Acid reflux remedies/med

Acid reflux is in full force  :#  So does anyone have any remedies or a certain otc med they can't live without? I will call my doctors office tomorrow to make sure whatever I do is safe but I would love some tips from you ladies that have experienced with this loveliness! My esophagus thanks you in advance  :p

Re: Acid reflux remedies/med

  • Eating something like bananas and apples may help.   i have heard that natural almonds work also.  hope you get some relief.
I am unsure of what medicines are safe to take.  zofran will help if the doctor had prescribed some for nausea earlier in pregnancy.  they say its safe now and i know alot of people who are prescribed  it during pregnancy.  just keep an eye on how often you need it.

  • I take a Tums when it's bad - wait and see if it helps and only then take the second. some say to to avoid the extra calcium, one or two every couple of days for the last half of a pregnancy is not anything risky. BUT If you have to take several a day to help it subside then definitely ask your OB for a prescription med instead.

i find its the worst at night before bed, and propping my and neck up a tad higher on extra pillows usually is relief enough. A little Apple cider vinegar is also supposed to be a good remedy.
  • Zantac!  My doctor lets me take Zantac and I can't live without it.  My acid reflux is horrible and Tums hardly make a dent (especially when I wake up in the middle of the night).  My doctors office OKs most OTC remedies...I personally am taking Zantac and it makes a HUGE difference.  And Tums occasionally provide a little instant relief.  And sleeping as propped up as I can, and trying not to eat too close to when I lay down or recline.  And I'm still suffering.  If I just rely on Tums or home remedies, I'm up most of the night and vomiting/waking up choking.  Talk to your doctors office ASAP and good luck!
  • @cbhemi1218 thank you so much I was researching last night and heard about apples thinking of trying that too!

@kjd291 that's exactly when I'm having my problem too. I was basically sleeping upright last night. Thank you for your suggestions!!!

@anonellis I will be talking with my doc about zantac today for sure! I had this really bad with DD and tums didn't scratch the surface. I haven't tried them this pregnancy yet but if it's anything like last time I'll be pulling out the big guns. thank you somuch for your reply!
  • I got a prescription from my doc
  • I took Tums a lot last pregnancy until I was told to stop because I was taking the max amount allowed and any more than that can cause kidney stones. I then started taking Zantac. Some people will tell you baking soda, but this can be very dangerous for pregnant women. I have a friend who swears by a spoonful of mustard.

  • So, at the risk of being "that mom", I've recently started using Doterra essential oils and they gave a blend called DigestZen (Zengest in Canada) when diluted with fractionated coconut oil and then rubbed on chest over the "burning area" I find relief in minutes. I do not sell the oils, nor am I trying to advertise for them. Honestly it's been such amazing relief and after seemingly endless heartburn horror with my pregnancy with my daughter (April 2015) I am so thankful to have relief!
if you wanted to try, I'd google how to find a rep in your area. :)
  • I've just been using Tums, but I haven't had it frequently enough at this point to be concerning about the amount of Tums.

I second the opinion to check with your Dr. They can tell you what would be safe to take as a daily med.

  • Zantac! I bought the no name version cuz I'm a cheap mama but thank goodness for jt!
  • I had a friend who had horrible reflux/heartburn and she told me our doctor said to take Zantac. I have been taking it (walgreen 75 version) once per day the past week and it has truly saved my days. I was a fire breathing dragon starting around 1pm until I went to bed. Zantac is safe for pregnancy.
  • Just talked to the doc they said I could choose between pepcid ac, maalox, mylanta, and zantac. from all the comments I'll try zantac first. thank you all so so so much!
  • My obgyn says you can take tums but what helps me most is chamomile tea.  I use 2 bags per cup.  The chamomile oil balances out the acidity in your stomach

  • I'm also on the zantac train! Every day. ugh.
The acid is up in my throat all the time. I woke up and threw up from it the other night.
I still take Tums in a pinch or to double up but they don't do much. Also, sometimes a glass of milk helps.

I have always heard this too but for some reason bananas actually give me terrible heartburn! I have no idea why!
