby. If anything it will probably get worse and suggested a wrist brace if it bothers me too much.  Apparently it's normal, but it still stinks!

  • Had it my whole pregnancy with DD. Stopped shortly after she was born. Started up in the last few weeks with this one. Not looking forward to 5 more months of it.

  • Hi there! Had it with my first pregnancy and it started in the third trimester. For most, it may take several months post partum to go away. Unfortunately for me, it never went away. I ended up getting a cortisone shot in my wrist which alleviated the pain. So with my second pregnancy now, my right arm and hand is almost always numb at night. Totally sucks! I plan on getting surgery once the kids are a bit older.

I do recommend getting a hand brace. You can find at any drugstore.

  • ended up not being carpal tunnel but tendinitis.  I'm in therapy 2x a week, a brace is not recommended because I need to keep up my mobility and braces tend to hinder that.  Oh the joys!
