Progesterone shots..

hey guys.. I have posted in a while.. I have hyperemessis (spell check)... so I've been very sick. My question is have any of you ladies dealt with the makena shots? My doc said they are going to start giving them to me around 16weeks.. any advice would be greatly appreciated

Re: Progesterone shots..

  • Not yet, but I start at 20 weeks  ((my appointment with the high risk doctor).  I know there are quite a few of us who will be joining you.

  • I haven't dealt with those in particular but I gave myself progesterone shots the first 12 weeks last pregnancy and during my FET earlier this summer.  I'm not sure what the difference is but apparently when I get to 16 weeks I will take them this time also but for some reason these can't be self administered.   Thats all I know about those.

  • Thank you so much for your reply.. I can't give them to
musel either.. I'm going to ask the doctor about that... thanks again
  • If you search for it I asked for info on this a few weeks ago- a lot of ladies gave me a lot of good information and I felt way better after having some of my questions answered. My ob is starting me at 16 weeks too because my daughter was early
  • Hey, can you give the title of the post please? I would love to look at it.
  • How far along are you?? Can you keep us updated on how they make you feel?? I'm kinda scared lol
  • I'm pretty sure it was the same :) maybe with a question mark at the end
  • Are you not able to administer them to yourself or do you not feel comfortable doing it? If it's the later I've got some great tips to help as I've being giving myself shots for years and it's def hard at first.

  • @schnitz9 I was told that they don't allow it,  which is silly because I was able to self administer the progesterone in early pregnancy last time as well as during all of my FETs

That's so strange. I wonder why.  Wonder if they want to monitor vitals before administering the shots.  Is progesterone considered a steroidal shot?  They may want to check BP first.  Either way kinda sux cause doing at home would be so much more convenient and easier. @chickyclg do they give them in the thigh or stomach? Aren't they pretty thick serum and needles? Would think best advice would then be to just be prepared for some soreness right?

I've only done them during first tri in the hip, but yes it was very thick and could be painful.  During my last FET I was given Synera patches to numb the location first and that helped with the actual pain during injection, but you still have a bruised and itching sensation in the location.  Last pregnancy I did the daily suppositories from 16 weeks on instead weekly progesterone.  There has to be some sort of a difference between them, I don't get how the Mekena is that different

Personally, from my experience, they hurt less in areas that are more fatty.

This definitely. Since these shots are known to be a bit thicker serum they need a thicker longer needle. You def want to get them in the behind as it would hurt less and there's more fatty tissue for them to push the serum into. Yes it may seem awkward but you def want the butt as it would hurt far less.

  • @chickyclg That makes sense.. I going to do a little more research.. I appreciate you guys help!!
  • Anyone started their injections yet?  Mine have been ordered but I am wondering if it is worth seeing if my OB will be willing to prescribe Synera patches if they are really painful.
